Spellbinding

Spellbind, the Nuremberg based indie rockers behind the latest Movement videos on PLAYSTATION Store, talk about their music.

Spellbind weave together a range of different ingredients from the spectrum of independent, alternative rock, creating an honest yet rich sound whether they're invoking hard rock, casting a more melancholic acoustic charm or channelling an up-tempo dance track. Each song demonstrates the many facets of the band, yet carries its own personal feeling.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard it before?

Our compositions are a mixture of many different influences and various music styles. It's difficult to find a matching explanation for Spellbind's music. We just call it Indie Pop Rock!

So, how did you get together?

Chris, our singer, and Ole, the guitarist, have known each other since school. Jonas, our bass player, and Dominic, the drummer, have also known each other for ages.

In 2000, Ole and Dominic met at university in Nuremberg when starting the same course of studies. So, this was the kick-off for the band.

Who are your musical influences?

We listen to Radiohead, Kashmir, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Placebo, Soulwax, Athlete, Cardigans, Blur, BlocParty, Travis, Blackmail, Pink Floyd, Beatles...

What subjects do you tackle in your lyrics?

LOVE and HATE.

Your music is available through Movement (available on PLAYSTATION Store). How are the Internet and downloads changing the face of the music industry?

The face of the music industry has been changed completely. The industry can't rest on its laurels anymore as the Internet offers a platform for everybody to present themselves to the world. The problem of this global marketplace is the excess supply of videos, music and all other kind of ideas... It becomes more difficult to screen for good quality today.

What do you think of the general perception of music from your country?

There are definitely some big acts from Germany that stand the test in countries all over the world, but we think that it's quite difficult for German-speaking bands to gain ground abroad.

Are you touring this year or will you be doing any festivals?

We are touring through Bavaria in autumn and we intend to play some gigs in Paris and maybe in England again. We've been to Manchester last November and played a couple of gigs there. We had a fantastic time there and hope to come back to England again.
