Blu-ray Disc explained

Discover a whole new world of High Definition gaming and entertainment with Blu-ray Disc and experience movies like never before.

Blu-ray Disc is the new standard of home entertainment, with each disc holding up to five times more information than a Standard Definition DVD. That means Blu-ray Disc can store High Definition digital video, sound, pictures, PC files and stunning games such as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which a normal DVD simply couldn't do.

Experience the ultimate in picture quality

Remember the first time you watched a DVD and saw how the picture looked fantastic compared to those of an ordinary television transmission? That's because DVD uses a higher bit rate than conventional TV broadcasts, meaning better picture and sound quality.

Blu-ray Disc works just like a DVD, only more powerful, meaning you get better picture quality than High Definition TV transmission. And with the option of a 24-frame output, you can experience movies and games on your PlayStation 3 like never before.

High Definition sound

Experiencing High Definition is about the audio as much as the about picture. With Blu-ray Disc you get HD sound and a complete recreation of the original master recording. Now, thanks to the capabilities of Blu-ray Disc, that sound can be delivered straight to your living room when you're playing your favourite game or watching the latest blockbuster film.

This digital multi-channel sound is an integral part of the experience too - imagine playing a game or watching a movie without any of the bangs, crashes, rumbles and other effects that literally shake you in your seat. With HD sound you feel like you are part of the action.

Blu-ray Disc truly is the only way to experience the very best in home entertainment, be it movies or games, and with PlayStation 3, you get the best of both worlds, a entertainment system that delivers next generation gaming thrills and High Definition blockbuster entertainment right into your front room.

The future of home entertainment has arrived - experience it now on PS3.

Your obsession confessions

Read which games the PlayStation Community has spent countless hours playing and find out what makes them so moreish.

Over at the official PlayStation Forums the community has been discussing which games they just can't stop playing and what it is that gives them such longevity. Here are the top ten time absorbing titles, along with the pick of the quotes from across Europe.

1. LittleBigPlanet

"Firstly, the game is for everyone. Second of all, I have never laughed that much in my entire life and was amazed that the developers gave us a chance to understand what kind of job they are doing during the creation of the levels. The game is a creation that does not have an end!" (resident1977, Poland)

2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

"I will be brief. I have just 15 games in my PS3 collection, and my favourite is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. I have been playing it for the second week and cannot get enough! No other game has attracted me so much (well, except for the first one of course!)." (RUS_BlueRay, Russia)

3. Grand Theft Auto IV

"I get lost just wandering in the streets, observing all the activity of a virtual metropolis." (Corpocannibal, Portugal)

4. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

"The story plot is so involving that it gets you moving." (MadSwitch, Italy)

5. Killzone 2

"The perfect FPS for me, this title is graphically astonishing; it's simply a must have. The gameplay is really well done and the ambience is amazing. Furthermore, the online multiplayer is excellent. A must buy." (MOKOVITA06, France)

6. Fallout 3

"The extension of the game is incredible and there are many different ways to play. In addition, the trophies are a huge challenge." (Vinil_69, Spain)

7. Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction

"This is a game for the whole family. It has fantastic graphics, you can play it for ages and when you are in Ratchet and his friends' company, the time really flies." (WhiteWolfDK, Denmark)

8. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

"I think I'm in the minority in that I have the most fun playing this game in single player. Albeit short, it's an intense, gripping story with amazing characters and moments that give you an instant adrenaline rush." (TheIronist, United Kingdom)

9. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

"In Oblivion there are no boundaries, except for the limits of your own persistence." (ImperatorA3, Netherlands)

10. Warhawk

"At 9:43 pm I say to myself that I will just play until 10:00 pm. Fifteen minutes later, when I think it is 10:00 pm it is already 00:15 am. Not again! I have to get up early in the morning." (Mindoci, Germany)

Thanks to everyone that participated in the discussion. There will be more Obsession Confessions threads in the coming weeks; in the meantime, join the hundreds of conversations happening right now at the official PlayStation Forums.

Team Rewards are only presented to the winning side, and come in the shape of various online goodies, such as screensavers and PlayStation Home gifts.

Joining is easy - just head over to The Game and pick whether you want to be in Team A or Team B. Then register your details, play some Challenges and bask in the glory of your victory. You can also create your own Challenges for others to try out (and if they do that earns you points), invite friends, follow team members and form your own leagues. TEKKEN 6 developer interview

Katsuhiro Harada, the director of the Tekken team, on the latest instalment of The King of Iron Fist Tournament on PS3 and PSP.

Can you explain the setting and plot for TEKKEN 6?
In TEKKEN 6, Jin Kazama has become the leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Up until now Jin was on the side of good, but as soon as he became head of the Mishima Zaibatsu he declares independence from and war against the rest of the world.

Kazuya Mishima and the G Corporation rise to stop him, and the world is entangled in the war and chaos that ensues as a result of the clash between these two. This time, it’s not just about the feud between father and son; it spills over into war around the globe.

What new characters have you introduced in TEKKEN 6?
Bob (USA) possesses incredible speed, despite being overweight. He used to be slim, but he felt underpowered so he began a unique training regimen to gain weight while maintaining his speed. His training paid off, and he produced remarkable results. He uses an acrobatic style of karate and his strengths are his speed, power and jumping ability. He hardly has any weakness.

Miguel is from Spain. During the war-driven chaos created by the Mishima Zaibatsu, Miguel’s younger sister was caught in an explosion and killed as a result of a Zaibatsu bombing strike. Miguel swears revenge against the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Jin Kazama, for his sister’s death.
Miguel has no formal martial arts training; he is simply a brawler. He has neither polished punches nor kicks, and he doesn’t assume any fighting stance; however, he has incredible reach and power.

Leo (Germany) is a Bajiquan practitioner, whose real name and gender are unknown and is hot on the trail of Kazuya Mishima of the G Corporation. The cool character design is very popular among Japanese players. Leo is very easy to control, and is a good character to choose to enjoy Tekken.

Zafina is a mysterious female and is the first character from the Middle East. Her storyline is heavily intertwined with the main plot and the storyline of the final boss character. She uses a form of assassination arts that has been passed down through the generations. This very intimidating style uses fighting stances that resemble spiders, lizards and scorpions.

Lars Alexandersson (Sweden) is an officer in the Jin Kazama-led Mishima Zaibatsu’s elite private forces; the Tekken Force.

Discontented with the way Jin ran the Mishima Zaibatsu, Lars led a great number of the Tekken Force in a rebellion against Jin. Lars uses a form of hand-to-hand combat taught in the Tekken Force. The characteristic of this style is its hard-to-read accelerated movement, making it easy to overpower opponents. Also, Lars has the ability to turn the tables on his opponent when he has his back to the wall.

Lars is the secret child of Heihachi Mishima, but the only ones who know are Lars and his Swedish mother. No one else, not even Heihachi, knows of this connection.

Alisa Bosconovitch is a robot said to have been modelled on the appearance of the daughter of Dr Bosconovitch (no one knows for sure); Dr Bosconovitch appeared in the console version of Tekken 3. This unique character has a variety of attacks and fighting systems never before seen in the series. More details on this fascinating character will be unveiled at a later date.

Apart from the traditional fighting modes, are there any other modes such as Adventure or Campaign?
It has a lot more to offer than other fighting games that contain only Versus and Practice modes. Scenario Campaign Mode and Online Mode, plus renewed and expanded customisation provide quite a lot of content for fans to enjoy.

What online features does the game have?
The game includes some very nice online features such as the online battle, leaderboards or downloading the ghosts of the best player to practise. The Scenario Mode also allows you to play with your friends online.

What plans do you have for additional download content from PlayStation Store?
There is a strong possibility we will. However, even if we were to do so, it would be free to the end user.

What are the differences between the PSP and PS3 versions?
Obviously the biggest difference is the graphics as the power of these two systems is different. However, we did or best to adapt the PS3 version to the PSP in the best way possible. I don’t think that the fans will be disappointed.

What are you most proud of in the game?
I can’t cover them all. This is my 15th year on the series, the longest for a director on the franchise, so I’ve helped come up with most of the core spec in the game and a lot of the ideas as well. Even down to story setting and characters’ items.

Which are your favourite characters and why?
Jin Kazama has been the main character in the series for the longest time. The background story has been kind of portrayed through his eyes. Starting as a young and innocent boy, Jin has experienced the evils of society and the corruption brought about by power. He is gradually transformed by his ambition until the world sees him as a villain. This is the story arc I have been planning for 10 years.

Heihachi Mishima often stands out because of his appearance but personally I like his character. He is often portrayed as a villain, but he has a lot of human qualities. These human qualities portrayed in Heihachi are scarier than any monster or demon.

How do you go about creating each character's backstory?
I used to only create enough of a mythology for a character as was needed for his or her project design sketches, but as the series and its fan base grew, gamers wanted to know more and more about the world of Tekken. That's what led us to what we have today. In the past we worried about backstory only when actually creating a character; nowadays it's an important part of what we do for our fans.

PSP Essentials: Silent Hill: Origins

Welcome to the world’s most terrifying town.

If you've ever wondered just how the town of Silent Hill became the eerie vision that has been seen over four previous games on PlayStation, then Silent Hill: Origins answers that.

The game follows Travis Grady, a truck driver who has become stranded in Silent Hill, with a few of his own demons to contend with. Throughout the course of this terrifying experience, both his and the town's secrets come to the fore. Featuring classic Silent Hill gameplay - but with tweaks and additions created specifically for PSP - players can now lock onto enemies to attack and utilise an enhanced camera designed specifically for the handheld system.

Hauntingly realised, Silent Hill: Origins is an adrenaline pumping tale of survival horror that's guaranteed to keep you pinned to the edge of your seat from the moment the game's creepy opening credits roll, right through to its terrifying conclusion.

Best Bit:
Every time you round a corner while holding the torch, it casts a light on what lies ahead. And sometimes, what hides in wait is more horrifying than what you could ever imagine.

Ashley Greene Says ‘New Moon’ ‘Keeps You On The Edge Of Your Seat’PlayStation Essentials – obsession confessions

PES 2010 kicks of for a new season

Pro Evolution Soccer returns with revamped visuals to bring striking realism to the arcade football classic.

Boots blacked for the new season

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer team has worked hard on their game's graphics this season, and in PES 2010, player likenesses are uncannily realistic.

UEFA Champions League mode lets you launch your own campaign for European glory. Fully licensed teams, kits and stadia add great realism and the TV-style presentation, featuring a rendition of Handel's Zadoc The Priest as the players line up, captures the stirring atmosphere of the world's premier club competition.

On the pitch, player animations and ball physics have also been improved, adding a further layer of realism to the high tempo arcade action the series is renowned for. In the manager's office, the Team Management options have been tweaked, making team tactics - which are as flexible and comprehensive as ever - easier to access. One helpful addition is an overall rating out of 100 for each player that decreases if you try to play that individual on the wrong side or out of position.

Efforts have also been made to improve how the game sounds, and alongside the previously mentioned Handel, you can now listen to terrace favourites from bands such as Kaiser Chiefs and The Chemical Brothers while browsing the menus. During matches, crowd reactions are now more dynamic, featuring team-specific chants and a more immersive reflection of the ebb and flow of the beautiful game.

Keeping the ball under control

Long-term fans of the series expect fast-paced, accessible arcade football that anyone can pick up and play, with underlying layers of complexity for top players to master. PES 2010 delivers all of this, while also representing a revamp in a series that is famed for minor tweaks as opposed to major overhauls.

The improved ball physics bring about many of the gameplay changes as spin and bounce play their part. Players' first touches are more lifelike as skilful footballers can deal with awkward passes more smoothly, while others are less composed under pressure. Similarly, technically gifted players are able to distribute the ball more consistently. They even take a moment to look up before attempting a long pass, ensuring you choose your passes wisely.

Alongside UEFA Champions League mode, PES stalwart the Master League returns for a deep simulation of the running of a football club, on and off the pitch. You'll have to work hard on team tactics, devise training regimes based on player development and rotate your squad to cope with injuries, dips in form and the fatigue that comes with a gruelling professional season.

Completing the roster of modes is Become a Legend, allowing you to take control of a single footballer throughout his career. You'll start at the bottom for an unknown team, but play well and pop up on the scoresheet, and you may attract the attention of bigger clubs and even your international manager.

Playing away

Offline multiplayer is where PES veterans will have sunk countless hours over the years and, in PES 2010, Community mode is a great way to reinforce those old rivalries. You can add your friends' names to a group and the game will record results between each member, allowing you to see unequivocally who the better player is at the end of the season. You can even set up leagues and tournaments.

Online, you can jump straight into one-on-one or two-vs-two matches, or enter one of the regular competitions organised for the community. You can also compare your record with the rest of the world on the leaderboards.

Legends is where you take the player you have created in Be a Legend mode and team up with three other players against a computer-controlled opponent. To encourage teamwork, you can earn bonus points for good movement, successful link-up play and, of course, smooth goals, which contribute to a leaderboard displaying the best online quartets in the world.

‘New Moon’ Star Ashley Greene Picks Her Favorite ScenesGridiron for everyone with Madden NFL Arcade

Gridiron for everyone with Madden NFL Arcade

Danny Doeberling, Associate Designer of Madden NFL Arcade, tells eu.playstation.com about the new American Football title coming to PlayStation Store.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade made ice hockey more accessible to those not so familiar with it; is Madden NFL Arcade trying to do something similar with American football?

Yes, NHL Arcade did a great job of breaking down barriers for making a quick, pick up and play sports experience. Football can be overwhelming for newcomers so we eliminated that steep learning curve by simplifying playcalling. You don't need to know entire playbooks or formations any more. All you do is pick a type of pass or run and the game calls the play for you.

Which aspects of gridiron have you focused on?

We tried to balance arcade gameplay with the traditional Madden experience. The hits are harder, catches can be spectacular, and big plays can happen at any moment.

How do the controls work?

We have two types of controls in Madden NFL Arcade. There is a simplified version with everything you need in a convenient place. If you are familiar with the standard Madden controls, we give you that option as well.

Why five members per team?

The number of players on the field is always a balancing act. When there are too many, it decreases the chances of a big play and it looks crowded on our condensed field. On the flip side, too few players on the field and defence becomes frustrating due to too much open field. I think we found a great balance with 5 on 5, as it is fun to play on both sides of the ball.

How else have you changed the traditional rules?

You have four downs to progress up the field and score, and if you can't then the ball turns over to the other team. After a touchdown, you can choose to take the extra point or try to go for the two point conversion.

If you're not happy with that, you can customise the rules however you want.

What were you trying to achieve with the art style?

We took a more stylised view of each of the different player positions. Wide receivers have that tall speedy look; the quarterback is a typical hero figure; and the big guys... well, they are some big guys! We really wanted to inject the larger than life personality of the NFL.

How do you earn Game Changers and what do they do?

Game Changers are given to the user throughout the course of the game and can be used for one play. We have some crazy ones too - speed up or slow down the game; freeze a player, or use Entourage and your entire offensive line shows up as a convoy to the end zone.

We look forward to seeing the strategy used once players start earning them. Guaranteed, you'll be constantly hoping you get one to use on the next play.

Can we expect to see arcade versions of other sports, such as football or golf?

I really don't have an answer for that. If people like the gridiron and hockey games then maybe there will be a need to make others. Until then, the next game I'll be pitching is 7 on 7 Extreme Rugby Curling. Cross your fingers for that one!

Dragon Age: Origins developer interview

Burning for more Dragon Age: Origins information? The game’s Principal Lead Designer, Mike Laidlaw, provides some fiery facts for you.

Can you provide a brief rundown on Dragon Age: Origins?

Dragon Age: Origins is a dark, brutal, epic fantasy set in a brand new world created by BioWare. As the spiritual successor of the wildly popular Baldur's Gate series, it offers party-based combat, character customisation, an enormous world to explore, and most importantly, an incredible story.

Origins is a game for anyone interested in playing through an epic adventure set in a new dark fantasy world. One of the things we're really proud of is how accessible the game is, in both controls and difficulty. Tactical geniuses will be able to coordinate brilliant strategies, while those looking to just charge into the combat can rely on our advanced Artificial Intelligence to keep their party fighting smart.

What elements in Dragon Age: Origins will appeal to those who may not have played role-playing games before?

The story and pacing are what will draw them in. Each origin story starts out with a simple set of abilities and goals, but before long the story starts to unfold like a rich tapestry and the mechanics become steadily more complex and engrossing. It's a very organic process, but by the middle of the game you're controlling dozens of abilities in a tactical dance of death, and yet because you worked up to it, orchestrating combat feels very natural.

What are the primary details you had to portray in the game, from a story and gameplay perspective?

In both cases we were going for a mix of the familiar and the new. Applied to story, what that means is that we very firmly rooted Origins in the fantasy that you know and love. Dwarves live underground, elves have pointy ears, and so on. But then we started twisting expectations, changing elements of their situations to be darker, grittier and more compelling. There are parts in Origins that will challenge and shock your notions of fantasy.

What kind of scenarios can players expect to be involved in?

As a Grey Warden, the player will have to gather an army, which means convincing humanity, the elves, mages and dwarves to all work together against the Blight. You'll be battling demons, pushing back the spreading hordes of the darkspawn and even descending into the Deep Roads: the shattered dwarven highways that once connected their vast underground empire. Until the darkspawn pushed them back to a single city, nearly wiping out their populace in the process, that is. Expect to go toe-to-toe with dragons, werewolves, the undead and the corrupted forces of the Blight.

How do the Dragon Age: Origins novels tie into the game?

The Stolen Throne and The Calling are excellent primers into the world of Dragon Age. They are prequels that help set up the story, and players who've read the novels will be privy to added information and the motivations of many of the main characters in Origins. They were penned by the game's Lead Writer, David Gaider, and he's done an excellent job of translating the Dragon Age world into a new format.

Are there any particular moments in the game's development which stand out?

The game's been in development a long time, so there are almost too many to recount, but one that's always stood out for me was at this year's [2009] Penny Arcade expo. We were letting people go hands-on with the game for about half an hour [at a time], and if they succeeded at a particular challenge we would let them don the Grey Warden armour, pick up the shield and sword and then we'd photograph them in front of a 15 foot high statue of the Archdemon.

One girl, a huge fan of our games, went through the test, passed and then very carefully stood up out of her wheelchair for the photograph, because she had [really] earned it. It was both touching and awesome.

What was it like working with well known voice talent including Tim Curry and Kate Mulgrew?

It's always a joy to work with professionals like Tim and Kate, actors who will dive right into the character and really get what their motivations are. Luckily for us, both of them were working with characters with nuance and depth, and it was great to see their interpretations of the characters.

The most memorable part of those sessions had to be the excitement they both brought to the roles. Once they'd figured out what was really going on with the story, both actors were ready to bring their best performances. I think meeting them in the game shows that enthusiasm.

Can you go into some detail about what we can expect from the downloadable content on PlayStation Network?

So far we've already announced two expansions to the game. The first is a full party member, Shale, who is the central character of The Stone Prisoner. Once Shale joins the party, lending the rocky might of a golem to the team, the player gets to experience its commentary, storyline and more for the rest of the game.

There's also Warden's Keep, which explores the history of the Grey Wardens, and introduces new abilities to the game. That's all we've announced so far, but we have a two-year plan for added content to the game so there will be more. Oh yes, there will be more.

Darkly comic, and absurdly funny, I Sell The Dead was the subject of rave reviews throughout its tour of the film festival circuit in 2009. Now, you can experience this brilliantly written, superbly acted and horrifically enjoyable horror comedy in High Definition on your PlayStation 3.

Nineteenth century justice has finally caught up with grave robbers Arthur Blake (Lost's Dominic Monaghan) and Willie Grimes. From stealing trinkets as a young boy from the dead to a partnership with Willie, Arthur recounts a fear-filled adventure filled with tales of hunting creatures unwilling to take their place in the ground.

Gremlins

Mogwai; they’re cute, clever, mischievous and intelligent. And let’s not forget the rules to prevent these furry friends from turning into fierce fiends. Don't ever get them wet. Keep them away from bright light. And no matter how much they cry, no matter how much they beg - never, ever feed them after midnight.

When young Billy Peltzer takes possession of his cuddly new pet, a Christmas present from his father, he gets a whole lot more than he bargained for when he messes up and breaks the first rule of the Mogwai by getting it wet. Hilarious and packed full of scares, Gremlins is one of the most memorable creature features of all time thanks to director Joe Dante and producer Steven Spielberg coupled with the superb puppetry work crafted by the masterful special effects artists behind this perfect Halloween fright fest.

Horsemen Of The Apocalypse

Fright Fest

Hardened police detective Aidan Breslin has grown increasingly distant from his two young sons Alex and Sean since the death of his wife. At work, he finds himself thrust into an investigation of twisted serial killings rooted in the Biblical prophecy of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

As Breslin grapples with each new revelation in the case, he slowly discovers a shocking connection between himself and the four suspects. Can you solve the Blue Toad Murder Files?

There has been a mysterious murder in the village of Little Riddle – time to put your powers of deduction to the test…

Murder is in the air in the quirky English village of Little Riddle. Thankfully, the famous Blue Toad detectives are on hand to solve the case and save the day. Or at least they can if your keen sense of problem solving is up to scratch.

Taking the role as one of the four Blue Toad sleuths, you and up to three players are thrown into a world of puzzles as you aim to solve various crime related mysteries in six distinct episodes, each one downloadable from PlayStation Network.

While each episode dovetails into the next with a handy cliffhanger to spur you on to the next, you can still play each one individually should you prefer your doses of comedic murder a little more bite-sized. It's like interacting with a TV series murder mystery with you in total control over how much you take part in - and you're the star detective of it all.

It's criminal

Developer Relentless Software is no stranger to brainteasers, given its pedigree of creating the popular quiz series, Buzz! on various PlayStation formats - although Blue Toad Murder Files offers to take you down a different, shadow filled alley, full of tricky puzzles that will test your grey matter in a variety of ways.

Rather than throw you straight into a hodunit scenario, you meet and greet a number of Little Riddle's brilliantly caricatured folk who offer gossip, clues and background information to help you build the scene, before you're given a puzzle to solve, to aid your progress.

These mind-benders include solving anagrams, piecing together a jigsaw style puzzle, slotting an identikit photo together based on a character you were talking to earlier and choosing a correct item or path of a suspect based on the verbal recount of a witness. There are many more puzzle types to keep you on your toes, as well as a medal system that rewards you for getting answers right on your first attempt while keeping under a certain time.

The case is in your hands

It's not just a matter of blundering your way through the investigation, however, because at various points during the case you'll be quizzed about key plot points to see if you've been paying attention to all that's been happening around you. Your time to shine comes at the end of each chapter, as you wrap up all your clues and interrogations to take a guess at who committed the foul deed.

With four players, an extra element of excitement is added to proceedings - whether it's helping each other out or trying to see who's the best at small town law enforcement. Each of you gets a puzzle to complete, while at the end of each chapter you all take a guess at the murderer, with everything revealed shortly after - to cheers or jeers.

Well presented and fun, Blue Toad Murder Files lets you become a budding super sleuth without ever needing to leave your sofa. Expect a more detailed look into the mind of Relentless Software and the game very soon, right here at eu.playstation.com.
