Burn Zombie Burn developer interview

Ollie Barder, Senior Designer of Burn Zombie Burn, talks to eu.playstation.com about bringing the undead to PlayStation Network.

Which movies and games influenced Burn Zombie Burn?

Burn Zombie Burn was influenced by and references a lot of great zombie movies, although we'd like to leave some of the references for players to discover themselves. For example, the Woods level resembles the cabin in Evil Dead and the Military Base hearkens to Day Of The Dead. As for games, each team member's favourites are different but we took a long look at great arena shooters, old and new.

Where did the ideas for the weapons and the enemies come from?

Many of the weapons are classic zombie icons, others reference great movies, and there are a few unique ones we came up with ourselves. The zombies themselves are the products of our quirky sense of humour.

Is the main character influenced by anyone?

Yes - someone who likes to use his boomstick on the undead and thinks that chainsaws are groovy.

Can you explain the role of fire in the game?

Each zombie you set on fire adds to your score multiplier. So if you set large groups of zombies on fire, you can score high. However, there's a risk attached to this; flaming zombies chase you more aggressively and do more damage if they hit you. Staying alive and keeping enough zombies on fire is where the real skill lies. Whether a zombie is on fire or not also determines which items they drop.

Do you have any advice for those players wanting to top the leaderboards?

Kill non-burning zombies for TNT and kill burning zombies to increase the range and type of explosives available. These allow you to kill larger groups of zombies - preferably burning - in one go, which will send your score skyrocketing.

How many zombies can you fit on screen at once?

Approximately 120 at any one time.

What makes a good zombie?

One hungry for brains and ostentatious dance moves.

What's the highest score achieved by the development team?

It's in the region of 230 million but that's only possible on the first challenge; for most of the other levels, it's between 15 and 16 million.

What are the advantages of publishing a game on PlayStation Network?

In terms of the process, we received a lot of help from Sony with the development and publishing processes. The relationship has been a good one; as a developer we're very happy to be exclusive to PSN and to add to the other great titles already available.

Become the Wheelman

Rule the streets as Vin Diesel in this thrilling car chase epic on PS3.

Fans of high-end Hollywood blockbusters movies are in for a treat with Midway and Ubisoft's new joint venture, Wheelman. A pastiche of everything that is great about big budget car chase movies, the game stars Tinsel Town tough guy and action movie star, Vin Diesel of Chronicles Of Riddick and The Fast And The Furious fame as Milo Burik.

A getaway driver of the highest calibre, Milo is pulled out of retirement and sucked into a world of gangs, girls, guns and breakneck car chases through the street of a sun soaked Barcelona where every car is game and the laws of gravity don't apply as you roar through alleyways, office blocks and busy streets with the cops or gangsters on your tail.

Grab the wheel

Taking control of Milo you have a number of spectacular moves at your disposal such as handbraking using the Square button and the left stick or drifting around corners using the L2 button, which is extremely useful if you find yourself being chased and have to turn corners quickly without wanting to lose any speed.

Milo can also slam enemies on either side of him or ram through barriers by flicking the right stick left, right or forwards, plus he has the ability to Airjack enemies by leaping from car to car, which makes for hair-raising chases through the highways and byways of Barcelona.

The more skilled your driving the more Focus power Milo builds up, allowing him to perform special moves such as an Aim Shot, which is a devastating single gunshot through the windshield performed in slow motion that can blow up a rival driver's car in an instant. His last flashiest move is the Cyclone, a 180 degree slo-mo spin and single shot takedown with a pistol, perfect for when you need to downsize the number of chasers on your tail in the game's adrenaline fuelled missions.

Opening with an exhilarating bank robbery, Wheelman's first mission sets the scene of what's to come as you tear through the streets trying to escape from the police and quickly find yourself sucked into a world of crime kingpins. Using your GPS map you can highlight a mission, set a waypoint and drive to the action or just jump straight in, depending on how fast you want to play through the game. Missions include everything from stealing cars, to taking down assassination targets using your death defying car skills, to ferrying people to and from places on the map.

Take a walk

You won't spend all your time behind the wheel of a car, scooter or superbike. There are plenty of on-foot missions to get to grips with as you guide Milo through underground tunnels and streets in shoot-outs and rescue missions. For these Milo can wield an arsenal of weaponry such as pistols, machine guns or explosives, ducking behind objects for cover during more intense firefights - of which there are plenty!

For those that like to explore and push their driving skills to the max, the map is littered with a huge selection of jaw-dropping jumps and ramps that, when successfully manoeuvred, trigger epic cinematic scenes of cars, bikes and Vin Diesel sailing through the air. Plus, by completing all the side missions in the game you unlock weapons caches, garages and tonnes of upgrades for your Focus meter, which allows you to pull of Wheelman's death defying super stunts and special moves.

Fuel injected fun from start to finish, Wheelman is an adrenaline rush blockbuster movie on PS3 that you control with a great story, a huge map, myriad missions and ludicrously enjoyable car chases. If you like the sound of that why not download the demo from PlayStation Store right now and get a taster of Wheelman's breakneck pace.

FIFA 09 Ultimate Team first impressions

Download the free trial version of FIFA 09 Ultimate Team from PlayStation Store today and start building your dream squad.

For those FIFA 09 players used to running riot online with Manchester United and Barcelona, starting a FIFA 09 Ultimate Team campaign is a humbling experience. Taking the random collection of players in your first pack of cards onto the pitch, you'll find a few of the squad are lacking a yard of pace, and, chances are, your strikers will be a little shy in front of goal.

However, great oaks from tiny acorns grow, and the joy of seeing your ramshackle collective grow into a cohesive unit is where much of FIFA 09 Ultimate Team's appeal lies.

Bearing in mind the limitations of this initial allocation, it's likely that your first XI will be picked on individual ability alone. Then, after your first couple of games, you'll have amassed enough in-game coins to buy your first Bronze pack of cards, adding depth to your squad and allowing you to work on the all-important Team Chemistry.

Using players in their preferred positions and within their favourite formation boosts Chemistry, and there are further increases to be had by using players of the same nationality in similar positions. Employ an Italian back-four, for example, and you'll notice far more cohesion on the pitch. Tactically, this means that you might decide to play a weaker squad member if his nationality and preferences suit the way you want to play. It also encourages you to check out the game's trading system for that missing link.

It's easy to search through available cards and the system is flexible, allowing you to bid with coins, unwanted cards of your own or a combination of the two. Putting your own surplus personnel up for trade is just as simple, allowing you set a reserve and informing you of any bids that come in. You don't have to put your spares up for trade though; you can move them straight into your Collection, which is like a sticker album. You'll gain some coins for adding to the Collection, and while it may not be as fruitful as trading in the short term, completing entire teams or other groups of cards unlocks generous bonuses.

You'll also want to keep an eye on each player's contract; each card is tied to you for a certain number of games. Fail to play a contract card and renew the deal, and you risk losing them.

As you play more matches and earn more coins, your squad will turn from Bronze to Silver as you gain stronger cards and train the ones you already have, and you'll feel more equipped to take on one of the tournaments. These come in offline and online varieties and each requires a certain number of skill points to enter, which are earned by playing matches. Tournaments are where the serious coins can be earned, so you might want to save your gameplay cards for the big matches. These can be played during the match and, while they might not always be decisive, they can tilt the balance in your favour at crucial moments. The Keeper Taunt card, for example, adversely affects the opposing goalkeeper temporarily, and its strength varies depending on whether it is Gold, Silver or Bronze.

A trading card game on the surface, there's more depth to FIFA 09 Ultimate Team than first meets the eye. The importance of Team Chemistry makes tracking down strong cards and training up your own a fine art. This is helped by the trading system, which is easy to use and flexible. The tournaments are competitive and varied, and online matches are much more unpredictable as each player is using their own custom team. Opening a new pack of cards is as exciting as it has been for real sticker collectors over the years, with the added thrill of actually taking your dream team onto the pitch to play against others.

The trial version of FIFA 09 Ultimate Team, giving you access to all of its features and allowing you to play five matches, is available now from PlayStation Store, completely free; just bear in mind that you'll need a copy of FIFA 09 on PS3 to play it.

Resistance: Retribution developer interview

John Garvin, Creative Director at Sony Bend, developer of Resistance: Retribution talks Chimera, the game’s hero James Grayson and infecting your PSP with this latest chapter in the revered sci-fi series.

The Resistance series sees the history of mankind change with the rise of the Chimera. Where does Resistance: Retribution sit in the timeline of this alternative history?

Retribution begins in the aftermath of Resistance: Fall of Man. The Chimera have just been defeated in England, and as the nation begins to assess their military they face a new dilemma. A new hero emerged during the Chimeran war, but this soldier is also guilty of military abandonment, and the law considers this treason. In a time of war this means the hero must be executed to send a message to others.

This hero is the game's lead character, James Grayson. Can you give us a little background on him?

Grayson is the last person anyone would expect to save the world, including Grayson. While the British military has been in his blood for generations, James rebelled against the family profession and found a new home and family running with a gang on the streets of London. His new life taught him how to survive by fighting dirty, which prepared him to take on the Chimera. Grayson is a man of his era.

What kinds of locations will battles take place in the game?

The Chimera have been in Europe for two years, transforming the continent for habitation and for their push to invade the rest of the world. The Atlantic coastline has been fortified with hundreds of anti-air gun batteries, each the size of a soccer stadium. The Rhine River has been diverted into a massive conversion facility beneath the ghost town of Bonn, Germany. The countryside has been gouged open by earth movers and turned into a shipyard where massive aircraft are being constructed (the same ships used to invade America in Resistance 2). The few thousand surviving humans have huddled together inside a castle fortress in Luxembourg. The catacombs beneath Paris have been infested with Cloven. In a snow-covered Paris, the Chimera have excavated a tower that dwarves the Eiffel Tower.

What can you tell us about the new enemies that the player will face?

Retribution introduces a line of female Chimera possessing highly evolved telepathic abilities. Players will also encounter the enigmatic Cloven.

What are the main characteristics of these new enemies the Cloven?

Cloven are Russian soldiers who were infected with an early version of the Chimeran virus that infected Nathan Hale. Physically unchanged, the soldiers experienced psychological stresses that eventually drove them insane, and then to grossly disfigure themselves. The Cloven live and fight in small packs, and appear to function as part of a hive mentality. When members of this hive are killed the entire pack becomes less effective and the survivors descend further into madness, turning them into primal, savage fighters.

What sort of new weapons will players get to battle the Chimera with?

We've created a modified version of the Bullseye which we call the BM001 Razor. Its main fire is the same as that of the Bullseye but its alternate fire lets you charge the weapon to shoot out an energy blade that is capable of tracking and killing multiple targets with one shot. Another new weapon is something we created from scratch called the Longbow 1S-1K. This weapon acts like a railgun capable of dispatching multiple targets at once if your aim and weapon is charged up correctly.

Tell us more about Infection mode and PSP Plus mode...

Infection mode, done through Resistance Connect, is a component that offers quite a few things for the player that help add to the overall experience of the game. One feature that gets enabled from infecting your PSP with Resistance 2 on PS3 is the ability to play the game with the DualShock 3 for those truly yearning for a classic dual stick shooter feel. Another feature affects the game from a gameplay and story standpoint by infecting Grayson with the Chimeran virus thus giving him the ability to regenerate health and the ability to access Infected Intel items which provide more insight about the Resistance universe.

What will the experience of eight-player multiplayer be like? How does it work?

The overall experience will be pretty robust given the amount of content we have for a PSP game. The online component of the game supports up to eight players total with four-on-four team games. There are five maps that can be played using one of the five game types including familiar modes such as Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. We also have Containment, which is borrowed from Resistance: Fall Of Man, and Assimilation, which you could say is our take on the ever so popular Zombie mode found in other games like Call Of Duty: World At War.

Our multiplayer component works with both Ad Hoc and Infrastructure gameplay and of course provides community features such as rankings and clan support.

Mark Healey talks about Rag Doll Kung Fu

Before Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic became a PlayStation Network title it was the brainchild of LittleBigPlanet's Creative Director, Mark Healey. Find out his thoughts on the fabulous fighting game.

Before Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic, there was... Rag Doll Kung Fu. Confused? Be confused no longer, young grasshopper. PlayStation Network game Fists of Plastic is based on the original home computer title Rag Doll Kung Fu - a fighting game which was created independently by Mark Healey in 2005 before he joined the ranks of LittleBigPlanet developer, Media Molecule.

Since then, Rag Doll Kung Fu has been passed on to trusted hands of Tarsier Studios to develop the new, fresh out the dojo Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic for PSN. eu.playstation.com went back to the game's roots to chat with Healey about his thoughts on this new version of his original beat 'em up.

How did Rag Doll Kung Fu emerge on PlayStation Network?

I would get a lot of correspondence from various people asking for a console version of Rag Doll Kung Fu, so I put the idea to [the people at] Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, and they were immediately interested. They had recently discovered Tarsier Studios - and they were excited about taking the concept to another level, and making a new game.

Did you ever think your original idea would travel so far when you first came up with the concept of Rag Doll Kung Fu?

Not in the slightest. When I first came up with concept, I never even thought it would even get seen outside my circle of friends! It was just a hobby project I came up with to learn C++. I've been working as an Artist/Designer for many years now - the last time I did any serious coding was using assembler on a Commodore 64 home computer nearly 20 years ago!

Do you think the creation of LittleBigPlanet has impacted or influenced Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic?

Well, there's a Sackboy costume in there, so that's one obvious impact! Maybe Tarsier felt there was a certain quality bar to live up to because of the association with LittleBigPlanet and Media Molecule? Whether this is the case or not you'd have to ask Tarsier really - but it's done a great job of achieving it in my opinion.

What aspects of Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic would you recommend to newcomers?

Well, the having fun with your mates aspect would be top of the list - it's great in multiplayer - and I love the fact that you can actually become very skilful... but it's also much easier to pick up and play than the original. I also love the acting ability you have with the characters - I'm sure some people will have a lot of fun with that and use the video upload feature to make some very funny videos!

Is there anything in the game which changed massively from its original concept and ideas?

Well, the most obvious difference is that this works on a Wireless Controller, and not a mouse like the original game - and this makes it much more accessible. Tarsier has done a great job of taking the spirit of the original, and making a new much improved game from its ingredients. One thing that is missing is the original film footage that I inflicted on people before, but that's probably a good thing!

Are you pleased with the direction that the Tarsier Studios team took with the game?

More than pleased! They've quite simply made a much better game - everything from the graphics to the control mechanism have been taken to the next level.

Do you think PSN allows developers to have more artistic freedom on a whole?

Yes. Smaller teams can afford to take more risks, and generally be more creative. Based on what people have managed using LittleBigPlanet, there are a lot of brilliant people out there who might not otherwise get a chance to show off their creative skills.

LittleBigPlanet expands its wardrobe just for you

Put a little spring in your step with a host of LittleBigPlanet downloads coming to PlayStation Network, including Killzone and Heavenly Sword costumes.

Like a generous gift that keeps on giving, LittleBigPlanet has an abundance of delightful downloads for you to enjoy, direct from PlayStation Network.

In March 2009 a Killzone Mini-pack will become available, containing a host of goodies to bring the shooter series to LittleBigPlanet. Download costumes to make Sackboy look like main protagonist Sev or the Helghast, and enjoy 32 themed stickers.

Also coming in March is the Buzz! costume, celebrating the European release of the latest Buzz! with an outfit of the main man himself.

In the same month there will also be a Heavenly Sword Mini-pack containing costumes for both Kai and Nariko along with 27 Heavenly Sword themed stickers, and the Monkey King costume - the winning design from the costume competition in Asia.

The story of the Patapon continues, picking up where the first game left off as the Patapon tribe have constructed their boat and set sail for new lands. On route their boat is quickly destroyed by a giant sea monster, the Kraken and the Patapon find themselves washed up on the shores of a strange new land inhabited by a tribe called the Karmen.

As their god, your goal is to lead the colourful Patapon through a series of epic battles against the Karmen as well as a series of gigantic monsters. Using the brilliant and engaging gameplay mechanic of attacking and defending to the rhythm of the game that made the original such an engaging experience, Patapon 2 ups the beat for this toe-tapping sequel.

Monsters and music

Controlling the Patapon is simple: utilising a combination of the X, Square, Triangle and Circle buttons on the PSP you tap four-note rhythms in time to the background beat, which in turn tells the tiny Patapon what they have to do in battle. If you don't perform a rhythmic button tapping movement, they won't move and are at risk of perishing from an attack from either the rival tribe or monsters of this strange island, so it's essential that you keep the beat flowing in order to keep your Patapon alive.

Adding even more depth and detail to the experience is The Evolutionary Tree, a new feature which allows you to take three Patapon character types and manage them. The three types, the Yaripon, Tatepon and Yumipon each have their own moves when it comes to both defending and attacking enemies during play, so by building and managing an army that suits your playing strengths, you can create a Patapon tribe that can take on just about any task that lies ahead.

Plus, any Patapon fan who still has their game save from the debut game can import these to Patapon 2, which then allows you to bring across any money, weapons or items, getting you off to a great start with a well equipped army from the outset. There's also another great new addition to the Patapon tribe too, the Heropon.

Drum with friends

These new Patapon are the leaders of your group and have special abilities called Hero Powers that are activated once you have chained four perfect beats in a row. Once you have done this, you trigger special moves such as a boost in your Patapon's defence or attacking abilities.

Another excellent aspect of the game is the fun filled Ad Hoc Mode multiplayer that puts you and three friends in co-operative control of your tribe as you work in tandem to take down enemies while securing tonnes of items, minerals and material that can be used in your single player game. It's great fun for helping each other out and strengthening both you and your friend's Patapon tribes for future battles.

With a whopping 40 levels to master the beat of, there is plenty here to do and with the huge array of new options including The Evolutionary Tree, Heropon characters, hidden items, zany mini-games and the super addictive multiplayer, Patapon 2 packs hour upon hour of funky fun for everyone and anyone who likes to move to the beat of the drum.

Patapon fans can get a taste of the addictive action with The Art Of war mini-game by visiting www.patapon-game.com, where you can immortalise your battles with the colourful Patapon Wallpaper creator, ensuring the legend of your conquests live on forever.

So go on, get your pata-pata-pata - pat-a-pon on!

We Are PlayStation judge Nadav Kander discusses photography

The renowned photographer and We Are Playstation judge speaks about his approach to portraiture and describes what he will be looking for in the winning submission.

You recently photographed the people behind Barack Obama's presidential campaign for the New York Times, how did that come to life?

I have been working with the New York Times for a number of years and once it became fairly certain that Obama was going to win the election, they set the wheels in motion for Obama's People: a collection of photographs of the people that matter to him, and they decided that I was the right person to photograph it. I was thrilled to have been involved in such a historic moment, and it's the first time in the magazine's history that they have devoted an entire issue to one photographer.

There were many exceptional subjects; I knew [Joe] Biden and Hillary Clinton beforehand, but not living in America, there were some that I didn't know, such as the White House Chief of Staff. They really are a very young, positive team; it was inspiring.

How do you feel about the relatively recent rise of digital photography?

I'm still making up my mind, I have to say. There are positive aspects to working with both film and digital. In terms of quality, it's obvious that digital is not as fine as using a 10" x 8" negative or even a 5" x 4" negative, but that aside, there's something magical about working blind with film. You experience the atmosphere of what's in front of you without truly knowing how it is going to look on a flat piece of paper.

With digital, in my case there is always a big screen at the side of the shoot and one positive is that you can edit your pictures as you go along. If I'm doing something on the Yangtze River in China, for example, working digitally allows me to be more concise and prolific because I'm editing throughout the shoot.

I enjoy both methods of working and I'm not completely swayed by either. I spent every other day in a darkroom for 20 years and I believe that experience informs my work to this day, but I wouldn't suggest to a student that they go back to those methods because it is so far from where photography is now and where it is going.

Do you use a lot of post-production or are you more restrained?

It depends what I'm doing and I don't think there should be any rules with art. I don't tend to do anything to my pictures that I wouldn't do in a darkroom, but I can be more accurate with a computer. My work is generally as I intend when I shoot; it's not hugely composed, but each to their own.

What do we mean when we say an image captures the essence of someone or something?

I don't intend to get too ethereal here but I've mentioned the word atmosphere a few times and I think that is what charges any great photograph with beauty. I don't mean beauty in a pretty sense, but in a questioning way, so that when you look at an image it isn't just a breaking wave and a seagull; you feel that there is more going on and that you can sense the mood. For me, the essence of someone or something lies in that atmosphere.

What advice would you give for directing subjects?

With Obama's People, I didn't want to impose my ideas or views on the subjects; I wanted them to be the author of the picture, while I pick up on little things that they do, like picking their nails or standing a certain way; the things that make them different from the person next to them. I wanted to take them out of the context of time and place, put them against a plain background and let them slowly find out how to inhabit and be themselves, or manage themselves without me talking to them.

At other times, it's less about how I interact and more about the lighting; I might want to light the person in a certain way and all I want them to do is stand still so that I can achieve what I'm after. How you direct your subject can be quite different each time and it depends on your intention.

What will you be looking for in the We Are PlayStation winner?

I'll be looking for pictures that are interesting and that ask questions of me, so that I'm wondering what the photographer is trying to do and why, rather than just thinking that it looks pretty. One of the things a great photograph can convey more than a painting is a sense of heightened reality, so I'd like to see submissions that capture both realism and this atmosphere that I have spoken of.

Enjoy some devilish fantasy mayhem in Disgaea 3

Venturing into the Netherworld has never been so much fun. Villainy, carnage and crazed penguins await you in Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice - are you up to the tongue-in-cheek challenge?

Mao isn’t your average genius - and he's going to prove that with your help. As the lead character of strategy role-playing game, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, you step into the trendy trainers of the most honoured student at Evil Academy, a school where the highest marks are awarded to the laziest, rudest and tardiest academics. However, his real goal is a little more effort laden than slacking off at school...

"Truly a super hero… he has 100 dads."

While Mao may be the best at being bad, his aim is to overthrow his father, the school chairman, and assume the title of Overlord. Mao's inspiration in achieving this emerges from some of his favourite manga comics, where he comes to the conclusion that the best way to defeat true evil is to become a hero. Which is where you come in.

Controlling Mao and his selected party of cohorts, you go on an adventure to get the evil genius on his mission, walking through the Academy grounds, buying weapons, items and armour, and engaging in tactical turn-based battles with those who stand in your way, including Number One Delinquent, Raspberyl - a heroine who goes against the school's ethos by being polite, hard working and punctual.

The result is a zany exploit which doesn’t take itself too seriously. Disgaea 3 offers a keen sense of humour and cheerful tone that occasionally addresses players for comedy.

Wait your turn...

Mao's collaborators are a varied bunch in appearance as well as skills. Each character has their own ability class such as Fighter, Healer and Thief, which allows for special abilities in and outside of battle (for example, a Thief can gain the opportunity to steal goods from a shop).

Once in the throes of battle, you'll find yourself on a grid of squares where you are given a turn to move your characters around the map and destroy all the present mission critical enemies. Regardless of whether you decide to move around the grid, attack a foe, cast a spell, defend against potential enemy attacks, lift and remove blocks, claim an item or any other type of action, you effectively use up a turn for that character, meaning good strategy and foresight are key - because once your foes start to attack, you may not get another turn to retaliate if you're ill prepared.

Thankfully, with the guiding hands of Geoffry (Mao's butler) providing tutorials on the basics, Disgaea 3 is accessible to newcomers without alienating those familiar with its workings. There are friendly introductions and help screens for all of the game's main features, as well as some of the more advanced techniques, although much of it can be skipped if you choose.

"Dood!"

There's substantial depth hidden within the cartoony visuals of Disgaea 3, making it a game which will take time to master. It looks flashy with the sheer amount of dramatic zooming, dynamic animation and 3D panning used for battles, while the sheer number of different fighting styles, counter attacks, weapon skills, magic, combinations, team attacks and more makes it involving to play as well.

There are even ways to recruit new students, create clubs, organise class seating arrangements to increase your battle performance and other ways to increase your chance to progress in Mao's quest.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice combines a complex battle system with a whacky storyline and a wild eyed sense of humour for a memorable experience. If you're craving some strategy action, this is the ideal game to quench your tactical thirst.

Lumines Supernova creator interview

Discover the hidden depths of Lumines Supernova with Q Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Tetsuya Mizuguchi. "Sit back, relax and get into the groove. You will be addicted in no time..."

What inspired the visual style of Lumines?

It's difficult to discuss just one component of Lumines, so I may as well explain how this game came to be. The style and image of PSP [the system Lumines originated on] immediately triggered my desire to create a game where you plug your headset in and play anywhere, anytime. When integrating music into gameplay, I was imagining all the various connections between the music and game while holding a Controller, thinking subjectively and objectively, the relationship between call and response, the chemical reaction of pleasant and fun, the process and mechanism that happens within a human body.

After thinking of that for some time, I gradually started to see an idea in the back of my mind. In-between all of this, I continued to travel - which I love to do, not just for sightseeing, but to learn and share the experience of many different cultures and people. My travel experiences helped build the visual style for the game. When you play Lumines, hopefully you're able to feel the chemical reaction happening with the music, background visuals, block colours, sound effects and all other elements that make this game complete.

How did you go about trying to improve the classic and novel gameplay formula of Lumines without sacrificing its appeal or simplicity?

Fortunately, we did not have to make any major adjustments to the gameplay mechanics - it feels and plays just like the original Lumines. The biggest improvement and upgrade to Lumines Supernova is that you can play the game and appreciate the difference of High Definition and 5.1 Surround Sound. We also added two brand new modes: Dig Down mode, where you dig downwards as you erase the blocks, and Sequencer mode, where you can create your own music and play to a customise skin.

In what ways do you feel Lumines Supernova is suited to PSN?

Lumines Supernova fits perfectly to PSN - it fulfils your appetite when you want to play a simple, casual, fun game. Warning: it is addictive! We couldn't be more excited to deliver the same addictive experience shared on PSP to the PLAYSTATION 3 audience - especially in HD and 5.1. Lumines Supernova is the best value package released to date, with over 60 exciting skins in one.

PSN provides an avenue for all types of gamers to find games that are satisfying, but at the same time more compact, pick-up-and-play types that may not necessarily ask for several hours of gameplay at a time. The ability to create and add more content is very attractive - it motivates and helps us come up with various ideas that were not possible before when downloadable platforms were not available. For example, in the case of Lumines Supernova, Dig Down mode includes a ranking system where you can compete your time against other players.

What are the main things in Supernova which you are most proud of?

We created brand new skins for this version of Lumines, but we also came up with two new modes: firstly the Dig Down mode - using the falling blocks, your goal is to erase squares from a playfield already filled with blocks as you dig down to the bottom. You can show off your digging skills as your completion time is ranked based on clearing 20 consecutive stages.

Secondly the Sequencer mode - you can create your own background music using the sound loops provided in the Sound Bank - drums, bass, synthesizer 1, synthesizer 2 and effects each come with 20 different loops. Create your own customised Lumines experience!

How did the LittleBigPlanet skins get introduced to the game?

LBP carries a unique visual style and we wanted to give it a try - to see if the visuals, music, sounds would come together as one, just like the other skins in the game. Surprisingly it did and the folks at Media Molecule seemed to like it as well!

Do you have any tips for beginners?

Sit back, relax and get into the groove. You will be addicted in no time!

What do you think is the next step for Lumines?

Now having seen Lumines on the big screen, and in HD, we would like to see how much further we can push the limits in terms of graphics and game design. A more advanced, evolved Lumines would be our next goal.

Drama at the FIWC UK Qualifier

In front of a lively crowd in London’s Soho, Ryan Hayward booked his place in the 2009 FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) Final in Barcelona.

The crowd packed into Floridita in London's trendy Soho on March 2, 2009 were treated to a football fairytale as rank outsider Ryan Hayward won the FIWC UK Live Qualifier and booked his place in the Grand Final.

"I'm just excited about representing my country in Barcelona and getting to play more FIFA 09," he gasped as he was handed an oversized boarding pass in front of his friends and such football stars as Emmanuel Adebayor, Jack Collison, Jamie O'Hara and Armand Traore.

He then revealed that he had initially been on a reserve list, having lost to Chris Bullard in a preliminary qualifying event, and only knew he would be competing four days before the event. After winning his group he faced Bullard once again, this time beating the 2005 FIWC champion 2-1.

In the group stages, Chris Bullard seemed unstoppable. Playing as France, the professional gamer demolished his three opponents and revealed that he practices for up to 50 hours every week. "The best way to improve at this game is to play against good opposition," he said. "Even if you get beaten ten-nil at first, you'll soon notice an improvement. I sometimes play against Ben Andrews and some of the others guys here via PlayStation Network. I just love football."

One of his early victims was nine-year old Zach Crawford, who also plays for Oxford United in real life. "Well, I am only nine," he shrugged, when asked if he was disappointed to see his Manchester United lose to Bullard's France. "It's only for fun."

As the night progressed, the room warmed as dozens of thumbs flicked frantically across Wireless Controllers in preparation for the knockout stages. Demonstrations from freestyle football champion John Farnworth, martial arts siblings Chloe and Grace Bruce, and human beat machine The Pete Box entertained the crowd between matches.

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor also stepped onto the stage to field questions from BBC Radio 1 DJs Chappers and Dave, pose for pictures with all of the competitors and to play a game of FIFA 09 against English actor and keen Arsenal fan, Joe Swash. He also revealed that teammates Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Samir Nasri are particularly good at FIFA 09.

It was noisy as the two finalists took to the stage. Hayward had overcome another much fancied player, Michael Barrett, while his final opponent, Graham Ellix, destroyed his semi-final foe 7-1.

Playing as Manchester United and France respectively, neither Hayward nor Ellix were reticent in attack, with a clutch of chances emerging for both players in the first thirty minutes. And after Benzema dinked a cute ship over Van der Sar for Ellix's France at the half-hour mark, the floodgates opened and the crowd were treated to a flurry of spectacular goals.

Hayward replied almost instantly, scoring with Michael Carrick, only for Ellix to re-establish the lead seconds later through an exquisite shot from the halfway line by Franck Ribery. However, Hayward came back from a goal behind to lead 3-2 at half-time and, adding another goal on 50 minutes, he finished the match a 4-2 winner. Disappointed but gracious in defeat, Ellix conceded that the best player had won. "He started well and just got better and better," he said.

After the final, everyone partied long into the night and enjoyed a few games of FIFA 09 under considerably less pressure than earlier. The road to the FIFA Interactive World Cup Final in Barcelona is at the feet of Ryan Hayward; he'll need to practice hard if he wants to taste victory again.

LittleBigPlanet scoops a BAFTA

The brains behind LittleBigPlanet talk about the game’s art style after lifting the BAFTA for Artistic Achievement at a glitzy ceremony in London’s Park Lane.

The Media Molecule trophy cabinet welcomed a shiny new addition on March 10, 2009, as LittleBigPlanet added the BAFTA for Artistic Achievement to its many awards. Minutes after collecting the gold statue from Guardian columnist Charlie Brooker at the plush London Hilton, Creative Director Mark Healey and Senior Producer Leo Cubbin spoke to eu.playstation.com about the game's award-winning aesthetic.

How does it feel to win the BAFTA for Artistic Achievement?

Mark Healey: I had secretly hoped we would get the award for artistic achievement because we strove to create something that looked like no other game.
Leo Cubbin: It's also satisfying for us as Sony Computer Entertainment because when Media Molecule first pitched LittleBigPlanet to us three years ago they had no art; they had a technical demo which was very good, but it had none of that visual charm. Mark and Kareem Ettouney, the Art Director, gave a really descriptive explanation of how the game would look and we bought into it. When people pitch games to us, the end product doesn't always live up to how it was described, but LittleBigPlanet is spot-on.
MH: One of our biggest inspirations is children's television and the handcrafted look of things like the Cosgrove Hall cartoons. It has been nice for us to show off the power of PLAYSTATION 3 while at the same time creating something charming and not going down the predictable route of having very realistic brick walls and blood flying everywhere.
LC: A lot of games are great to play but not as fun to watch, but when we first showed LittleBigPlanet at 2007 Games Developer Conference, people were completely taken in by Sackboy and were watching him and his little mannerisms.

Does this award mean that LittleBigPlanet is a work of art?

MH: Absolutely - it's millions of people finding a brand new means of expression.

Which is the most satisfying; awards, positive reviews or strong sales?

LC: I'd say strong sales, not for the money, but because it means people are playing the game.
MH: It's flattering to have critical acclaim but I think that sales are a genuine measure of how much people like something.
LC: There has been a lot of goodwill around this game and we've been lucky to have had all three. And on top of that we've had over half a million levels created by the community - 35,000 levels are uploaded every week.

Which user generated levels do you like from an aesthetic point of view?

MH: There's a level that I played just a few days ago, I think it was called Dark Coaster, which was a rollercoaster in the dark; I loved the way it's creator used lighting.
LC: There are a couple called Anticolour, or something like that, which are very artistic.
MH: Someone recreated Dead Space and put an incredible amount of effort in, really capturing the atmosphere. What excites me most is when people make things completely outside the platforming genre.
LC: I met a guy in America who built vending machines. They don't work, but they look amazing, and it's all achieved using the in-game tools.

The phrase open-ended gameplay has been used to describe LittleBigPlanet, what does this mean?

LC: It sounds like a clich because we have said it so often but with LittleBigPlanet, what you get on the disc is just the beginning. There are 35,000 levels created each week, all completely different to the last 35,000. The community is still doing amazing things with the tools; things that the people who made the game had never thought of. We call it emergent gameplay, and I think Mark and the guys at Media Molecule have hit the nail on the head in terms of that.
MH: I've loved the sense of serendipity; when I'm playing at home I dip in and out of levels at random and I'm seeing what's inside people's minds. It's like a journey into the human consciousness.

FIFA Ultimate Team explained

Matthew Prior, Line Producer of FIFA Ultimate Team, gives the low-down on this exciting new mode for FIFA 09.

FIFA Ultimate Team is a brand new downloadable game mode coming to FIFA 09 on PS3 that lets players assemble their ultimate squad by collecting and trading thousands of cards. It’s Line Producer, Matthew Prior, talks to eu.playstation.com about what it brings to the FIFA universe.

Where did you get the idea for Ultimate Team?
The idea of introducing a piece of downloadable content to FIFA 09 came from us wanting to pioneer in the online space; I’m not saying we’re going to move away from disc-based games, but there is certainly an appetite out there for alternate means of distribution and we want to be at the forefront of that. Providing updates allows us to keep the game fresh in the time between releases.

The Ultimate Team concept itself expands on a mode we first came up with for UEFA Champions League 2006-2007, which we don’t feel realised its potential. Using that as a starting point, we went about creating something that is unique and we hope that the FIFA community will take to. Most of us in the office have fond memories of taking stacks of trading cards and stickers into school and swapping with each other to build our collections, and we think that small aspect of football culture strikes a nostalgic chord with many.

What makes the gameplay unique, aside from collecting and trading cards?
It’s going to add variety to online play because there are over 4,000 player cards to collect; it’s very unlikely that you’ll play online against the same team twice. At present, when you play someone online there’s a good chance you’re going to be facing Manchester United or Barcelona, but because you are at the whim of opening a random pack of cards in Ultimate Team, everyone is going to be playing with their own side that is unique to them.

What else does it bring to the FIFA 09 experience?
To add depth, we have included gameplay cards which can be used to influence the match. They are not all-powerful, so it still comes down to skill vs skill, and you can only take four of them into a match, but they allow for a sideline influence that may or may not affect the result.

For example, a card may increase the speed of a player or the entire team when played, while another influences the referee’s decisions, and different cards affect differing numbers of players and for varying lengths of time. However, once you use one it is gone, so we expect people to go and play a few matches leading up to a big tournament final in order to buy new packs and stack up their collection of powerful gameplay cards.

Are some cards much rarer than others?
Cards come in bronze, silver and gold varieties, depending on their strength, so by their sheer nature, gold cards are rarer than bronze and silver. But when you buy one of the three types of pack, you have an equal chance of getting any of the cards of that colour. We didn’t want to cheat the user by making one particular player harder to get, but within the trading system, some players will be more sought after and therefore harder to get.

How do you expect the community to use the trading feature?
It’s a real wild card, to be honest. We have tuned the economy but it will be fascinating to see how trades unfold. We’ve implemented an auction system where you can put a card up for trade and give it a starting price of the minimum number of coins you will accept and a buy now price, and then you will be notified when someone bids. What will make trades so diverse is that you can offer up to four cards of your own, in-game coins or a combination of the two to tempt the owner of a card you want.

We can estimate what we believe Robinho or Torres to be worth but when it goes live, we’re sure there are going to be surprises, especially when you bear in mind that one player’s gold is another’s garbage. Because of the importance of team chemistry in Ultimate Team – sticking to your manager’s favourite formation, using players of the same nationality in similar positions and many other factors affect this chemistry – you’re going to be willing to pay more if a particular card fits perfectly into your system.

Do you think anyone will manage to collect every card?
That’s another interesting one. It will take a long time because there are so many, but I’m sure there are a hardcore few out there who will be trying their best. The trading system makes it easier, so at least you’re not just at the mercy of opening pack after pack, but you’re talking a serious amount of time to complete the collection.

Is Ultimate Team the final piece of big downloadable content for FIFA 09?
Yes, I believe it is for FIFA 09. There is nothing set in stone at present.

Are you working on ideas for the next title? Bringing back the indoor arena from FIFA ’97, for example, would be a popular inclusion.
A lot of people ask for that, funnily enough. An advantage of downloadable content is that it lets us tailor the game and bring consumers what they want. We do monitor this kind of feedback on the forums and elsewhere. I noticed that EA Sports has released 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, so maybe we could look at a 6 on 6 FIFA version somewhere down the line.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves interview - part two

Continue your adventure into Uncharted 2: Among Thieves with its Creative Director Amy Hennig, Co-President Evan Wells, and Co-Lead Designers Richard Lemarchand and Neil Druckmann.

How has Nathan Drake changed since the first game in terms of personality, abilities and his look?

Evan Wells: There’s no doubt that Drake is in a very different place than where we last left him, as the curtain rises on the story of Uncharted 2. He looks scruffier, rougher around the edges, and down on his luck. In the time that has passed since Drake’s Fortune, Drake has returned to his natural element – a treacherous world of thieves and mercenary fortune hunters. By placing Drake in this setting, it gives us an opportunity to populate the story with a more diverse cast of characters, all of whom reflect different facets of Drake’s personality – this enables us to explore his character in more depth.

What does it mean to be this kind of fortune hunter in the contemporary world? What kind of friends, partners and colleagues would you find yourself surrounded by? We pride ourselves in telling a character driven story, and in Uncharted 2 it’s important for us to be able to explore the complexities and contradictions in Drake’s character. He’s essentially a criminal, but we’ve seen that he’s got an ethical core – and although Drake has his own moral fabric, it’s not clear that all of his friends and colleagues are cut from the same cloth.

Despite being in a radically different place, mentally and physically, Drake still has the personality you’ve come to know him for. Although we’re tackling some more serious themes, and digging deeper into Drake’s character, he’s still the same likeable rogue we introduced in Uncharted. Humour is a critical part of this genre and to the Uncharted franchise – and it’s important to us that our game should never take itself too seriously.

Are there particular rules in the creation and progression of Drake as a character, in terms of dos and don'ts?

Amy Hennig: Well, there aren’t any hard and fast rules, but there are certain touchstones we keep in mind. First and foremost, we want Drake to be a relatable character – he’s not a superhero, he’s a regular guy who gets into scrapes and winds up facing overwhelming odds. What makes him engaging is his resourcefulness and tenacity, but mainly just his humanity – he’s a fallible, flawed human being with both strengths and vulnerabilities. Second, Drake’s wry sense of humour is an important part of his character. Of course when events turn especially dire he gets more serious, but his quirky, ironic humour is part of what sees him through.

What sort of partners and antagonists will Drake will be up against and what has happened to Elena and Sully from the previous game?

Neil Druckmann: The cast of characters in Uncharted 2 is definitely larger and more varied than in the previous game, but we’re not ready to spoil those details just yet– including what may or may not have happened to some of Drake’s close associates – hang in there!

We have revealed that Drake has a new partner and romantic interest in this game – an Australian adventurer named Chloe Frazer. Chloe operates within the seedy and criminal underworld of fortune seekers, just like Drake. These two have a long personal history with an on/off relationship. She’s an experienced fortune hunter herself, and Drake’s equal in every way – but she’s also more impulsive and reckless than he is, which makes her both exciting and a little unpredictable. Chloe is portrayed by Claudia Black, who will be familiar to fans of Stargate: SG-1 and Farscape. She and Nolan North [who voices Drake] have great chemistry, which will be immediately evident when you’ve seen some of our cutscenes. It’s been a blast watching these two riff off of our scripts on stage.

What have been the most challenging elements to convey so far in the game's creation?

EW: One of the most challenging elements to convey about the Uncharted franchise has been the fact that it is much more than a sum of its parts. You can talk about new weapons or new features or technology, but it’s hard to express in words the feeling you get from just experiencing the game. There’s something about the way in which the narrative draws you into the characters and the challenges that they’re facing that separates the game from most of the other action titles out there. We really are trying to tell a more sophisticated and emotionally engaging story than what you’ve traditionally come to expect from a videogame. From the anecdotal feedback that we’ve read on the blogs and in the forums it seems like a lot of people only really appreciate how much this matters after having played the game.

What were some of the film and other non-game influences on Among Thieves compared to Drake's Fortune?

ND: As we’ve mentioned, we want to delve more into Drake’s shadier side and his relationship with the fraternity of criminals he surrounds himself with. Without giving away too much about our plot, I can tell you we’ve gathered a lot of crime and heist films. We always make sure that we don’t limit ourselves to just modern films – in fact, much of our inspiration come from very character driven classics.

We also got into quite a few Nepalese movies to get a better feel for the region and the culture. These have really inspired some of the locales and characters Drake will come across in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

What sort of additions may you bring to Among Thieves via PSN?

EW: We’re going to be supporting PSN Trophies right out of the gate and we’re going to keep our Medal system first seen in Drake’s Fortune to allow for an even greater number of challenges to achieve. We are planning to have a ton of cheats, skins, concept art, secrets, and videos to unlock as rewards from attaining Medals and Trophies, just like in our first game.

We are also currently planning to add additional features to Uncharted 2 that will extend the gameplay experience and increase replayability. We’ll be unveiling these features closer to the worldwide release of our game in autumn of 2009.

What is your favourite part of the game so far?

ND: With Uncharted 2, we set out to create Naughty Dog’s most engaging cinematic experience yet. My favourite parts of the game are when all of our different technological and creative achievements come together to grab the player not only viscerally, but emotionally as well.

An example of this is our train level. By using object traversal technology, Drake and all Non Player Characters have the ability to jump from car to car, climb in and out of the side windows, and hold gun battles across multiple cars. All the while the train careens and buckles around corners through expansive vistas of a Nepalese countryside. Just the dynamic environment along with our traversal gunplay battles will leave players breathless – you’ve never seen a train fight like this! However, where Uncharted 2 really shines is that you’re not just playing to see the next big event; you’re running and fighting across the train in order to save a character you truly care about. You’re concerned about their outcome, because we’ve taken the time and energy to develop our characters and give them meaningful and complex relationships.

It is only through the combination of a character driven story and dynamic gameplay that we can honestly say a sequence is a cinematic experience.
