Win tickets to the premiere of new movie 'The Damned United'!

In cinemas 27th March

The premiere is taking place in London's famous Leicester Square on the evening of March 18th and we're giving 1 lucky winner the chance to win two tickets!

Set in 1960's and 1970's England, THE DAMNED UNITED in cinemas 27th March tells the confrontational and darkly humorous story of Brian Clough's doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, Leeds had an aggressive and cynical style of football - an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. Taking the Leeds job without Taylor by his side, with a changing room full of Don's boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Clough's belligerence and brilliance over 44 days. This is that story. The story of The Damned United.

Directed by Tom Hooper, THE DAMNED UNITED stars Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney, Jim Broadbent and Stephen Graham and is adapted for the screen by Peter Morgan (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Frost/Nixon) from the best-selling and critically acclaimed novel by David Peace.

Plus, we've also got 20 copies of the hugely successful novel 'The Damned Utd' by David Peace for 20 runners up.

Romance and movies

The most romantic Blu-ray Disc movies for a great night in on Valentine’s Day.

Wondering what to do this Valentine’s Day? How about cuddling up on the sofa with one of these classic heart-warming Blu-ray Disc movies?

Jerry Maguire

Tom Cruise will turn your heart to mush in this Oscar nominated rom-com about a sports agent who, when stripped of his friends, family, job, and fiancé is forced to start all over again.

With a little help from his only remaining client, pro football star Cuba Gooding Jnr, Renee Zellweger’s single mother and her son, Cruise soon begins to understand the only real values that matter in the world. A real tearjerker.

50 First Dates

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore team up for this romantic comedy that sees Sandler - a marina veterinarian afraid to commit to a relationship – fall for Barrymore’s Lucy, who lost her short term memory in a car accident and believes every day is October 13th.

Cue Sandler’s touching and funny quest to help try and restore her memory, or at least be a part of her everyday routine and, hopefully someday, a part of her life. Be ready to laugh cry, and laugh some more!  A Valentine’s movie with a touching twist.

Dirty Dancing

The original 80’s girlie movie, Dirty Dancing inspired a generation, spawned a sequel and even a stage show musical. Patrick Swayze sets hearts fluttering as Johnny Castle, a dance instructor at Catskills summer camp in 1963 America who sweeps Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman off of her feet.

Naturally, trouble ensues and Baby must decide to obey her parents or follow her heart in this toe-tapping classic that has never looked better in High Definition. Remember, nobody puts Baby in the corner, especially not on Valentine’s Day.

Mr & Mrs Smith

A romantic comedy with bullets - lots of bullets - Mr & Mrs Smith is a hilarious action romp with a heart of gold that was not only a box office sensation, it’s responsible for pairing up Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, making for the perfect Valentine’s day cuddle up and watch.

Pitt and Jolie are the Smiths, two seemingly everyday folk who soon find out they’re both work for rival assassin agencies and receive orders from above to bump each other off. Cue bullet action, steamy smooching and an action packed journey designed to rekindle that loving feeling.

Pretty Woman

A modern day rags-to-riches story with the superb Julia Roberts in an Oscar nominated performance and the brilliant Richard Gere, Pretty Woman is a both a classic piece of cinema as well as being a timeless heart warmer.

Roberts plays Vivian Ward, a woman worlds apart from Gere’s straight laced Edward Lewis, who teaches him a lesson or two about love while he teaches her about the finer things in life. Brimming with passion, humour and two unforgettable performances, this is romantic comedy at its finest.

Enchanted

Another perfect Valentine’s movie, Enchanted is a classic Disney animated film brought to life in the real world when princess Giselle, played brilliantly by Amy Adams, is banished by Susan Sarandon’s evil queen from her magical, musical and very animated land.

Finding herself on the gritty streets of New York City in the modern day, she is rescued by Patrick Dempsey’s divorce lawyer and soon begins to fall deeply in love with him, despite already promising her heart to a fairytale prince. It’s all your favourite Disney movies brought lovingly to life in a classic love story!

Taking a look at Wanted: Weapons of Fate

From comic book to movie, and now to videogames - Wanted's high octane action is coming for you on PLAYSTATION 3. Dare you pick up the Weapons of Fate?

Wanted: Weapons of Fate aims to refresh you, albeit by manically throwing you head first into a world full of outrageous assassins, curving bullets, and head popping action designed to leave you breathless. And that's before you even get to play the game itself...

Welcome to the Fraternity

The initial concept of Wanted was born of a popular adult audience comic book by writer Mark Millar and artist J.G. Jones, which featured a downtrodden everyday man by the name of Wesley Gibson who finds out he's the son of an expert assassin in a world where supervillians have wiped out all the superheroes.

The hugely successful film took this concept, twisted its neck and pointed the concept's head in a slightly different direction, making Gibson more of an anti-hero prodigy and replacing the supervillian elements with a slightly less alienating, if still brutal fraternity of assassins who kill for a greater good.

As for the third person shooter game... well, if you're a fan of either book or film, consider Weapons of Fate to be an amiable blending of both worlds, with a common theme - to bring as much fun, impact and inspiration from the two as possible. "The comic book is filled with this incredible attitude," says Pete Wanat, Executive Producer. "We wanted to take those elements from the comic and bring them in as well, the sort of stuff the movie didn't really get to explore - although we're still in the movie version of Wanted. So if you're a fan of the film or comic, you'd find this nice middle ground."

"A knife never runs out of bullets"

With Weapons of Fate using the movie as a springboard, you control Gibson in a new chapter of the story universe, exploring his journey into becoming an unmatched assassin, while also delving into his past with levels that let you assume the role of his father as the circumstances around Gibson's barely mentioned mother are investigated.

In gameplay terms, this means going through varied environments taking out as many antagonists as possible with handguns, shotguns, grenades... just about any weapon that appeared in the rather extroverted movie, some of which can be dual wielded.

That's not the only thing Weapons of Fate has up its assassin's sleeve. Your bullet's trajectory can be curved to spectacular levels which can have you hitting your target behind scenery, around objects and even simultaneously taking out multiple opponents. As a signature move it's one of the things which separates the game from its peers, given the tactics brought into play - bullet curving isn't just about showing off or hitting your foe, as it can also be used to draw them out or stun them, allowing you to get in close with a melee attack.

The Little Things

Weapons of Fate is also big on making sure you have the athleticism of a world class Wanted style assassin. Acrobatics and stealth play a large part, as well as the ability to utilise cover, whether that's using a captured enemy or any number of moveable and destructible objects in your environment.

The cover system lets you roll, leap, dive around and on top of things while you also get a benefit by going from one cover spot to another, which results in increased speed and a motion blur effect. This can confuse enemies (who will often verbally communicate your position) and trick them into thinking you're in one place when you're really in another, which you can then take advantage of. "It's making cover as an offensive weapon rather than just a defensive mechanism," says Wanat.

"We should have put that in the movie!"

Wanat is also keen to note Weapons of Fate's set pieces, one of which shows Gibson on a plane, complete with exploding fire extinguishers which depressurise the craft and creates a constantly unstable environment as well as extra dangers for everyone, such as being sucked out of the plane. It's a sequence designed to imitate the thrills evident in the film's action packed train scene.

"When we saw that amazing train sequence we wanted to emulate that, but we didn't want to do a straight 'what you see in the movie is what you play in the game' experience," explains Wanat. "We wanted to take that same sensibility brought by that action sequence with the train and bring it to an airplane. When we showed the plane level to [the film's director] Timur Bekmambetov, he jumped up, started writing all these ideas down and was shouting 'We should have put that in the movie!' It's nice when you work with film makers that respond in kind."

Similarly, comic writer Millar also paid respects to the title's extravagance. "Mark really loved the story and the game, so we're really happy about that," said Wanat "When you spend so much time working on something and the guy who basically created all these characters and this universe gives you the thumbs up, it's really rewarding."

Wanted: Wanted

With its use of the film's soundtrack and effects, mixed in with knowing nods to the comic (such as Gibson's original costume, omitted from the movie) there's a lot for fans to look forward to. It's a rare thing for a movie tie-in to be released so far after the film it's based on, and Wanat is confident the wait will be worth it.

"Universal Pictures believed in the environment and the world that Timur created. There was no intention to [rush] it in time with the movie's cinematic release. The game needs to be a great game first. If we're not going to come out the same time as the film we really want to respect the game's core mechanics. What we want to build is a quality product."

Whether you're into the comic, the movie or just curious about the game, Wanted: Weapons of Fate has set its sights to impress all comers with its lively action and novel ideas. Expect it to fall under your crosshairs soon.

SingStar singles for singles

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with SingStar.

Everywhere you look on Valentine’s Day, romance is in the air. Restaurants are full of couples staring dreamily into each others eyes and petrol stations across Europe are swamped with flustered men buying last minute bouquets. Even the birds in the trees are winking at each other.

If you feel like escaping all of that, why not invite your single friends round for a SingStar party? Whether you want to belt out a rock ballad or huddle together for some cheesy pop from your favourite girl or boy band, here are a few suggestions to get things swinging.

Spice Girls Wannabe
Despite having the most uncoordinated outfits in music video history, The Spice Girls introduced a generation to “zig-a-zig ahhh” with this 1996 summer hit. It’s about putting your friends before any wannabe lovers, girl power and causing trouble in London’s Midland Grand Hotel for no reason whatsoever, judging from the video. If you’re having a night in with the girls, you should also check out Never Ever by All Saints, Venus by Bananarama and meteorology classic, It’s Raining Men by The Weather Girls.

Fergie Big Girls Don’t Cry
There are quite a few tears for lost lovers in the SingStore. Aerosmith are Cryin’, Alison Moyet is All Cried Out and She Cries Your Name, according to Beth Orton. However, Fergie’s track about moving on gets the recommendation because its chorus is just so infectious.

Shaggy Oh Carolina
If you’re pining after a special someone, a good way to make them feel special (or scare them away for good) is to release a song named after them. The Zutons invited Valerie over, The Kaiser Chiefs had their Ruby and My Chemical Romance mourned Helena, but Orville Richard Burrell, aka Shaggy, gets the nod for sheer originality; he compares the object of his affection to a squirrel in one verse and a grandfather clock in the next.

Foreigner I Want To Know What Love Is
Dear Mick Jones: “deep affection or fondness” according to the Oxford English Dictionary. The power ballad is a good choice for those who like to declare their love with a fist in the air from the back of a motorcycle on fire. There are some classics in the SingStore, such as Boston’s More Than A Feeling and Who Wants To Live Forever by Queen, and look out for the SingStar Rock Ballads collection on PlayStation 2.

Blu Cantrell Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)
Blu Cantrell’s debut single is the perfect revenge track for anyone who discovers their other half has been cheating on them. Presumably, the ‘Oops’ was Blu’s reaction when she realised that her song’s title makes little to no sense.

For those of you that are in the mood for love, check out the Love Songs SongPack. It includes:

The Bangles Eternal Flame
Westlife If I Let You Go
Will Young Leave Right Now
Frankie Goes To Hollywood The Power Of Love
Sara Bareilles Love Song

Build your ultimate team in FIFA 09

EA Sports announces Ultimate Team, an original new FIFA 09 game mode available via PlayStation Network.

Will you employ a sweeper and two attack minded wing backs or play it safe and bring in the entire Italy back four? This is just one of the many decisions you’ll need to make in the FIFA 09 Ultimate Team mode, available for download from March 19, 2009.

Collect, trade and play your way to international glory and assemble the greatest squad on the planet in the new mode that takes elements of traditional trading card games and adds the complexity of a football management simulation. Collect bronze, silver and gold virtual cards representing everything from the manager to the stadium to one of the 4,000 available football stars.

You can pit your dream squad against others via PlayStation Network and win in-game coins, which can be used to purchase new card packs. You can also trade unwanted cards, put them up for auction, track down elusive players in the transfer market and purchase new card packs from PlayStation Store.

A complex and accessible strategy system takes team chemistry into account, adding depth to the experience and rewarding tactical nous, and there will be plenty of matches and tournaments, both online and offline, for you to test your judgement in.

Download FIFA 09 Ultimate Team from March 19, 2009, and start building your dream squad.

Flower interview

A truly beautiful game, Flower is enchanting people with its splendour. President and Co-Founder of thatgamecompany, Kellee Santiago, explains how the original idea blossomed on PlayStation Network.

What was the original inspiration for Flower?

The idea for Flower grew organically from a number of inspirations. One was to try and capture the feeling of being in a large flower field; to capture both the sense of beauty when you see them all, but also the visceral feeling of being up close to an individual flower. If you do a Google image search for the term flower you discover photographs from people all over the world, all fascinated with this aspect of nature. Technically, it was an exciting challenge. What would happen if we took this aspect of videogames that is normally an afterthought on the edge of the world – the bushes and grass – and put it right in front, and make the entire game about it?

What I really like about Flower, though, is that it feels like a very personal expression of Jenova's [Chen, Creative Director]. The story and the themes that are expressed in the game really evolved from what I see as his current interpretation of the world around him, and the game invites the player to participate in that space. It has an intimate feel to it.

How did Flower come about on PlayStation Network?

Flower is the second PSN game in thatgamecompany’s three-game deal with Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica. We really love working with the company, as it really demonstrates a huge amount of faith in us. I mean, could you imagine us coming in, and pitching a game to you as I described in the answer to your first question? The guys there just get it, and we really enjoy collaborating with them on PSN.

What makes Flower such an ideal PSN title?

I think PSN players are looking for variety in their game collection, and Flower will definitely expand their menu. It's also a great compliment to the more core titles; like a delightful orange sorbet at the end of a meal.

What is it like working on PSN?

It’s fantastic. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has really committed to this idea of making PSN a place for unique downloadable content you just couldn’t find anywhere else. PixelJunk Eden, Linger In Shadows, and Riff: Everyday Shooter are just a few examples of how SCEI has really gone above and beyond in publishing some pretty awesomely unique titles. The company really supports the developer’s vision, not just in the game itself, but in what we say about it, and how it’s promoted. I would say that we are spoiled, but really, it’s just how it should be! And the company gets this.

How has the internal and external response to Flower helped shape the game?

Player feedback, even informal playtests with people in the office, is an integral part of our design process. We aim to make games that communicate ideas to our audience, so getting reactions early on is very important, even with our first prototypes and the feedback from that fed into the overall development of the game.

What challenges were there in developing Flower?

Developing Flower was not a straightforward experience. We initially began with an extremely vague and difficult subject. It took us more than a dozen prototypes to settle on the gameplay. We went through so many different versions of stories and characters, and we ended up not using any of them. Because we are innovating on the experience, the process is very much like walking in the mist. Our destination is very exciting. However, the path leading to it is not clear. Nobody's left any footprints for us to follow. There is quite a bit of trial and error. But once someone sees the light tower in the distance, we hack through bushes and jump over ditches to reach there. It's hard and painful, but the final view is worth the effort.

What have you learned from the development from flOw to Flower and how did this affect development?

Technically, we learned a lot about PLAYSTATION 3. The grass system renders 200,000 blades of grass simultaneously, and what's done with it in order to give it a very visceral feel is very much targeted to leverage the PS3. Production-wise, we learned from flOw what our limitations are, but also what we can accomplish as just a small team. I think players will see in Flower how much we have grown as a studio since flOw.

What inspired you to make a game so dependant on motion control?

One of our main goals at thatgamecompany is to create games that are accessible to a wide variety of people, both in content and in playability. For Flower, using the Wireless Controller's motion capabilities to fly around and having every button do the same thing so players could choose for themselves or switch it up was an easy choice for us. People who wouldn't normally get near a Wireless Controller suddenly relax when you tell them all you have to do is tilt it to move.

Where do you think the future of PSN will take us?

As players get more accustomed to downloading content, I think we’ll start seeing larger games on PSN that are equally as exciting and unique in content. As a gamer, I’m really excited for the upcoming years of PSN.

Fast new downloads for Burnout Paradise

If you think you've found everything Burnout Paradise has to offer, then prepare to re-discover what Paradise is truly about with this host of downloadable packs coming to PlayStation Network.

Electronic Arts' racing title Burnout Paradise is picking up the pace on PlayStation Network with a garage full of downloads for you to strap in to your PLAYSTATION 3.

Hitting the finish line first in February 2009 are the Party and Ultimate Bundle packs. The Party pack lets you compete in a multiplayer party game for up to eight players and showcase your skills across multiple challenges, featuring all your favourite Burnout cars and locations.

The Ultimate Bundle offers great value for those wanting to dip into the wonderful world of Burnout Paradise for the first time, with the inclusion of the full game, the Party pack and more including the Cagney pack which is loaded with new online based features and an update boasting motorcycles.

Following later in the same month will be the Time Savers pack and Legendary Cars pack. The Time Savers pack is ideal for players who want all the cars and bikes of Burnout Paradise without having to complete the game. This pack will immediately unlock all the vehicles that you can get for free ordinarily by playing Burnout Paradise all the way to completion - although you'll still need to win the events to earn your Burnout Licenses. Now there's no excuse for not getting online and mixing it with all the other members of the Burnout Paradise community.

The Legendary Cars pack takes four legendary cars and puts you in the driver's seat to race in the game, with a choice of Jansen 88 Special (which is an homage to the famous Back to the Future car, complete with hover capabilities), Hunter Cavalry Bootlegger (a Dukes of Hazzard nod, with appropriate horn), Hunter Manhattan Spirit (a tip of the hat towards Ghostbusters' Ecto 1 vehicle) and the Carson GT Firehawk (which takes its inspiration from K.I.T.T., the lead car of TV series Knight Rider).

In March 2009, the Toy Carspack and Boost Specialspack will be released. Toy Cars brings nine classic Burnout Paradise vehicles to the city with an outrageous toy twist. These crazy vehicles let you see some of your favourite Burnout Paradise Cars and Bikes as you've never imagined them - the perfect way to mix up an online session. The Burnout Paradise Boost Specials pack will be launched, boasting two ultra-performance boosting machines into Paradise City to burn it up with.

Finally, May 2009 will see the launch of Big Surf Island, which will be the biggest downloadable pack for Burnout Paradise yet, bringing a vast offshore island to the game, filled with more stunts, jumps and exciting opportunities for gameplay per square foot than anywhere else in Paradise City.

Expect more details on all these exciting downloads soon and a few surprises down the line, so keep that pedal warm and ready for some very special Burnout Paradise packs - and don't forget to visit the official site for even more information.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade designer interview

Electronic Arts gives ice hockey a different spin with its most recent PlayStation Network title. Lead Designer, Matt Mahar, hits the ice with an insider view on 3 on 3 NHL Arcade.

Why have you decided to go with a 3 vs. 3 game rather than a full roster ice hockey title?

EA is coming out with a 3 on 3 Arcade game for numerous reasons, one being that there are no options out there for consumers to play an arcade style hockey game. There are Street versions of sports games, but hockey has never been one of them and the NHL dev team felt that we could fill this void with a top quality product and give users a game to enjoy.

Another reason for the arcade version is, we want to turn people on about hockey, we truly believe it is the best sport on earth and want to show people the sport. So we built Arcade to attract people to play a hockey game, when they might not usually play one.

Can you describe some of the features in the game?

3 on 3 NHL Arcade gives a complete package with online and offline play, as well as power-ups, 40 NHL superstars, stat tracking, and leaderboards. As far as game modes are concerned we have Play Now and Online Play.

Play Now supports 3 v 3. This is great for local play with your friends and is a great time. Online play is truly full - we have Play a Friend, Quick Ranked games, which can support up to 3 v 3, and unranked games as well. Create and Custom game modes are also in the game and allow the user to customise their online experience.

What about the inclusion of power-ups in 3 on 3 NHL Arcade?

We have a total of eight power-ups. The way these work is that you hit an opponent and a power-up will fall out of the player and onto the ice. This power-up can be skated over by the hitting team and then applied to that user. These power-ups are hilarious and really create a game within a game: do you get the power-up or take the puck? It's really challenging to the user to make the right decision.

When playing against your friends or playing online, power-ups add a fun and challenging element to the game while keeping it competitive and authentic to hockey.

The overall feel of the game is fast with amped up hitting and very distinct player types. For the Arcade player types, we categorised the players into three groups: Strong; big, able to withstand hits. Fast; fast on the ice and very agile, but can't withstand the hits like a Strong. All-Around; good at everything, but not as fast and strong as others. These player types add a layer of strategy to the game that can't be forgotten about. Users will have to choose wisely and find the best combination of players to beat their opponent.

How does the game control compared to other, more typical NHL titles?

For Arcade we have two control set-ups, we have the Skill Stick, which is for all the veterans out there, and we have Button Controls for the first timers. We put shoot/check and pass/change player on the buttons so that anyone can pick up and play this game.

In addition to shoot/check and pass/change player on the buttons, we added in Spin Move and Trick shots. I am really excited about having these in the game because they give the user two more offensive weapons while on the ice. With spin move you can get away from hits and skate into open ice. This helps to limit the number of power-ups your opponent will get and will get you into open areas to make plays.

Secondly, are Trick Moves, in line with the new break away contest the NHL introduced last year - we put in some moves that will give the user some creative freedom. Trick moves allow you to flip the puck up and bat it out the air, do spinning toe drag shots, and pick the puck up on your stick and score from behind the net. These are really great moves that will influence the outcome of every game.

As I mentioned above we have Skill Stick in the game with all its glory. In addition to the familiar Skill Stick moves we have added Trick Shots to it. These are done using the right stick and a modifier. The outcome of this addition is a new mechanic that Skill Stick users will have fun with and will allow them to score some amazing goals.

With Button Controls and Skill Stick we have something for everyone. With the addition of Spin Moves and Trick Shots to Button Controls and the Skill Stick, the result is an electrifying game that looks as good as it feels and is easy to use.

What stands out for you as the coolest thing about the game?

There are so many cool things in 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, be it hitting guys out of the rink, performing a trick move from behind the net, or spinning away from a hit attempt that it's hard to nail down one cool thing. But I like the addition of power-ups to the game. They truly add to the game overall, adding an element of strategy to gameplay.

Killzone 2 "a true Hollywood sized experience"

Take a look behind the scenes of Killzone 2, as Guerrilla's Managing Director Herman Hulst and Game Director Mathijs de Jonge blow the lid off even more information on the epic title.

What were the most essential elements to convey and bring to the Killzone 2 experience?

Herman Hulst:  The ambition for any shooter in first person has to start with the core experience of gaming. It's all about asking the question of how you really immerse the player in the intensity, chaos and action of the game we're creating. The answer simply lies in the name of the game's genre, which seems so obvious but we actually put a lot of thought into thinking this through all the way. With a first person shooter we make sure that we're always in a first person viewpoint - whether we use a cover system or interact with the world, it has to be a first person viewpoint and intuitive.

We had the idea of a large scale, planetary invasion which is great for creating these huge battles with you in the front line. We took this idea and made sure the player has bodies around him most of the time, and there are a great variety and number of enemies to take care of.

The backdrop for all of this is a hostile world - you are on Helghan, and we want to make you feel unwelcome. We're aiming to create a real sense of scale and depth to the experience, a true Hollywood sized experience, that wouldn't be complete without some huge set pieces and great dramatic events. We take the player on quite a journey across the planet, visiting a variety of locations all with their own style and gameplay scenarios.

What sort of challenges have you encountered in the creation of the game?

HH: I think if you look back at the 2005 trailer, it was creating an engine that supports that kind of intensity, graphical detail, the quality of animation... it really is about the quality of production values and core experience across the board, so it's getting everything to that ultimate quality, that's where the time and attention goes to. There's not one particular part of development which has been a major hurdle, it's just spreading the resources - and it's a massive production, so getting everybody to work together towards this massive goal is the biggest thing for us.

Were there any temptations to bring in more alien looking monsters for the player to battle against?

Mathijs de Jonge: We though about that and very carefully experimented with those sort of things in the game - we have these spider critters that attack the player, but if we used more alien type creatures then we end up changing our main enemy, which is the Helghast with those iconic red eyes. So we decided that's not where we want to go. There are still a lot of enemy types we can create within the Helghast template, so gameplay wise there are still a lot of opportunities to explore.

How did the design of the Helghast style Sackboy in LittleBigPlanet's early promotional videos come about?

HH: That was something we designed here! We have our main Designer, the guy who originally came up with the Helghast visual concept, who put it together. It didn't take long compared to what we have to work on here - it was nice to work on!

What are the key points that you're really proud of in Killzone 2?

HH: I go back to the core experience. What I love is the way you hold your weapon, the way it feels and sounds, it really feels like you're actually carrying a weapon. Along with the impact that it's got when you fire it and when you hit an enemy. A game usually has two or three responses when an enemy gets hit - we have over 100. In a way it's very realistic, but it's over the top as well because the responses don't necessarily abide by the laws of physics.

And there's the destructibility of the environments, every single response to the bullet is believable, and that's probably the strength of the game. On top of that is the graphical beauty, but the core experience is probably something I'm even more proud of than the graphical detail, quality and smoothness of it.

What is it like working on PLAYSTATION 3?

HH: I think PS3 has allowed us to do all of this. As a studio we see it as our job to show off the capability of it - it's got a lot of raw power that we harness and it's been a pleasure. It's allowed us to create the game that we've always wanted to create and that's fantastic.

How has the relationship between Guerrilla and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI). progressed and evolved over time?

HH: The relationship is very good. We sold the company with a vision to still be culturally independent on one side, but on the other side be under the umbrella of Worldwide Studios with the opportunity to share knowledge, exchange resources, be close to marketing and be involved in these kinds of things. So it's the best of both worlds and I'm very grateful to the publisher that it's allowed us to be this independent because we get a particular culture that we're happy with that we're proud of, and we get to continue that.

MdJ: We're really happy with SCEI, as the company has given us the opportunity to make Killzone 2 as polished as it is now. If it was forced into release, the game couldn't be as good as it is now, so it's given us the exact amount of time to make it what it is. The technical support has also been really good and I'm happy that Sony saw quality in the game, allowed us time to polish it and was so willing to move the shipping date.

The game is very polished. We're really happy with the state of which it's in. You always find new ideas and don't have time to implement them in, but we can save them for the next project [laughs].

"Pure mayhem"

Crash Commando's big blasting mayhem is one of the latest titles on PlayStation Network to bring spectacular arcade action to your screens. eu.playstation.com sat down with developer EPOS Game Studios to get closer to the platform shooter.

Can you explain what Crash Commando is about to those who may be unfamiliar with the game?

Jan Almqvist, Lead Art/Design: Crash Commando is all about straightforward, pick-up-and-play action. No plot, just pure mayhem!

Where did the original idea come from?

Olof Gustafsson, Music/SFX/CEO: The initial idea for Crash Commando was inspired by a lot of different titles from the last two decades. One game that springs to mind is Jetpac on the old Commodore VIC-20. The challenge was to create a fun online game that clearly flirts with the retro genre, giving players the opportunity to play in teams or against each other in real time.

What were the main aims in creating Crash Commando?

OG: We really wanted to create a game that wouldn't cost players a fortune and at the same time give them a game that was as addictive as any high budget title out there. We also wanted to make something original and special without losing the most important aspect of any game - highly addictive and fun gameplay.

Can you give us an idea of the process you went through in getting Crash Commando on PlayStation Network?

OG: At first we produced a solid prototype of the game for PC and then we contracted an agent to handle the initial contact with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI), who liked the game.

What advantages has PSN afforded you in developing Crash Commando?

JA: Digital distribution in general has opened up a lot of opportunities and allows developers of various sizes to create software at different price points and to utilise non-traditional revenue models. We believe that we're still very early on in the development of this market and that PSN has a great advantage with its flexibility. Since it's also a free service it maximises the platform's potential, which is always a good thing.

So basically, the advantage PSN has afforded us is a great, flexible channel to the consumer, which otherwise would have been difficult to attain.

Can you go into detail about the game's online and multiplayer modes?

JA: The game is primarily an online game and there are not a lot of games out there that can match the intensity that players of Crash Commando will experience. In terms of modes there are the self-explanatory Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes and also the exclusive multiplayer game mode, Map Objectives.

Map Objectives is a team based mode consists of Sabotage and Espionage objectives. In a Sabotage game the attacking team needs to find and destroy control panels scattered across the map. A control panel is destroyed by planting a bomb on it and the trick is to keep the defenders from defusing them. The round ends when all control panels are destroyed or the time runs out.

In an espionage game, the attackers will have to find Data Terminals in the map and download data blocks. When a data block has been downloaded, it is time to run back to the base and upload it to headquarters. If a defender manages to kill an attacker carrying blocks, the data is automatically transferred back to the terminal. The round ends when all data from all terminals have been uploaded to headquarters.

Both varieties are played progressively across the entire map meaning that at the beginning of the game, only some control panels/data terminals are online.

What sort of downloadable content can we expect for Crash Commando in the future?

JA: All I can say is to expect the usual suspects and maybe a few surprises.

How important to you was it to include Artificial Intelligence controlled bots in the game?

JA: A lot of gamers appreciate the opportunity to get to know the game before heading out online so in that respect it was considered very important.

What would you say are the highlights of Crash Commando?

JA: At first glance, the game can seem simplistic and some might frown and assume there's no room for skill development since the movement and action is constrained to two dimensions. One definite highlight is when one realises how wrong that assumption is. Every game is filled with hilarious moments, many of which are down to how well the player times a shot or the ability to bank grenades off walls and platforms.

But aside from realising the depth of the core gameplay I would say the nerve wrecking intensity of a tight Map Objectives game. There is simply no time to breathe until the end!

What's the strangest or funniest thing to have happened while you've played Crash Commando?

JA: I don't know about the strangest thing and funny things happen all the time but one of the things that felt really good was a Map Objectives game on The Cave map. Our team had destroyed the first two sets of control panels quite quickly and had a lot of extra time but met a well organised defence on the last set of panels. We tried and tried and died and died.

Eventually, when the time had gone from almost ten minutes down to one and a half I changed strategy and decided to take the long road and bring a tank up with me for a final push. I also equipped the CAB weapon, which I could use to detonate the enemies' mines. I managed to get the tank up to the control panels and with a mixture of crazy luck and crazy skill wiped out the defence, allowing my team to destroy the last two panels.
