Game Talk: DJ Hero 2

Get the lowdown on DJ Hero 2 with Jamie Jackson, creative director at Freestyle Games.

Jamie Jackson, creative director at Freestyle Games, gives eu.playstation.com the inside scoop on the upcoming PS3 hit.

It's been less than a year than a year since DJ Hero was first released on PlayStation 3. Have you been working on DJ Hero 2 right from the moment the first game was released?

We basically killed ourselves on DJ Hero because we were pulling 15-hour days for quite a long time to get it done. There was a mass exodus as soon as finished it, but then very quickly we had to get straight back on it. So DJ Hero 2 has been made in around seven months.

Was it easier developing the game second time around considering the engine and game mechanics were already all in place?

Yeah, we had the foundations and everything in place but at the same time we didn't want to just throw out the same game again with different music, because it's important to us to have new features such as the Battle Mixes. That was a big win for us. We actually had planned to include them in the first game and made some cool mixes I genuinely hope see the light of day.

Have you got a favourite that has yet to be released?

Absolutely! It was the A-Team theme song versus Knight Rider and it was amazing. I need to see that song come out because it is awesome. We really had to get those features in this time, so to include that and the finessed Freestyling was great.

How did you find licensing the music for the mixes for DJ Hero 2? Was it a simpler process second time around?

If I was to say it was easier, the music licensing team would kill me because it wasn't easy for them. There were elements that were easier because last time they had to go and explain a game that didn't exist. Now they have something that exists and it's successful. So in terms of explaining what's going on to an artist, it's easier and the net result of that is we have much more current music in DJ Hero 2.

You've certainly made a lot of changes in terms of how the game is presented to players. Was it always the intention to alter it so much?

We're a very self critical studio to be honest. We'll look at the product we produce and we'll be critical about what we didn't get right or what we weren't happy with. A couple of those were things like the graphics on the front end of the game which, while being great pieces of graffiti artwork, leaned too much towards a hip hop game and that's not what we were. We needed to address that.

Also, feedback on how people were doing in the game wasn't as good as we would have liked so we wanted to improve on that. We also didn't want to go down the route of it being like a pseudo piece of studio equipment; we wanted to have some nice clean graphics that simply conveyed winning and losing. That's it.

One of the big DJ superstars featured in the game is Deadmau5. He seems like a perfect fit for the game because of the mouse head he wears during his performances.

Yeah totally; he's been around a long time but now he can fill stadiums because he's just exploded on the scene, and I think a big part of it is that head he wears. There's a bit more of a theatrical edge to it than other DJs out there and he plays to that, but at the same time he laces it with very cool DJ music.

And of course you also have the biggest DJ in the world - Tisto. Was it easy to get him involved in the game?

He was banging our door down on DJ Hero. He was at our launch party for the game at E3 2009 where we had Jay-Z and Eminem. He came over to us saying "I want to be in your game!" and we just couldn't fit him in because of timing. I think it's actually worked out better because this game is more geared towards having the likes of Tiesto and Deadmau5.

Where do you see rhythm-based games going in the future given the way games and consoles are evolving rapidly with the advent of Stereoscopic 3D and motion control?

I think there is lots of interesting stuff coming up with motion control that is pretty interesting but for me music games live or die for on the social side of things. They are about having fun with groups of people. Very rarely do you see social, dip-in, dip-out gamers sat at home playing a music game on their own.

There might be the odd one or two that would pick up the latest big release, but generally it's a social experience. It's about watching and laughing and having fun with someone playing that kind of game, so for me, music games are part of that and they've got to carry on being a part of that space.

Haunting Halloween highlights on PSN

Make your Halloween an unforgettable scream! PlayStation Network has a casket full of incredible entertainment that’s just the trick… and treat.

There's no need to be haunted by a lack of entertainment this Halloween thanks to PlayStation Network. Whether you're a PlayStation 3 or PSP owner, there's a gloriously ghoulish glut of games, downloads, comics and movies to download from PlayStation Store. The choice is frighteningly diverse - so it's up to you if you want to be entertained while you're sitting down on the couch or hiding behind it...

Costume Quest
Halloween themed games don't come along very often, and Costume Quest has the added delight of being one of the most unique role-playing games on PS3. Trick or treat your way through the neighbourhood and bash a myriad of monsters using a vast variety of special costumes.

Siren Blood Curse
A mixture of urban myths and the living dead are yours to explore in this gruesome adventure game on PS3. Available in 12 TV series style episodes, prepare to be chilled to the core as you and the visitors of Hanuda must save any survivors from the terrifying Shibito.

Burn Zombie Burn
The undead are on the march and only you have the brains to stop them. The cranium crunching beasts are roaming on your PS3, which means frantic arcade style zombie blasting is the only solution. Grab a mate for the unbeatable two player mode, pick up your shotgun and make those brain-dead fiends pay.

Monster Madness: Grave Danger
While you're in a monster mashing mood, this PS3 game is sure to make you feel like a hero as you roam through suburbia to save your town from a terrible evil. Join up to three friends and fend off over 70 different monster types in a splatter-laden shooter which is sure to have you on the edge of your seat.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Take the ghost busting crew anywhere you want with the latest adventures of Ghostbusters, on PSP. Join the original cast as a new recruit aiming to take on free-roaming vapours, focused non-terminal repeating phantoms... and worse. Afraid?

Monstrous minis on PlayStation Store
Sometimes the spookiest scares come in the smallest packages, which is exactly where minis come into play. The minis category on PlayStation Store features a massive mixture of great and gruesome bite-sized titles to download just in time for Halloween. Action fiends can blast their way through brutes galore in the likes of Alien Zombie Death, Dracula - Undead Awakening, Age of Zombies and the refreshingly different platform game Monsters (probably) Stole My Princess.

If you're after something a little more cerebral (just be sure to watch out for brain munching zombies looking for a feast in the process), then Freekscape: Escape from Hell, Zombie Tycoon and Hysteria Project may be just up your dark and shadowy alley.

Don't be fooled by their size - minis pack a monstrous punch.

Dark downloads
The frightful number of downloadable Halloween goodies on PlayStation Store is sure to keep you on your toes. Suitably scary themes for games such as Dead Nation can give your PS3 a delightfully dark demeanour, while you can dress up Sackboy in LittleBigPlanet on PlayStation 3 in a werewolf costume, Halloween mask or even download a spooky Monsters Level Kit.

Even the Wild West isn't safe from the living dead, thanks to the Undead Nightmare pack for Red Dead Redemption, which introduces ghost towns, cemeteries and zombies to the rootin' shootin' PS3 action adventure.

Digital Comics
Digital Comics on PSP plays host to a massive collection of creepy comic books to take with you wherever you go. Marvel Comics wants your brains with the hilarious and grisly comedy Marvel Zombies and Marvel Zombies 2. DC Comics also has its own take on horror with the excellent Trick or Treat, the zombie laden Black Cherry Bombshells and the utterly essential Sandman series.

The independent comic scene is also rife with brilliant horrors thanks to publishers like IDW and Markosia. From a whole range of Silent Hill and Castlevania comics to sink your teeth into, to titles such as From the Pages of Bram Stoker's Dracula: Harker, True Blood and Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, there's plenty to tingle your spine with.

PlayStation Store Video Store
If monstrous movies are your thing, the PlayStation Store Video Store has a staggering number of nerve-jangling films. There are classic chillers including The Exorcist, Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Ring, savage slashers such as Jeepers Creepers, My Bloody Valentine and the 2010 remake A Nightmare On Elm Street, and monster mashes like George A. Romero's Land of the Dead and The Wolfman. Go on - get downloading... if you dare.

VidZone
Halloween isn't complete without a little partying, so make sure you have the soundtrack sorted for things that go bump in the night with VidZone, the free music video service on PS3. Get on down with the funky sounds of music videos such as Michael Jackson's Thriller, Godsmack's Voodoo and Alice Cooper's Feed My Frankenstein. If you're feeling a little too tired from all your trick or treating, you can also have VidZone do the work for you by downloading the Halloween Hits Playlist instead.

You don't have to travel far to get some scarily good fun with PlayStation. Thanks to PSN there are plenty of downloads to give you goosebumps at any time of the year - so don't miss a trick and make sure you get the ultimate treat over at PlayStation Store right now...

A perfectly gruesome action adventure to get your hands on this October, Dead Rising 2 features swarms of the undead who can't wait to get their teeth into you. Take on the role of Chuck Greene and battle your way through Fortune City in a bid to find a cure for your infected daughter.

Use an arsenal of humorous weapons, from lawn mowers to fire extinguishers, to pummel your zombie foes before time runs out and you lose everything...

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition

If you don't fancy going it alone on 31 October, Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition allows two players to jump into the ghastly action together as agents Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. Set in Kijuju, Africa, you search for a biological arms dealer soon turns into a fight for survival as you discover that the inhabitants of Kijuju have mutated into gruesome, aggressive beings.

Investigate the secrets of Kijuju and battle hideous creatures using the PlayStation Move motion controller. If you're brave enough to play alone, you will be ably assisted on your mission by a computer-controlled character.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Take a step back in time to 1022; the world is in darkness, isolated from the heavens and populated by evil. Play as Gabriel Belmont, a member of the Brotherhood of Light, a group of holy knights who protect and defend the innocent against the horrific creatures that terrorise the land.

After the murder of your wife, you must take down the souls of the dead who roam amongst the living.

BioShock 2

If you're after a truly hair-raising experience this Halloween, enter the eerie world of Rapture in BioShock 2. Creatures known as Splicers prowl the ruined metropolis to the piercing shrieks and screams of other unfortunate souls as you explore this chilling, underwater terrain.

Try to seek out the Little Sister you once protected, but beware, as Little Sisters roam the destroyed town accompanied by their Big Daddy protectors. Keep an eye out for other chilling threats that lurk in this creepy world, too. You have been warned...

Demon's Souls

Full of chilling missions and eerie moments, Demon's Souls throws you into the dark realm of Boletaria, and you must save it from its cursed fate. Upgrade weapons by taking the souls of downed enemies and touch blood stains to see the last moments of someone before their death. This may sound gory, but it is also an insight into where blood-curdling danger lies.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

If you're on the move this Halloween, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on PSP could be the game to keep you in spine-chilling spirits. Play as Harry Mason, an ordinary man whose daughter has gone missing in one of the most terrifying and mysterious towns in America: Silent Hill.

Explore the eerie, snow covered town and try to avoid the demons and monsters that lurk within the shadows.

Singularity

Fancy some modern-day terror? Head over to the island of Katorga-12 in Singularity and take on some intense mutants in this first person shooter. Locked down since a Soviet experiment went very wrong in the 1950s, Katorga-12 is now open for business again, and you have been sent to investigate some bizarre reports coming from the mysterious island.

Explore the island using a host of weapons, including time itself, to stop the catastrophic accident known as the Singularity from destroying mankind. You'll spend most of your time on the edge of your seat as you investigate the secrets of this creepy, unfamiliar place.

God of War III

If epic battles and Greek mythology take your fancy, God of War III will satisfy your needs. Take on the role of the mighty Spartan warrior Kratos and begin your action-packed journey to Mount Olympus.

Fearlessly fight your way to the top of the vast mountain while taking on the undead armies of Zeus, the deadly Minotaur and grotesque Cyclops. Wield a range of exciting new weapons, fight your way to face Zeus himself and unleash some serious vengeance.

Dante's Inferno

Feeling spookily romantic this Halloween? We've got that covered, too. Play as Dante, a warrior searching for his true love Beatrice who is being held hostage in Hell by Lucifer. The evil demon plans to wed Beatrice, escape Hell and travel to Heaven to overthrow God.

If you want to see your lady again, you'll have to battle through the nine terrifying circles of Hell, fight Lucifer's minions and overcome your own demons. Can you face the horrific sins of your own family and the atrocious crimes you have committed? This spine-tingling journey will put you to the test.

Game Talk: Costume Quest

Go trick or treating with project lead, Tasha Harris, and president of Double Fine Studios, Tim Schafer.

eu.playstation.com dons its Halloween mask for a chat with Costume Quest's project lead, Tasha Harris and Double Fine Studios' president, Tim Schafer, to find out everything you need to know about their brand new game available to download from PlayStation Store today.

Can you tell us about the story of Costume Quest?

TH: Costume Quest is based around a pair of twins, and you play as one of them. The character you don't choose at the beginning of the game ends up getting kidnapped by monsters who are invading your suburban neighbourhood, trying to raid every house of all its candy. Your quest throughout the game is to go trick or treating and battle these monsters in order to get your sibling back.

Where did the inspiration for a Halloween themed game come from?

TH: I originally thought of it when I was a kid, actually. I always loved Halloween growing up and I was always drawing stuff. So I remember drawing these little kids trick or treating, thinking that it would make a really cool game. I was just hoping that nobody else would make a Halloween game before I was able to.

Did you both work on the story together?

TS: Tasha and her team came up with the basic story and wrote some of the dialogue. I came in after that to write a bunch of dialogue on top of that, do some edits and add some story elements.

TH: Tim did a funny pass!

TS: It was really funny already but it was great for me to just show up and write because usually I have to worry about calling the plumber to make sure the toilet is working in the office, and do the writing. It was cool to just show up and do the fun part.

Why follow up a disc based game like Brtal Legend with a downloadable title for PlayStation Network?

TS: We had just made Brtal Legend, which took four years to make and millions and millions of dollars. We had been meaning to make games in a shorter amount of time because I have a lot of creative people at the company and a lot of ideas that I want to get out there. Making one game every four years is just too long.

When I started in the industry my first game, Monkey Island, took less than a year to make and I really wanted to get back to that; to getting more games done. That meant making shorter games for less money, which is also a great way to do more creative stuff.

Can you tell us about some of the quests that players will embark on over the course of the game?

TH: One thing I wanted to avoid was that a lot of role-playing games (RPGs) require a lot of grinding, so there are a lot of diverse quests for everyone. Even in the first mission you get to race, build a costume, find pie ingredients and then there are some combat based quests too. A lot of them are about using your costumes in different ways. You'll have to solve quests or get through certain areas by figuring out what costume to wear.

Was it challenging trying to keep the quests fresh throughout the game?

TH: That was definitely one of the most challenging things for me because I'm pretty new to game design. I think that since I have been playing games for a long time - especially RPGs - I have an idea of what's fun.

What kind of costumes will players get the chance to don over the course of the game?

TH: There's a robot, a knight, the Statue of Liberty, a unicorn costume (my personal favourite!), a space warrior and a pumpkin.

TS: The pumpkin is kind of scary! When that thing comes to life it freaks people out. It's probably the scariest thing in the game.

Download Costume Quest today from PlayStation Store for a good scare.

Demo Guide - Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

Download the demo Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II today and put your lightsaber skills to the test on PlayStation 3.

With Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II arriving in October 2010 on PS3, LucasArts has opened its vaults and released a downloadable demo on PlayStation Store for you to get to grips with. Check out this guide to mastering the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II demo available for free on PlayStation Store now.

Lightsaber slayer

A Jedi's most important weapon is the lightsaber, so you're going to need to master Starkiller's attacks with this devastating weapon at the outset of the demo. Lightsaber slashes are performed by pressing the Square button. By combining it with the Triangle button and Circle button you can execute more complicated and powerful attacks, such as a lightsaber slash followed by a blast of lightning, or a Force Push that sends enemy Stormtroopers hurtling into the air.

Master the Force

Starkiller's other essential weapon is his ability to harness the power of the Force to elevate objects, move platforms and even hurl TIE Fighters through the air. To use the Force, simply hold down the R2 button when facing an illuminated object. Once the object is in your grasp you can hurl it at an enemy using the right stick or even use it to smash terminals that power the force fields that are blocking your way into the next area.

Mind control

One of the new powers you will be able to wield in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II is the deceptive Mind Trick, a clever ability that can turn an enemy against their allies, or even cause them to leap to their demise. In the demo, you can use this to do both, depending on how you want to approach each battle with Darth Vader's Stormtrooper army. The Mind Trick the perfect offensive attack should you find yourself running low on health and want someone else to fight your battles for you!

Take down a TIE Fighter

Over the course of the action-packed demo you'll get to sample some of the game's hugely cinematic moments, including pulling TIE Fighters from the air with your Force Power and slamming them into an electrical pylon to create a makeshift bridge that will help you gain access to the next area. To do this correctly, your timing needs to be impeccable. First, be sure to block the ship's laser blasts by holding down the L2 button. Then, when the TIE Fighter is in range and glowing, press down the R2 button to yank it out of the air and hurl it at the pylon. You'll need three direct hits to create the bridge, so make sure your aim is perfect.

Unleash Force Fury

During the final moments of the demo you'll unlock Force Fury, a special ability that massively increases Starkiller's attack damage. To trigger it, press the L3 and R3 buttons at exactly the same time. Now, unleash Force Fury on the final wave of Stormtroopers and those huge AT-ST Walkers coming your way!

Get a taste for Jedi combat and download the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II demo for free from PlayStation Store today.

Nicolas Cage Says ‘Ghost Rider’ Sequel Will Offer A ‘Very Fresh Take’Weekend Essentials 45

F1 2010 developer interview

Stephen Hood, chief game designer, chats to eu.playstation.com about bringing the Formula 1 season to life on PlayStation 3.

The game is split into two sections: Live the Life and Be the Driver. Can you explain how both work?

Be the Driver is what people would expect - driving around the circuits. We're pushing the technology with tyres blistering, marbling and all those kind of cool things that racing nerds like me are really in to. The second aspect, Live the Life, is centred around the career mode and the paddock. The idea with it is to make you feel as though you are competing in the world of Formula 1 and whether you're doing well or exceeding the team's expectations.

You also have media, celebrities and fans hanging around in the paddock eager to ask you questions, find out your opinion on the team and other drivers. There is a definite split: it's a racing game, but could you also be a real Formula One driver.

What has been the most challenging aspect for you as a developer in bringing F1 2010 to PlayStation 3?

Definitely the car handling because it's quite difficult to depict this in an accurate sense, as very few of us have driven Formula 1 cars. It's all about the speed, the handling, the aerodynamics and the short breaking distance, but you still have to have some elements of fun in there. That has certainly been the hardest thing to do.

How closely have you worked with Formula 1 to ensure that car specifications and racing rules are all up to date?

We've worked with them quite a lot and have developed a good relationship. We were able to speak with them on occasion about particular elements we wanted to put in the game, plus we were able to speak with each of the teams, which has been a huge help. And of course, we always went back to just watching races on the TV.

What advantages are there in releasing the game later in the racing season?

Well, it enabled us to watch the races throughout the year and then continue to tune the cars in the game, which makes for a far better experience.

What kind of efforts have you gone to as a developer to try and capture the kind of energy Formula 1 racing brings with it?

I think atmosphere has been a huge thing for us. It carries through to when you're sitting in the garage and the crews are working. If you look to your left you can see your teammate and his crew, and everything else that's going on around the area. By including that, you can really feel that rivalry building throughout race seasons.

It's hugely important for when you go to new races too, because you'll encounter a new paddock, new lighting and a whole new feel to the environment. The idea is to create this kind of atmosphere so you feel like you are moving around the world, rather than simply going from race A to race B. I think that comes across quite well.

Have you got a feature in the game that you're really proud of?

I think it would be the technology that is in the game in terms of seasonal upgrades so you're not racing the same car from race one through to another. It's about mixing things up when teams are competing against each other, not only on the track but in the factories trying to improve the quality of the cars.

So when you go to new circuit you're thinking about an upgrade that has been delivered and fitted, and what it will do for your performance.

Game Talk – Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

Feel the Force of Star Wars with David Collins, lead sound designer at LucasArts.

eu.playstation.com travelled to a galaxy far, far away to chat with David Collins, lead sound designer and voice director at LucasArts, to explore the spectacular PlayStation 3 action adventure.

After working on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, what's the most exciting thing about coming back to work on the sequel?

The story is really cool to me. Having the chance to revisit those characters, take them in a new direction and deal with the mystery behind cloning in the Star Wars universe. Cloning has always been a bit of a mysterious subject; can you clone a Jedi, for example? Has it ever been done? Maybe, but not successfully - and what does that mean for Starkiller and his psyche?

It's a much more personal story than the first game, which was about redemption after Starkiller started off as a rebel hunter. In the second game the hunter becomes the hunted and you're a fugitive, running from Darth Vader.

Was it a nice surprise to see such a positive reaction to the first game?

It was - when you work on games you always do your best job, whether it's a huge hit or not... I've worked on games which some people have never even heard of! Everything about The Force Unleashed was a very challenging experience. I remember feeling that if we pulled it off then we could do anything, and would love another shot at it - which we got in the sequel. And watching people's reactions is just fantastic.

Did you feel any pressure in being part of the massive Star Wars franchise?

Absolutely. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and gamer, so putting those two together puts a lot of pressure on because I know what I want to hear and experience as a gamer. The Star Wars games I played when I was a kid inspired me to want to join LucasArts, and once I was there I wanted to do a great job.

There's a lot of pressure when you're working on one of the most famous franchises in the world but you have to love it and we certainly do.

What sort of challenges did you encounter working on the game?

Obviously we wanted to up the ante in a lot of ways in The Force Unleashed II. The first thing we wanted to do was go back and address a lot of the feedback from the first game. We put in a new rendering and graphics system, improved the targeting and camera viewpoint for the player, improved the Artificial Intelligence and, all across the board, we went for a better, more focused experience.

It's really coming together - it looks absolutely gorgeous on PlayStation 3 and we have more experience with the system now to really utilise its power. And it's the same team which created the first game, so we can just go in and fix all these things because we have the experience, and that's the right way to go with a franchise.

What has been your favourite aspect of working on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II?

Besides the story, I'd say getting the chance to revisit the game mechanics, tighten them up and realise the further potential and the concept behind it, which is unleashing the Force. We're reimagining Star Wars in the way we wanted but it's still true to the licence. We've never seen Force powers like we have in The Force Unleashed II.

We have a new power called Jedi Mind Trick, which is ideal when you're up against a lot more enemies seeing as we can get a lot more of them on-screen at the same time now. So when you cast Mind Trick on them, sometimes they'll throw themselves into harm's way or they'll attack each other... it's quite funny.

One of my favourite experiences was doing the audio for one of the trailers. It was so true to the moves you can do in the game, and just watching it on-screen and people's reaction to it during E3 2010 was so satisfying. I loved that, because if I wasn't working on it I would be rabidly consuming it myself!

Is there anything else you want to add about your experience on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II?

I really hope people enjoy it and enjoy where the story goes. We're taking it in an exciting direction and I love these characters. I'd encourage people to experiment with their Force powers as much as they can. There's so much cool stuff you can do in the game, with over 50 different lightsaber combos alone, all sorts of grapple techniques that no one's seen before, and a much tighter and focused experience.

FIFA Interactive World Cup returns for a new season

The world’s biggest online football tournament kicks off on 1 November 2010 with even more opportunity to qualify for the Grand Final.

FIFA, the world's governing body of football, Electronic Arts Inc. and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have confirmed that the new season of the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) – the world's only official FIFA football gaming competition – will kick off on 1 November 2010.

The world's 24 best players will be determined through a series of online and offline qualifiers competing with EA SPORTS FIFA 11 on PlayStation 3. Those players will meet at the FIWC Grand Final to play for the title of FIFA Interactive Player of the Year, a $20,000 cash prize and the money can't buy experience of shaking hands with the world's best players at the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala in Zurich.

Last year's FIWC saw a record number of entrants, with over 775,000 players from around the world competing both online and at local qualifying events for a coveted place in the Grand Final.

For the first time in the tournament's history, the FIWC 2011 will be split into six mini seasons, each lasting 25 days, beginning on the first of every month, from November 2010 through to 25 April 2011. The top two players from each of these seasons will go through to the Grand Final for their chance to be crowned FIFA Interactive Player of the Year.

In addition to the online qualifying seasons, players have the chance to participate in one of ten live qualifier events that will be held around the world. The live event victors will join the winners of the online qualifiers in the Grand Final. Details of these events and their location will be released over the coming weeks at FIFA.com/FIWC.

"We are excited to announce the return of the FIWC," said Matt Bilbey, VP Football, EA SPORTS. "Since the very first FIWC, the tournament has gone from strength to strength and to have over 775,000 entrants last year was a true testament to the status the tournament now enjoys within the football fan community. This year, with EA SPORTS FIFA 11 delivering the most authentic football experience ever created on PS3, we hope to see even more football fans vying for the FIWC crown!"

"The success of the FIFA Interactive World Cup not only shows the passion for EA SPORTS' FIFA games, but also the strength of PlayStation Network," said Darren Carter, vice president, Consumer Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "It is the community that makes this competition so strong and we look forward to bringing new and exciting experiences to the FIFA Interactive World Cup in 2011."

Grab your copy of EA SPORTS FIFA 11 now and prepare to stake your claim for footballing glory on PlayStation 3.

The People vs - ENSLAVED: Odyssey to the West

Star Andy Serkis and Ninja Theory creative director, Tameem Antoniades, answer questions from the PlayStation community about the duo’s latest collaboration on PlayStation 3.

Andy, do you think the gap between working as a voice actor and a physical actor in videogames is closing in on the performances you have to give in the film industry as technology improves? (castaway666, United Kingdom)

AS: I've never considered acting in any medium to be any different because the whole process is understanding a character and knowing how that character works and performs within a story. I think the greatest gap that has really narrowed is the realisation that story is a huge part of gaming and there is no technology to support performances in a very equal, real and engaging way.

What was it like working together again after collaborating on Heavenly Sword? (LordZargus, United Kingdom)

AS: It was fantastic building on the reputation and all the things that we learned from Heavenly Sword. Tameem and I work together very successfully, and I even co-directed the performance capture sequences. I think it's fair to say we have fairly similar tastes in what we aspire to create in the game. So for me it was a joy to get involved again, and I'm hoping it's going to continue because I think there is something very vibrant and dynamic about working this way.

TA: For me it was kind of like having an old friend back. It was very comfortable and it went a lot smoother and quicker this time because we knew what we were doing - not that we didn't know before, it was the first time performance capture had been used in a videogame. It was a pleasure, actually; a lot of fun.

How involved were you in the creation of ENSLAVED, Andy? (Triciptinus, Germany)

AS: Well, it goes back beyond the actual principal photography shoot to story design, character and how those things came together. I was involved in all of that along with Alex Garland, the writer. The big challenge was how to sustain a story which is predominantly about two characters and their relationship. That had to be worked out over a long period of time.

When it came to the shoot we would talk through the scenes, we'd rehearse them, block them and then shoot them. Tameem would watch scenes, give back notes, then I would watch it with him again and often we'd arrive at a take that we agreed on and then move on. It worked really well.

TA: We would swap duties throughout, so when he was on set I would direct and when he was off set we would review stuff or he would direct if he wasn't in the scene. We worked together before so there wasn't any conflict or anything like that; we were all on the same page.

Andy, the three games you have worked on, excluding the movie tie-ins, have all been of the same genre - fantasy and role playing. Is this a coincidence? (RedHeadband, Great Britain)

AS: No, I think the greater allegorical stories really work well in videogames like that. These kinds of characters really work well because you actually get to see more about the human condition through those allegories and metaphors in fantasy and RPG games.

How many different ideas did you knock around before settling on what gamers see today? (Lucreto, Republic of Ireland)

TA: You know, I often wonder how ideas form because there doesn't seem to be any set way. I'd read Journey to the West and in the back of mind I always thought it would make a cool game. We had just finished Heavenly Sword and our art director said he wanted to work on something sci-fi; so all these connections just came together and I think it just grew organically.

It was definitely the fact that we wanted to do a retelling of Journey to the West, but more specifically to focus on the dynamics of character between two people. You don't see that in games because usually the colour spectrum of emotions is quite primary. This is much more like a real relationship; you just don't see that in games. That was what we always wanted to do and not just in story, in gameplay too.

How do you find working on videogames in comparison to working on a movie? Is there much of a difference? (Rainbird01, Norway)

AS: No, there is no difference, you're telling a story and you're playing a character in that story. Obviously as part of a grander canvas we're concentrating on essentially the shoot, which is like a film shoot. That's where my expertise lies, but the other side of it - level design, game design - is separate. My remit is the dramatic side and helping to bring that alive as much as possible. In terms of acting, there really is no difference.

Demo Guide: God of War: Ghost of Sparta

Download the God of War: Ghost of Sparta demo today for a glimpse into the mind-blowing action heading your way on PSP.

With God of War: Ghost of Sparta arriving in November 2010 on PSP, Ready at Dawn Studios has pulled back the curtain on their hugely anticipated game and unveiled a demo on PlayStation Store. Check out this guide to mastering the action available to download for free from PlayStation Store now.

Choose your destiny

The first thing you will need to do is decide whether you want to take the easy route or the hard one by choosing your difficulty setting - Mortal (Easy) or Hero (Normal). If you are an experienced God of War player, then Hero should be your first choice. If you are new to Kratos and his epic tale then why not start out on Mortal and work your way up in preparation for the full game?

Chosen your fate? Now it's time to unleash your fury on the demonic minions that await your arrival in Atlantis.

Controlling the Spartan

Light attacks are performed by pressing the Square button, while heavy ones are mapped to the Triangle button. You can grab enemies and pummel them by pressing the Circle button when up close and personal during brawls.

If you find yourself backed into a corner in the demo (and you will!) Kratos and his enemies will tussle. Here, you have to tap the L button and R button alternatively in quick succession to win the grapple and smash your opponent. You can also block attacks by holding down the L button, and if you manage to time it correctly you can deflect a hit, stunning your enemy for a moment before allowing you to move in for the killer blow.

One of the most powerful moves in your arsenal is the launch attack, executed by holding down the Triangle button. It hurls enemies into the air, which means you can unleash a deadly array of combo attacks and wipe them out before they even hit the ground. However, it doesn't work on some of the larger foes you'll encounter, so be warned, they will require more of a tactical approach.

New moves, new weapons

Kratos has been kitted out with a number of new moves and weaponry including the superb Hyperion Charge, which is performed by holding the L button and pressing the Circle button. The charge allows you to run at an enemy, grapple them to the ground and pound them using a series of light and heavy attacks.

Kratos now possesses the Eye of Atlantis too, a magical weapon you'll find yourself equipped with a little way into the demo. The Eye of Atlantis is an ancient relic that harnesses the power of Atlantis and hurls lightning bolts at your opponents. It's extremely useful for when you encounter creatures that require a slick combination of combo attacks and magic blasts.

Alongside this, you'll also get to wield the Arms of Sparta, which consists of a shield and spear. It's perfect for blocking long-range attacks and can be used to bash enemies when up close. You can also use it as an attacking weapon from a distance by holding down the R button and pressing the Square button.

Say hello to Scylla

Midway through the demo you'll encounter Scylla, a skyscraper sized sea creature with huge tentacles and just one of the many gargantuan beasts in God of War: Ghost of Sparta. The tantalising teaser brawl is just one portion of what promises to be a titanic battle between Scylla and Kratos.

Prepare yourself for the return of the Ghost of Sparta on PSP in November 2010.

Download the demo from PlayStation Store now and unleash your inner Spartan warrior!

Play Like A Pro: Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2

Own the skies like a real jet pilot with these handy tips from the makers of Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2.

1. Easy does it
The planes' turn rates increase along with speed. Slowing down lets you make tighter turns and, if you go into aerial drifts, you’ll be able to change direction pretty much on the spot. Master flying on the edge of stalling and you’ll almost always have the enemy in your sights, ready to get a lock-on and launch your guided missiles or spray some cannon towards those tricky “aces”.

2. Keep the pace
On the other hand, slowing down, especially drifting, will leave you vulnerable to enemy fire. Slow flying means you’re covering very little distance through the air; you’re a sitting duck and enemies will have no problem locking a missile onto you or fine-adjusting their cannon aim. You will be taken out in seconds if you’re not fully aware of the threats around you.

3. Assess the threats
Always look at the radar and the TacMap to know how many enemies are on your tail and how many more are coming towards you. When you’re clearly outnumbered you’ll find yourself constantly evading attacks so sometimes you’ll just have to concentrate on staying alive and attack only when you’re not out in the open too much. It takes some patience and concentration to win against overwhelming odds.

4. Who dares, wins
Of course, you don’t have to always limit yourself to slowly chiselling away at the enemies’ armour. After all, you’re a fighter pilot and your kind is known for taking risks. Get to know your plane and use it to the fullest; for example, try to put just a little distance between yourself and the enemy, quickly turn around and fire everything you’ve got.

5. Stay one step ahead of the enemy
Being a daredevil works especially well if you pay close attention to what the enemy is doing and you can anticipate what response you might get. Study your enemy’s actions and take appropriate measures. For example, don’t waste your missiles if you see a lot of flares pop out; use the cannon or the unguided weapons instead.

6. Different tools for different tasks
Speaking of weapons, try out the entire arsenal at your disposal, as some might be better suited to a specific task than others: Radar Guided Missiles have a very long range while the cluster bombs efficiently take out entire squads of ground troops. Or when you’re swarmed with opponents, try the multi-missiles.

7. Sneak peek
In the heat of the dogfight, when you can’t even tell which way is up, you might not know where exactly the enemy is and, most importantly, where he’s going to be the next second. To help you get a better sense of the battlefield you can use the enemy camera. Press and hold the Triangle button (used to switch targets when pressed briefly) and the camera will remain on the active target no matter what manoeuvres you perform. Get used to at least controlling the plane, if not also attacking, in this view because it gives you a great chance of anticipating your enemy’s moves. The enemy camera also provides a better view of ground targets so you don’t have to dive towards them.

8. Plan ahead for the upgrades
You can get the edge in battle through the perks and upgrades in the Plane Mastery system. Check out what you can unlock in the Pilot Records section and plan ahead which planes, passive abilities and active skills you want. And you should definitely experiment with customizing your weapons to fight according to your style and the enemies you’re up against.

9. Stay informed
Last, but not least, always listen to the mission dialogue. There are some pretty good hints to the best approaches and how you can take advantage of your opponent’s weaknesses, and the strengths of your allies.
