DUNGEON SIEGE III developer interview

Ready for a new adventure? Prepare yourself for a dark and deadly journey on PS3 with DUNGEON SIEGE III's associate producer Nathan Davis.

Can you describe DUNGEON SIEGE III for those who aren't familiar with the game or the series?

DUNGEON SIEGE III is a fantasy action role-playing game [RPG] that puts the player in the role of a descendent of the once great, but now destroyed, 10th Legion. It is up to him to bring the Legion back to restore peace and order in the land. Along the way he's joined by unique companions with a wide variety of magic and martial abilities.

How have you used the feedback from previous DUNGEON SIEGE titles in the decisions you made when developing DSIII?

As we were developing this instalment, we looked at the first two games in addition to many other action RPG titles, Massively Multiplayer Online RPGs and even non-RPG action titles. Using all of these games as inspiration, we distilled down what would be the best skill and ability system, loot system and action mechanics for our game. A lot of that process involved making sure we understood what players liked most about the original games.

What sort of response have you encountered from the game's unveiling so far?

The team sees the game all the time and have gotten used to the look and feel of our engine, the characters, the animation and the environments. So each time we bring it outside of the developer circle and show new stuff to Square Enix, Chris Taylor at Gas Powered Games or to the press, we are often taken off guard by how positive the response has been. Not that we don't think we are making a good game that also looks visually great, it's just easy to forget what you have until you get an outsider's perspective.

What sort of enemies and characters will players face in the game?

You will find some of your standard fantasy enemies like skeletons and giant spiders to hack to pieces. But we've also developed a number of very unique enemies and computer-controlled characters thanks in large part to the creative vision of our art director, Justin Cherry. Many have a dark and exotic flavour that will stand out.

Will the game have multiple endings based on the decisions made by the players? How far-reaching will their decisions be in the game?

Like other Obsidian games, choice and consequence play an important role. So there will be multiple endings and decisions you make in the first region which will impact things that happen in the last region.

What sort of challenges did you come across creating the game?

Initially, getting the visceral feel of console based melee combat was a challenge and therefore a focus for us. We iterated a lot during pre production and now have a fun and rewarding action experience.

What's been your favourite moment developing DSIII?

I really enjoyed seeing rag doll physics get implemented in the Onyx engine. We've had endless fun launching dead enemies as we tweak the weighting of creatures in the game.

Is there anything else you want to add about DUNGEON SIEGE III?

I'm very excited about the story of DSIII. It's crafted by the skilled hand of our creative lead, George Ziets, who was behind Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. I think when players can finally sink their teeth into this game they will see a story a cut above other action RPGs.

The People vs: LittleBigPlanet 2

Members of the Media Molecule development team answer questions from the always inquisitive PlayStation community about the sequel to the hit PlayStation 3 game.

What kind of story and theme can we expect from LittleBigPlanet 2? (Perelie, UK)

In LittleBigPlanet, the different cultures of the world provided the diverse art styles for the game themes. This time you'll be travelling through history, to different worlds themed around a period of great human creativity, but with a LittleBigPlanet twist.

Amongst the new themes are: Victoria's Lab, a Victorian inspired steam punk playground, flourished with cakey decadence; Eve's Asylum, a lush garden world we describe as Designer Organic, which is very much inspired by the likes of Rennie Mackintosh and Frank Lloyd Wright; and the Handmade Arcade of The Cosmos, a theme based around the creativity of videogame art.

Can people from the first LittleBigPlanet game join your pod or even play levels with you in LittleBigPlanet 2? And will the Popit size increase in LittleBigPlanet 2? (ISlayer3000, NZ)

You can't join each other to play online from the different games, but things you create in the first game can be played in the second game. In terms of Popit, you can now run it in full screen, and it also comes with some new rather nifty sorting and filtering options.

Will it be possible to make videos and to export them to the XMB? (Dragongaze13, France)

Nope, sorry.

Will we be able to shoot short movies with the new camera functions? (katil199X, Germany)

Oh yes! The new cameras, when combined with the Sequencer tool and other great tools like Sackbots allow you to create in-depth cinematic cutscenes for your games. If you combine these tools with the ability to level link, you can make a movie that lasts as long as you want it to!

Now that we know LittleBigPlanet 2 can be played with PlayStation Move, will there be PlayStation Move only trophies? If so, will there be PlayStation Move multiplayer trophies too? Will I have to buy PlayStation Move to be able to gain all the trophies or will they be achievable with both PlayStation Move and/or the Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller? (Tomyi, Germany)

The LittleBigPlanet 2 Blu-ray Disc will feature a bonus section of levels specifically created for PlayStation Move. The gameplay is an evolution of what was shown at the Tokyo Game Show in 2009, and the Game Developers Conference this year - fun co-op gameplay with one player playing as Sackboy, and another player using PlayStation Move to help him through the level.

As this is a separate bonus mode, there are no trophies tied in with it - so you won't need a PlayStation Move motion controller to gain all the trophies in LittleBigPlanet 2. And this is just an initial taster of what could be possible when Sackboy meets PlayStation Move. There will be plenty more exciting stuff to look out for in the future!

Will we be able to add custom music to LittleBigPlanet 2? (Deserteaglezx, AU)

Yessiree! You'll be able to use the Music Sequencer to easily remix songs or create your own from scratch. It's a very powerful - but really easy to use - new tool that works straight from Popit. If you can use Popit, you can make music.

The level editor in LittleBigPlanet was actually a bit hard to use, will the editor in LittleBigPlanet 2 be more user-friendly? (flaviusdigital, Poland)

Create mode is essentially still the same, but we've made a lot of alterations to the toolset to make it easier to use, and added loads of more tools that make it easier and faster to create things.

In lots of cases, the new tools allow you to build something in four minutes that used to take four hours, so the things that were harder to create are now within the reach of people with less time, or who maybe aren't quite as familiar with the existing tools as those super creators out there are. It also means those super creators can go even further than they've been able to.

It would be interesting to find out how you came up with the idea for Sackboy? The main characters of the game are rag dolls; does it have a hidden meaning? Seeing the game for the first time, I was pretty sure that this title was not created only for children, although, judging by the style of the title, you surely wanted to please this particular audience. Please tell us more about the origins of the lovely Sackboy! (WhiteMoj, Russia)

In the beginning, Sackboy was a little guy with a pink square with a yellow head, the costume you get for Ace-ing the final level. He was placeholder programmer art, and was soon replaced by the cute little guy we all know and love. He was designed by Kareem, Mark, Dave and Francis all jamming together until he was just right.

LittleBigPlanet is definitely for kids, but it's also definitely for adults too - we think some people see the game as being only for kids, because of the playful nature of the game, and the association with imagination and creativity - as we get older we stop imagining and playing so much. LittleBigPlanet allows you to go back to thinking like a kid, like when a washing up bottle was a perfectly good spaceship.

Will items bought in LittleBigPlanet work on LittleBigPlanet 2? (Luis_FFgamer, Portugal)

All downloaded DLC packs, all saved costumes, all created levels - everything on your profile essentially - will work with LittleBigPlanet 2.

Are you able to slap Sackbots? (If so, it would make great practice for when friends come over to my pod.) (NivekKom, AU)

Yes. But don't be too mean, or we'll call the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Sackbots - the RSPCS.

Introducing The 3rd Birthday

Game producer Yoshinori Kitase talks to eu.playstation.com about the upcoming action RPG title on PSP as well as answering questions submitted by the PlayStation community.

Released on the original PlayStation, Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve II introduced the world to Aya Brea, a troubled young policewoman turned private detective who takes on a series of chilling foes in a variety of locations across the United States.

In early 2011, gamers will be able to take control of Aya Brea once again in The 3rd Birthday, a title developed exclusively for the PSP system by Square Enix. “We took the main character of Aya Brea together with the timeline and created a completely new story,” explains game producer Yoshinori Kitase, a veteran of the FINAL FANTASY series, during a presentation of the title at gamescom.

“The story is set in New York which has been overrun by lots of funny looking monsters and creatures called Twisted. The people know very little about them and think they have travelled from another dimension and so a special organisation has been set up to fight against them. It’s called Counter Twisted Investigation and that’s who Aya Brea works for.”

Although the title features a number of role-playing game elements, it plays very much as an action title as Aya explores New York on her quest to eradicate the Twisted and other enemies. “It has all the features you’d expect in a shooting game,” says Kitase-san, “such as taking cover behind walls and other objects, and you can switch between different weapons such as shotguns, handguns and machine guns, even grenades. There are lots of RPG elements too; for example, Aya collects experience points and learn new abilities as the game unfolds.”

Perhaps the biggest innovation is the introduction of the OverDive system, which replaces Parasite Energy as Aya's principal weapon against the advancing waves of enemies. “Aya Brea has got special DNA which means she can do what normal human beings can’t,” explains Kitate-san. “In this particular game, she has the ability to hijack another person’s body and play as him or her.

“There are several benefits attached to this system: firstly, when you are about to die, if you find a computer-controlled character with very high health, you can dive into him and take over that high health, thus avoiding a very dangerous situation; secondly, when you see another character with a very powerful weapon, you can OverDive into him to take over the weapon he’s carrying as well; and finally there is a strategic advantage, as when you are taking on a monster who is very well guarded from the front, you can OverDive into a character who is behind the monster and attack him from there.”

What’s more, Kitase-san reveals an additional and intriguing twist to the OverDive system which comes in particularly handy when the action really heats up on the streets of New York: “As well as OverDiving into computer-controlled characters, you can OverDive into a monster when certain conditions are met. This means you can get inside the monster and inflict enormous damage, and this is called an OverDive Kill.”

Following the presentation, Kitase-san answered questions submitted by the official PlayStation community via community.eu.playstation.com.

Is The 3rd Birthday the sequel to Parasite Eve? (fortieTHief, Italy)
It is true that Aya Brea is the main character and you will also see some other characters from Parasite Eve 1 and 2. However, we’d rather you didn’t look at The 3rd Birthday as a sequel to the previous titles.

Will Aya have more combat options this time, not just limited to gun and magic; for example, can she do close combat or have melee weapons? (Rendor, United Kingdom)
There won’t be melee attacks as such, like kicking or fighting, although there will be different types of attack, both melee and distance attacks. For example, for the distance ones, if you manage to enhance your guns you can shoot from even further away. For melee, you can OverDive into a monster and take control of him.

How did the developers come up with the idea for the new OverDive system? (chungkingAngeL/kall-heinz, Germany)
I am not quite sure where the idea originally came from but there are so many first person shooters and we felt we had to come up with an idea to differentiate the game from those titles.

Demo Guide: EA SPORTS FIFA 11

Train your skills before the big kick-off in the downloadable demo of FIFA 11 from PlayStation Store.

The pitch is fresh and the fans are ready - it's a brand new season for FIFA and you can polish your skills with the PlayStation 3 FIFA 11 demo on PlayStation Store. Tackle some of these tips and make sure your fancy footwork is silky smooth before the game's full release in October 2010.

Study the team sheet
Getting to know your squad is even more important than ever before, thanks to Personality+. This new feature recreates the individual distinctness of each footballer's personality, taking their quirks and playing style from real life and putting it on the FIFA 11 pitch, which means if a player likes to deliver crisp passes or battles for possession all over the pitch in reality, you can expect the same here.

Know who you're playing against and be aware of their personality to use it to your advantage. If they like to shoot from distance, close down their space early, for example. Similarly, if you have someone in your team who loves to run into space for the perfect pass, make sure you give them the opportunity to shine by keeping your eye on their movement when you're on the ball.

Passing advice
If you're thinking about repeatedly tapping the pass button hoping that it will bamboozle your rivals, you may want to think again. The new Pro Passing system means you can't get away with merely relying on your team's natural ability. Now you have to take into account not only your own accuracy and the skill of the player you're controlling, but also how the current situation will affect the pass itself.

A talented passer may cope better under the pressure of three defenders bearing down on him, while others will find it more difficult to accurately place the ball if there's little time. Make sure that each pass you make takes into account who is making it and how fast the on-pitch action is. Become aware of your team's key passers. If you're not confident of a player's ability, quickly get the ball to someone more able rather than trying anything spectacular.

An ill-judged forward ball may lose you possession, so it's better to perform a safe pass backwards to a teammate than trying to force something going forward which could land you in trouble.

Express yourself - it's one-on-one
In FIFA 11 you can really battle for the ball with 360 Fight for Possession. Physical play is now more intense and realistic than ever, so you can jostle, barge and battle for space, both on and off the ball. It's a tactic you should take advantage of by not being afraid to run into rival players before going for the ball, or even using one teammate as a decoy to ensure your key man can get to the ball first.

However, be aware of your player's Strength rating - Barcelona and Argentine forward Lionel Messi may be one of the world's most skilful players but his small stature means he'll likely lose a physical confrontation with larger or more powerful rivals. If a physical game doesn't suit your players, then use guile and speed to compensate.

Take the game into your hands
If you've ever wanted to feel the thrill and pressure of being between the sticks, then FIFA 11 gives you the chance to be a goalkeeper in a fully player controlled 11 versus 11 match. This demo gives you a great taste of what it's like to play in goal during the Arena warm-up. Simply press the SELECT button on the Wireless Controller and choose to play on the Defending side. Then you'll be able to practise as Chelsea's number one, Petr Cech, and pull off some stunning saves that will make your friends realise they're in safe hands when it comes to the big game.

Download the FIFA 11 demo from PlayStation Store now and show the world just how good you are across the entire pitch.

Demo Guide: Mafia II

Get a little taste of mob life with this guide to surviving the mean streets of Empire Bay in Mafia II.

With Mafia II arriving in stores in August 2010, the wait is almost over for the hugely anticipated sequel to the PlayStation 2 classic. Now you can experience a little bit of life with the mafia in this must-play demo. Download it from PlayStation Store today or the boss won't be happy!

Home sweet home

At the outset of the demo you take control of Vito Scaletta, the main character from Mafia II, in his home. Before you embark on the mission, why not explore the apartment, there are loads of things to discover including listening to the various radio stations featured in the game via the radio in Vito's kitchen. There's also food and drink in the fridge to get through, plus the first of 50 hidden famous magazines to get your hands on - it's on the kitchen counter!

Time is of the essence

Don't want to get stuck into the mission straight away? Then feel free to do a little exploration by taking a walk or driving your car around. Remember, avoid the water and bear in mind that the demo offers only ten minutes of exploration, and only a small section of the main map to check out before you have to go and meet your buddies Joe and Henry at Misery Lane.

Diner's delight

The small area of map on offer in the Mafia II demo gives you a taster of what's to come in the full game including a selection of places to visit. These include diners, clothes stores, gun shops and body shops. While you don't have a vast amount of money to spend in the demo, you can enter a diner, grab a bite, play a few songs on the jukebox or just kick back and soak up the sights through the window.

Drive wild

Once you're done exploring (or if you just want to dive straight into the action) jump into one of the cars parked outside your home. Some are locked, so you'll have to smash a window to get in by pressing the Circle button. Once inside, press the R2 button to accelerate and the L2 button to brake. If you want to take corners at speed, simply hold the Circle button for a handbrake turn.

Start shootin'

Once you've arrived at your objective, the action kicks in as your target arrives - a fat man the mob boss wants dealt a rough hand. Grab the MG-42 machine gun by the window and shoot the goons trying to protect him. Once they're down, drop the MG-42 and equip your pistol by pressing the left directional button, then head down the stairs and out into the street.

If you need to duck behind cover during the gunfight, tap the X button. To lean out and shoot, hold down the L2 button and press the R2 button to fire. You can also reload your weapon by pressing the R1 button. Now it's time to fight your way through the distillery across the street to get to the fat man! Don't forget to grab the superior firepower along the way, including shotguns and tommy guns.

Dodge the cops!

Once you've killed your target, the building around you catches fire, so you need to escape with your injured friend in tow. Shoot anyone that gets in your way, dodge the burning debris and head out to your getaway car. With the cops on to you, you're going to need to drive fast to shake them, so, keep up your speed, corner fast and follow the directions on your map. You're home free - the boss will be happy!

Or are you?

Download the Mafia II demo from PlayStation Store today.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions developer interview

Developer Bennox talks to eu.playstation.com about bringing four different versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man to PlayStation 3.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions features Ultimate Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man Noir. That's a lot of Spider-Men! Did you ponder any other potential universes before settling on these?

We did - a lot! There were a few other universes that we thought about using but we went with those four for different reasons including gameplay, art direction and for brand recognition.

Did you have to allocate separate teams to work on each universe?

So, for gameplay we had basically five different teams, one for each universe and one core team that handled the overall combat system. As for the art direction, we had artists working on all four universes; one team for each. However, only one art director would make sure that every level respected the art direction that was set for that particular universe.

Did you have any Marvel writers help with the storyline for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions?

Dan Slott, the writer on Amazing Spider-Man at the moment was brought on right at the beginning because even though we had the basic idea, we weren't sure how we could connect all four together. He came in with the idea of using a really powerful artefact that exists in the Marvel universe to connect each of the storylines together.

Have you had more creative freedom developing a wholly original Spider-Man game rather than one that is based on an upcoming movie?

We have. If we were building a game that was based on a movie, we wouldn't be able to showcase four different worlds, so that's the kind of freedom we've had in working with the comic books. When we approached Marvel with that idea they were really pleased with the fact that we'd be showcasing four different Spider-Men. There are also 13 Marvel villains in the game which is a lot compared to others.

Is Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions an open world game like previous Spider-Man games, or will it be more of a linear experience for players?

It's linear but you get really huge levels. You don't feel constrained; you don't feel like you're in a really tight place. It's still pretty much straightforward in objectives, but if you want to explore the world you can. There are a lot of secondary objectives that will require you to do some exploration of locations.

Spider-Man has a vast array of moves and abilities, how have you developed the control system to keep it from being overly complicated?

It's the same control system in all four worlds so once you have learned the controls in one world; it's going to stay the same. It's also really action orientated so we went with something that's quite common in combat games. So you'll get fast attacks, strong attacks, grabs, jumps and web swinging. Throughout the game you'll also see yellow markers, which means you can web zip to them quickly by just tapping a button.

Will you be able to unlock new abilities for Spider-Man as the game progresses?

There is a lot of unlockable content. You'll be able to unlock new moves such as counter attacks. The best way to get these new moves is by defeating enemies in battle, which earns you a currency that can be used to purchase new moves, enhance health or buy alternate suits to wear throughout the game.

Does the game feature any multiplayer modes?

Right now there are no multiplayer modes in Shattered Dimensions but you do have a total of 180 challenges to complete. You'll get through half of them during a normal playthrough but if you want to complete all of them, you'll have to replay parts of the game in order to unlock the complete package.

Swing by eu.playstation.com for more Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions news soon, and check out the PlayStation blog at eu.blog.playstation.com for a gamescom report on the wall crawler's latest adventure!

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood first impressions

Become a legendary assassin in a world of injustice. It’s time to join your deadly kin in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.

The path of the assassin is often a lonely one. Roaming far and wide in the hunt for your prey, making sure you're not caught by local authorities and maintaining the trust of oblivious townsfolk are all essential skills. As Master Assassin Ezio, all these things come naturally - although it doesn't hurt to maybe have the help of a few friends...

Creed and culture

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is set shortly after the events of Assassin's Creed II. Ezio seeks revenge against a terrifyingly powerful Templar Order which has personally wronged him. The beautiful and unpredictable city of Rome is now the place where blood will be spilt in the name of vengeance.

As with the previous Assassin's Creed titles, Brotherhood has you roaming a city which is alive with citizens going about their daily business while you are tasked with missions which help you towards your ultimate goal - the untimely death of Cesare Borgia. However, even with new gadgets at hand, such as Leonardo da Vinci's parachute, Ezio cannot bring this about by himself.

As the skilled assassin, you can organise your Brotherhood to rise and fight against the corrupt Templars. You do this by hiring new members, each with their own traits and customisable abilities and appearance. While many start off as novice assassins, you can build up their experience by assigning pan-European missions to them. Success earns skill points which make your recruits more effective - and utterly deadly if you call upon them during your own tasks for a spot of immediate assassin assistance.

"Brothers gonna work it out"

If it's respect among fellow players you're after, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood brings even more to the table by offering multiplayer modes for the first time in the series. Playing across a variety of detailed maps, you choose from a selection of character classes (each with their own signature weapons and techniques) and then show the world your assassination skills.

Very little has been revealed about the multiplayer modes so far, although the character classes of Doctor, Soldier, Merchant, Banker, Executioner, Courtesan, Hunter, Barber, Priest and Blacksmith have been shown, as has the Wanted mode. Wanted places you in a bustling city with up to seven other players, each given the objective of finding and killing your target without being seen by the people who are also hunting you.

It's a tense and exciting affair, especially when you've been spotted by your target which starts a chase across the city. Only guile and subtlety can result in success, as you have the ability to disguise yourself once you're out of the hunter's line of sight. Then your mission can start anew...

If you want to try out the multiplayer of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood make sure you don't miss the multiplayer beta on PlayStation Network, exclusive to PlayStation 3, in September 2010 - and keep reading eu.playstation.com for more information.

F.3.A.R writer interview

Popular writer Steve Niles tells eu.playstation.com what it’s like to be behind the dark veil of PlayStation 3 horror shooter F.3.A.R.

How did you get the role of writer on F.3.A.R and were you a big fan of the series before you got the job?

I was! I played the first two games and absolutely loved them. My agent just offered the job to me one day... I had been offered a few other things before and those weren't quite what I was after compared to this. And specifically because of the way F.E.A.R. 2 ended I wanted to follow that storyline.

I was also working on a movie with film director and writer John Carpenter that just fell apart - we both ended up quitting - but we got along really well. I knew he was a big gamer so I asked Warner Bros. if I could invite a friend to help me with the game and then they found out it was John Carpenter [laughs]. So they really got into the idea and we started working on it.

What was it like working on a videogame script?

The developers at Day 1 Studios had in mind some things they wanted to do: strip back the military and conspiracy parts and increase the horror. And they also gave me the characters that they wanted to use in the game. My number one question was: is Alma [one of the main antagonists in the series] pregnant? That's all I wanted to know, as the possibilities there were amazing.

So they gave me these basic guidelines and then - and oddly enough I've only experienced this in videogames - they gave me environments, which were already built. So they asked me to make something happen in these particular environments. I started digging into the story and following all the threads from the previous game. I wanted to make it into a solid trilogy; tie everything up and hopefully then create the groundwork for the future of F.E.A.R.

Which of the game's storylines were your favourites to work on?

I loved working on Alma's pregnancy, because now she's half supernatural being, half human, and her world is starting to affect our world. Her contractions are literally shaking our world, and that's just so cool. I really enjoyed that, and also that Paxton Fettel is such a great anti-hero now he's trying to help his brother, so I had a lot of fun with that. And it's fun coming up with ways to scare people!

Are videogames becoming more effective at scaring people than other mediums?

Absolutely! Although I think videogames are in the silent movie period right now - we're making the equivalent of Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari [laughs]. Soon we're going to move up to Frankenstein and Dracula when we start figuring out how to use all these tools.

Being a gamer and horror fan I think one of the biggest trappings and problems of horror based games is that you memorise the scares. But not anymore. Now we've figured out ways to randomise the enemies. You turn a corner and that nasty creature isn't where you found him last time... he's behind you, or bursting through a door. So the game experience changes and just being aware of that, the tension rises. And that's what horror is all about, building expectation and fear and then catching you off guard. Videogames are in their infancy and as we learn how players respond, we'll learn how to scare them more effectively.

What do you feel are the key ingredients to making videogame players fearful?

It's all about building tension. That's why I love these environments in the game, wandering around in some of these rooms gets you worried, on top of the randomised enemies appearing everywhere, and then you've got all sorts of new monsters. What's really nice about the game is, opposed to the military conspiracy which has been going on before, it's now just a mass panic because the culmination of all the experiments they've performed in the last two games has blown up in their face.

Is there anything you want to add about your whole experience as a writer on F.3.A.R.?

I've had a great time working with everybody on it. Beforehand, I wasn't sure how much fun working on a videogame would be, and even working on screenplays can be awful sometimes because you have to work by committee. And this has been an experience where working by committee has really worked out well. And working with John Carpenter was great.

I want to see how people react to the ending. I really didn't think I was going to be allowed to do what I've done, but they let me! So I'm really curious to see what people think of the game's ending. And I just hope players enjoy the whole game.

Toy Story 3: The Videogame developer interviewWes Craven Praises Young Additions To ‘Scream 4′ Cast

Mafia II developer interview

2K Czech’s Denby Grace talks to eu.playstation.com about mob life, gangster movies and bringing Empire Bay to life on PlayStation 3.

Mafia II takes place over two eras, the 40s and 50s. Why did you decide to move it forward from the 30s - which was the original setting in the first game - and split it over two decades?

The first Mafia really ended at a stopping point where everyone either died or went to jail. Even the player character was killed so, from a story point of view, there really is no going back. Also, we felt that having done the 1930s, we wanted to try something different and move things forward to another really iconic period in American history.

The story in Mafia II spans nearly 10 years of our characters' lives, and we tell the story in a manner that really hooks into that cinematic vibe. This was a major focus during the development of this game; our inspiration came from such movies as Goodfellas and The Godfather, along with many other great epic mob movies.

In Mafia, Prohibition anchored the storyline somewhat. Is there a similar hook in Mafia II or is this story solely about characters and how they develop over the course of this journey?

The focus this time is on our main characters' journey, their progression up the ladder of an organized crime family and the story of what happens when they get there. Events like World War II, along with the birth of rock 'n' roll and the invention of television sets in the 50s all paint an impressive backdrop for the game.

Can you tell us a little bit about the game's main character, Vito Scaletta, and how he fits into this new world you've created for Mafia II

Vito Scaletta is an Italian immigrant who came to the US from Sicily when he was a small boy. When our game starts out Vito has returned from fighting in World War II, he's been injured and returns to Empire Bay where he is greeted with the fact that his deadbeat father has died and left the family with a large debt. This is the driving motivation behind Vito being pushed towards the Mafia life, that and of course his best friend Joe who already has some connections with the mob.

With such a huge world to explore, can you talk us through some of the mission types that players take on over the course of the game?

Players are required to use a variety of different gameplay mechanics throughout the game and these are incorporated in different types of missions; there are stealth, driving, gun combat and melee based missions. The missions in Mafia II, much like in the first game, are very grand in scale and setting. They are not simple shoot-outs; they are very expansive set piece events.

You've mentioned previously that Mafia II is based on all the great gangster movies. Is that just period pieces or have you taken ideas and themes from today's modern gangster cinema too?

References have been taken from all over, not just gangster movies. Goodfellas was a big inspiration to us; the format, and the buddy story elements are what really attracted us. The Godfather is a classic movie series as well and I think you'll see some similar elements from that era and time period in the game. As for some modern references, we are big fans of The Sopranos and Mad Men: the first gives you great gangster references and the latter has really strong period references, even if it's a different period.

What kind of research did you have to do on the eras before you set out to build Empire Bay on PlayStation 3?

Well, we watched a lot of movies and read a lot of books! Additionally, we did a trip with our art team to New York and Chicago to soak up these great historic cities and really immerse ourselves in the architecture and layout.

Will there be decisions that you make along the way that may affect the outcome of the game and how the storyline moves forward?

With the Mafia II storyline we really embraced a linear experience. We wanted to deliver a strong and controlled experience in order to deliver a certain engrossing pace, character exposition, development and atmosphere, for every single player.

How many different types of vehicles and weapons are there for players to get to grips with in Mafia II?

A lot is the simple answer. The game features more than 50 vehicles and over 15 weapons. One cool feature that we have in the game is that you can personally customize your vehicles. They can be repainted, tuned, have performance upgrades and so on.

Can you tell us a little bit about the exclusive downloadable content for PS3 and how it fits into the Mafia II story arc?

PS3 owners will get The Betrayal of Jimmy exclusive download when they purchase the game. The content actually sits away from the main Mafia II storyline but it makes great usage of the expansive city of Empire Bay. The content is much more arcade based in its gameplay and game types. Players will play Jimmy who is a hitman for the mob where he carries out the Mafia's dirty work across the city, while completing various city quests. One of the coolest new features in this add-on is the fact that missions are scored and the scores are posted onto high score tables so you can compete against your buddies to see who the best is. It really adds a different dimension from the main Mafia II experience.

And finally: which is your favourite movie gangster movie of all time and why?

Goodfellas is such a great film. Harry Hill's journey up to great heights within the Mafia then all the way down to rock bottom again is just a great story. Also, I'd like to give honourable mentions to The Godfather: Part II and Donnie Brasco!

Demo Guide: Vanquish

Download the Vanquish demo today for a taste of full throttle space war action on PlayStation 3.

With Vanquish arriving in October 2010 on PS3, Sega has unleashed a demo on PlayStation Store for you to get to grips with. Check out this guide to mastering the Vanquish demo available for free on PlayStation Store now.

Suit up

The first thing you will need to do in the Vanquish demo is get familiar with the control system. Use the left stick to move Sam, the game's main character and the right stick to control the camera's movements. To aim your weapon, press the L1 button and to fire, press the R1 button. If you want to duck behind cover in the middle of a firefight, tap the Square button.

When taking cover you can pop out and fire at enemies or press the Triangle button to throw grenades. When you're up close and personal with an opponent, press the Circle button for a vicious melee attack - it's guaranteed to knock your enemy to the floor! Lastly, and most importantly, press the L2 button to use Sam's power sliding ability. It's perfect for speeding past waves of enemies and dodging enemy fire.

Weapon select

At the outset of the demo you have four weapons to choose from. You can cycle through each one by pressing the directional buttons. The weapons on offer throughout the demo include a shotgun, assault rifle, heavy machine gun and two types of grenade.

Ready? Time to fight!

Weapons on

The action moves fast in the Vanquish demo so you'll have to have your wits about you. Remember to use cover at all time by pressing the Square button. It's the best way to stay out of the enemy's line of fire. However, don't be afraid to use your power sliding ability to get up close and personal for a melee attack.

During the first assault, there's a platform to the right of the arena that has a sniper rifle located in an arms crate - grab it, it's perfect for picking off the gunners on the platform above the arena. Once they're down, take out the troopers operating the Mech warriors and then take control of one to take out the last remaining enemies.

Aerial Assault

Now that you have defeated the first wave of enemies, the next section of the demo opens up. Take control of one of the mounted guns and start blasting the enemy aerial transports that drop in below you. Once they're down, it's time for the big fight!

Robot rockin'

The final part of the Vanquish demo is a huge armoured robot called the KNRB-0 Argus. The best way to destroy the Argus robot in its first form (a spider-like Mech) is to shoot the exposed joints. Once you've done that, aim for the red core on the top of its head.

Once that's destroyed, the Argus will transform into a building sized beast that bombards you with rockets, lasers and machine gun fire. Weaken it by blasting its exposed joints once more, then when it's stunned, aim for the core on its chest - blast that enough and the battle is yours!

See you if you can take the heat and download the Vanquish demo for free from PlayStation Store today.

inFamous 2 developer interview

Art director Mathias Lorenz introduces the new instalment in the supercharged adventures of Cole MacGrath.

What was your goal when you set out to make inFamous 2?
To make a new and better game. We looked at everything and made sure we left no stone unturned in creating a bigger, better and louder sequel! In inFamous, we hint at The Beast, the civilisation-ending dark character, but we don't see it, we don't know what it is. Going into inFamous 2, right away you fight The Beast and you find yourself reeling from that experience. So Cole goes to this new city, New Marais, which is a southern United States city inspired by New Orleans and a couple of European cities such as Paris and Italian architecture. He goes there because that is the place where the Ray Sphere is built, this thing that he got his superpowers from. So Cole tries to find people who are familiar with it because he knows that he needs to amplify his powers, he needs to become a super, superhero because he knows The Beast is coming.

After the initial reveal, you decided to revert to the original design for Cole; can you explain the reasoning behind this?
We looked at everything coming from inFamous and one of the decisions was to change his outfit based on the fact that New Marais is a city in the south: it's hot, it's humid, there's no way he can keep his leather jacket on, not for 10 minutes. So one of the decisions was to remove the jacket and put him in a T-shirt; also since we're working on and improving his parkour abilities, I wanted to show off his body more rather than have his jacket hide his muscles. We changed the actor for Cole; in the first game he was represented by a voice actor and one of the big improvements for inFamous 2 is we're having 3D cutscenes, so there we do motion capture. So we needed an actor who could do both the voice acting and some of the motion capture, and we tried to imbue some of his likeness into Cole. However, when we revealed Cole at E3 2010, we were taken aback by the uproar of fan support for the original Cole. We were positively surprised and we didn't expect it, so of course we listened to our fans and went back and took the best of everything to end up with the design we have settled on now.

Cole was pretty powerful at the end of the first game; will he be as powerful at the outset of inFamous 2?
He starts off with pretty much the same powers as he had at the end of the first game. We're not taking the powers away, we're not starting from scratch.

How will his powers progress? Presumably by the end of the game he will be pretty much invincible?
He is going to be a super, superhero but, again, he is not invincible; what you always want to do with superheroes is to give them some challenges, some vulnerabilities.

From what we've seen so far, you’ve really raised the bar graphically, so will we see much larger environments that can be interacted with?
When you make the character more powerful, then of course you want the environment to react accordingly. That's the way you show he's stronger. What we’ve done this time is to make the environment way more destructible, so that everything that you think should break, breaks; that's what being a superhero is all about, you want to feel it, because that's what makes it visceral and personal.

What can you tell us about the new powers at his disposal?
We've already talked about the Ionic Vortex, which is like an electric thunderstorm; it becomes very apparent when you unleash that how it affects the environment instantly. You've got to be careful with that because you can hurt a lot of people. Now we're revealing the Kinetic Pulse, which uses the property of electricity to magnetise metals and which means Cole will be able to pick up cars and use them as weapons. In terms of the ice power, we were playing with the idea of how we can make Cole more powerful although with this one we're not quite there yet in terms of deciding how it will be used. Cole is the electric man, he's not ice man.

What types of enemies will Cole battle in the game and who are the main characters he will come up against?
The main character is Bertrand, the leader of the militia, which is the group that keeps New Marais clean from any kind of non-humans. There's also the Corrupted, creatures from the swamp that surrounds New Marais; they attack New Marais and so the militia tries to fend them off and defeat them. There is also the elite enemy from the Corrupted group, which we call the Ravager. Cole finds himself in the middle of all that.

Will players still be able to make choices throughout the game that affect the story?
Yeah, absolutely. That's a big part of the series, choosing between good and evil; a key part of being a superhero is that he has to make impossible choices. This time around we will have multiple endings that are affected by your karmic choices. Depending on if you are good or evil, you will have a different outcome of the game.

Are you planning to have players' save files from inFamous affect the beginning of inFamous 2 depending on what choices they made?
We're working on that. The challenge is to make the game as interesting for people who did play inFamous as it will be for newcomers to the series. So we have to balance that in terms of how we make it happen.

Zeke is back; will he have an important part to play in Cole's story?
He's the sidekick so he's going to have his part to play. Cole loves Zeke; every superhero needs a sidekick to bounce off of and Zeke's going to play that part in inFamous 2. We love Zeke!
