FUEL developer interview

FUEL is taking racing games to a whole new environment. The game's Producer, Phil Wright, makes sure you're all tanked up with info for the ride of your life.

Where did the idea for FUEL come from?

The idea was really borne out of the technology. About seven years ago the development team at Asobo were working on the technology that could create this huge world and created a few buggies on early versions of the world to race around for kicks. They were enjoying it so much that a racing game emerged as a natural way to create a really fun game that could exploit this landscape and give a range of racing experiences within it.

The setting, of a world where the accelerated effects of global warming has destroyed the environment, is obviously influenced by a worst-case scenario of real life, but is used in the game to enable us to leverage another way of adding drama and presence to the huge world through dramatic weather effects.

It's been a long journey, but everyone is pleased with the results.

How is the game different to other titles in this genre?

It's unashamedly an arcade racer, but it breaks free from many of the usual expectations of arcade titles - things like a small numbers of vehicles, or closed circuit racing, for example. Instead we put the player in this vast expanse, with race tracks cleverly using the natural terrain to create thrilling driving moments, and then offer huge diversity with our 70+ vehicles.

We've also tried to make the game as broadly accessible to as many different types of player as possible, meaning that if you want to drive from one area to the next in order to access career races and challenges you can absolutely do that, but there's always the choice to just use the menus to quickly access areas and races you've unlocked. Free riding around the FUEL world is also a pretty unique experience - no other racing title offers such beautiful views backed up by a 40km draw distance.

One of our catchphrases for FUEL is "What you see is where you get", so if you see a snowy peak in the far distance, you can be sure that you will reach it if you keep driving. Then when you consider the possibilities our race editor brings to the genre... it's entirely possible that the best races in the game are yet to be discovered by the gaming community, which is a brilliant prospect.

How did you set about creating the huge world the game takes place in?

America seemed a natural starting point because of the huge diversity - it has such inspiring landscapes from the Grand Canyon, Utah salt plains, Mount Rainier and so on. To build the world, we selected what we thought were the real standout areas, environments that would add most to the gameplay experience and used satellite data as a basis to create the game world.

The game runs on a proprietary engine, built from scratch, which is able to use the selected data to generate this world on the fly using procedural generation based on these designs. It's a totally different approach to development than you normally see in a racing game, and as a consequence that gives us unique gameplay experiences - there are no unnatural barriers or no corridors, and that gives players total freedom to explore, take their own routes and a huge world to create their own races in.

What research did you do into the diverse terrains and extreme weather conditions contained in the game?

To get a real sense of what the terrain is like in the areas we use in FUEL, some of the development team went on a road trip to Wyoming, travelling hundreds of miles through vast wilderness gathering video footage and photographs, really soaking up what it meant to be in such harsh environments. The resulting environment in FUEL is a conglomeration of the more spectacular natural scenery from all of this data, a sort of best of the North American landscape.

What types of vehicles will players have at their disposal and which are your favourites?

Vehicles in FUEL are split into six groups: Bikes, Quads, Buggies, Cars, Trucks and Specials. Within these groups are offerings which have different performance attributes, so for example you might have a car which is sleek and sporty which is great on tarmac but handles like a dog off road, then another which is more like a muscle car which loves tearing up dirt roads as you drift it around corners. The same is true for all vehicle classes; some vehicles are best for off-road, some for tarmac, some a mixture of both. My personal favourites are a bike called the Shuriken and our hovercraft. Who wouldn't want to take a spin across a lake?

What are some of the challenges and obstacles players will encounter when playing FUEL?

Some of the tracks you'll race around have traditional obstacles such as concrete crash barriers, but FUEL offers more natural challenges to the player, such as streams and riverbeds, abandoned machinery, steep slopes, dense pockets of trees, rocky outcrops, and so on. Any combination of these can conspire to make racing through FUEL a real challenge. And then there's the weather...

What online features will the game have?

FUEL has a really strong online offering, with up to 16 players supported. There's the option to compete in the offline Career races, or free ride around the world with friends and strangers. Then we have our custom race editor, a simple but powerful feature which enables you to create any kind of race you want anywhere in the FUEL world, then host those races online.

Custom races can be anything up to 150km distance and be set as A to B, checkpoint or circuit races just by setting down a start point, finish point and up to 30 checkpoints in-between. These can be tweaked and adjusted at any time by the player and their custom tracks tested offline before unleashing them on the community. We think the race editor is one of the game's strongest features and offers enormous potential for people to keep playing FUEL and enjoy new experiences far into the future.

PSP Essentials: Killzone: Liberation

Continue the battle against the Helghan forces in this white-knuckle shooter.

Killzone: Liberation, the all-out action packed second instalment in the Killzone series, has been developed specially for PSP and features a brand new third-person camera system perfect for action on the move.

The pulse-pounding story follows the conclusion of events in the first Killzone, with the battle against the Helghast still raging on between the ISA and Helghan forces. In Southern Vekta, the rules of war have been cast aside with the Helghast General, Metrac, employing brutal measures in order to seize the initiative and crush your forces.

Returning to the front lines as the battle hardened soldier, Templar, your mission is to undertake a covert operation to save hostages captured by Metrac, whilst ISA troops continue the fight for liberation at the hands of the twisted Helghan forces.

Have you got what it takes to make it through the Killzone?

Best Bit:
The addition of a heavy duty rocket launcher and a searing hot flamethrower thanks to a downloadable pack cranked the action levels up to new heights. No Helghan troop is safe.

What you said:
"Intelligent A.I., offline/online multiplayer, extra challenges and DLC make this one offensive you won't soon forget." (ImperatorA3, Netherlands)

PSP Essentials: LocoRoco

Bounce, roll, tilt and eat your way to glory in the land of the LocoRoco.

The peaceful world of the LocoRoco is under attack by the not-so-nice Moja Corps. These evil outer space critters have come to take the LocoRoco from their land of colour, lively creatures and pastel scenery and it's your job to save them.

On the planet where the LocoRoco inhabit, you must move them through more than 40 levels of slippery slopes, teetering platforms and mind-bending maze-like passages. Thankfully, the LocoRoco have the uncanny ability to fluidly morph to their landscape. You can stay round to roll, become slim to squeeze through narrow passages, and disassemble into smaller LocoRoco to pass collectively through small crevasses and paths.

So all you need to do to win is to tilt, roll and bounce these happy blob-like creatures to safety.

Best Bit:
Stuffing your LocoRoco's belly to increase the size and quantity of them to gain access to the myriad of secret areas and hidden rewards littered throughout this charming and inventive game.

What you said:
"That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for PSP. A new way of gaming: simple, original, full of colour and freshness." (existenzES, Spain)

"Best proof that 2D games are not boring at all. Cute animations and characters make it a great title." (Louker, Germany)

Trine composer interview

Sound designer and music composer Ari Pulkkinen discusses the soundtrack he composed and performed for the exciting title coming to PlayStation Network.

Ari Pulkkinen is a Finnish musician famous for his outstanding work on many games, including Super Stardust HD and the upcoming game Trine. Ari made his first full composition at the age of 11 and he has been composing music ever since.

Ari is currently putting his finishing touches on Trine for developer Frozenbyte, to be released in the summer of 2009. He is also working on other upcoming major Finnish titles.

What kind of instruments are used on the soundtrack? Are they electronic or real instruments?
Trine’s soundtrack is purely acoustic meaning that there are no synthesizers involved. It’s a mix of virtual instruments and real, played and recorded instruments. Some of the many instruments include celeste, piano, harp, guitar, harpsichord, violin, cello, music box, French horn, pizzicato strings, choir, percussion, contrabass and more.

Have you composed all the songs alone? What software do you use, and do you play all the real instruments yourself?
I have composed and performed all the songs by myself. I'm using Logic Studio for the compositions. All the original instruments were played by myself on a midi keyboard, and some of the real instruments were played by other musicians.

How many songs are in Trine?
There are a total of 19 tracks, including the main theme and the trailer version of it. All in all there’s over an hour of original music in Trine, and each level has its own unique theme!

What have been your influences?
I draw a lot of inspiration from Finnish & Slavic folk music. On the entertainment side, recently I have listened to the Tudors, Conan the Barbarian and Danny Elfman’s Corpse Bride original soundtracks.

How would you describe the Trine soundtrack?
The Trine soundtrack captures the offbeat spirit of the magical fantasy adventure that the characters embark on in their quest to save the kingdom from evil. Each score of the soundtrack is like a chapter from a storybook, a little piece of the fairy tale. The telling is strengthened by combining folk and chamber music with different orchestral instruments. My objective with the Trine soundtrack was to make something different and unique that would really capture the game’s story, with its little twisted and humorous turns.

Is the Trine soundtrack going to be available for purchase?
Yes! The Trine soundtrack is coming on sale on my new site at www.aritunes.com as a downloadable album at the same time as the game is released.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m spreading my wings! I’ve set up my own company AriTunes and I’m working on a couple of very interesting projects. Frozenbyte’s got some exciting stuff coming in 2010 and there’s also a couple of other Finnish companies working on some really great projects. I can’t reveal much yet but stay tuned!

Ghostbusters first impressions

Take a look at how you’ll be rounding up ghouls when Ghostbusters The Video Game comes to PLAYSTATION 3 in June 2009.

In 1984, the original Ghostbusters movie was an instant phenomenon, spawning two cartoon series, comic books, lots of merchandise and the inevitable sequel. However, despite the popularity of Ghostbusters II and almost two decades of speculation, the original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson never reunited for a third adventure... until now.

Ghostbusters The Video Game on PLAYSTATION 3 features the voices and likeness of all four original paranormal investigators, and a great deal of effort has gone into recreating the look and sound of those iconic movies.

The voice acting, dialogue, animations and facial expressions of the characters are all incredibly well-realised and really bring them to life. The same loving detail has been applied to the Proton Packs which are the game's main weapon, the fire station that serves as their base and Ecto-1, their car.

Two years after the events of the last movie, the Ghostbusters decide to hire a new recruit after a sudden surge in paranormal activity surrounding a new Gozer exhibition. You control this new team member and the first stage introduces the technique for capturing ghosts that you'll be using a great deal later on.

The game is played from a third-person perspective, as if you're peering over your characters shoulder, much like in the Uncharted games. The R2 button fires a stream from your Proton Pack which can be aimed with the right stick. When a ghost's energy has been sufficiently drained, the stream grabs hold of them and you're able to pull and drag them around. You can place a trap in front of you at any time with the Square button. Your aim is then to guide the ghoul down into the beam of light coming from the trap, which is easier said than done as some enemies are stronger and more stubborn than others.

The next stage takes you to Hotel Sedgwick and shows off the game's destructible environments. One of the funniest aspects of the movies was how the Ghostbusters always left a trail of destruction behind their work, and the game recreates this. Every Proton Pack stream leaves scorch marks across walls and floors, and smashed furniture piles up as you chase ghouls with reckless abandon. Your destruction is even rewarded with cash that can later be used to upgrade equipment.

As paranormal investigators, there's more to the Ghostbusters' work than wrecking hotels and museums, and quite a bit of the game is spent looking for clues using your PKE Meter. Pressing the Triangle button activates it and switches to a first-person viewpoint with three concentric rings and various lights displaying the direction of any unusual signals. Whenever you see a ghost you can switch to the PKE Meter and press the R2 button to scan it. The closer to the middle of the three rings it is at the time, the better the scan, and useful information on each enemy type is progressively unlocked with each scan.

This information, which includes weaknesses to one of the four types of Proton Pack stream that are unlocked as the game progresses, is particularly useful for the end of level bosses, some of which will be familiar. Dangling from the roof of a skyscraper and keeping the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man at bay as he climbs towards you is a particular highlight.

Much of Ghostbusters The Video Game's likeability is inherited from its cult movie predecessors, and its attention to detail will impress the keenest of fans. Not only is capturing ghosts unique and great fun in terms of gameplay, it is in keeping with what happened in the movies and the destructible levels add to the sense of chaos that added so much to their humour.

They're back to save the world... and it's as if they'd never left.

Grannec claims FIFA Interactive World Cup prize

The Frenchman keeps his cool in sunny Barcelona to lift the trophy.

Bruce Grannec of France confirmed that he is the world’s greatest EA SPORTS FIFA 09 player on May 2, 2009 in Barcelona; he will now stand alongside the real game’s elite at the 2010 FIFA World Player Gala.

The late afternoon sun was dipping behind the stage as he collected his trophy, a cheque for USD 20,000 and the key to a KIA Soul car from FIFA Executive Committee Member Chuck Blazer and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Marketing Manager Kerry Lee.

His 31 friends and rivals, including beaten finalist Ruben Morales Zerecero and third placed Francisco Cruz, who impressed everyone at just 14 years old, applauded him throughout the ceremony. The spirit of the day as a whole was one of friendly rivalry, as players from around the world, many of whom only know each other throughout PlayStation Network, came together to play in front of a big crowd.

A close contest seemed likely long before a button had been pressed as 2008 and 2006 winners, Alfonso Ramos Cuevas and Chris Bullard, were drawn together in the first round. Bullard described his pool as a proverbial group of death, especially given the likelihood of meeting 2006 champ Andries Smit should he progress.

The Englishman escaped the group, helping to eliminate the title holder in the progress, but lost to the eventual winner in the quarter-finals. Grannec went on to face Radim Kluka, who had come through a thrilling match against Danny Taylor, which was played on a big screen in front of a swelling crowd and settled with a penalty shoot-out.

Mexico’s Ruben Morales Zerecero defeated young Francisco Cruz 3-0 in the other semi-final, and made no secret of his elation as he roared to the crowd, made up of fellow players, their friends and families, freestylers who had been performing throughout the day, and passers-by enjoying the splendid Catalan weather.

While the FIFA 09 action came thick and fast all afternoon, there was plenty more to see and do. Anyone could show their skills on FIFA 09 in the gaming lounge, while the Entertainment Room proved popular, which housed LittleBigPlanet, SingStar, Flower and many other PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP games.

FIFA’s beach soccer player of 2008, Ramiro Amarelle, stepped onto a specially built pitch of sand to give demonstrations and coaching to spectators and a speed detector let them measure their shots.

The main stage hosted freestyle football performances from Komball and John Farnworth as well as live music and DJs, but the main showpiece was the final, which like both semi-finals before it, was contested between Manchester United and Manchester United.

There was a nervy feel to the start of the game as the players searched for a breakthrough, and Grannec struck first after seven minutes. Zerecero fought back and scored an equaliser in the second half, only for Grannec to seal victory with a crippling brace within five minutes.

The award ceremony brought an end to the competition; all that was left was for everyone involved to party long into the night as a salsa band took to the stage.

inFamous demo survival guide

Find out how to survive the mean streets of the quarantined Empire City, with a look at the inFamous demo, exclusive to PlayStation Network.

inFamous gives you the chance to play with superpowers around the massive environment of Empire City, with high vaulting, death defying acrobatics and sizzling electricity based abilities at your command. Stepping into the shoes of misunderstood protagonist Cole MacGrath, the question is do you want to use your powers for good... or evil? The choice is yours in a number of moral dilemmas that will test your ethics. Do you want to be famous or inFamous?

Regardless of what you choose, you better prepare yourself with a few handy tips - otherwise the dangers of Empire City may not leave you with any choice at all...

Taken from the notes of Zeke Dunbar

Hey Cole!

Listen, I know you're busy trying to get a handle on those freak-show powers and all that hoo-ha, but your ole buddy Zeke's been busy cookin' up ways to make things a little easier on you. Not sayin' you need to pull on some tights or anythin' like that (although I still have the designs), but the Reapers are like giant multiplying roaches. With guns. They're everywhere, man.

So, being the resident expert on these things, I thought I'd lend a hand to make sure your shaven lil' head stays attached to your shoulders. And I'll be right by your side... as soon as I find a replacement for the gun you accidently blew up with your electric ju-ju.

Empire City: playground to the fearless
We've had some good times around the fair old lady Empire, Cole. But the whole disaster has left her more messed up than an abandoned bride on her weddin' day (before the church she was in exploded).

My point is, Empire City ain't what she used to be, and you gotta do what you can to survive. Gettin' to rooftops, hangin' off lampposts and clamber up buildings is all second nature to you, so don't neglect it just because you're all happy-zappy now.

Make sure you take cover behind shelters and stuff. Those surroundings can keep you safe, so be like those fellas in black (that's ninjas, not those damn G-Men that secretly run the world) and use everything defensively and offensively.

No need to be too careful about property damage - city's a mess anyway. A few more broken bottles won't make much difference until we get rid of the people that're grindin' this place into the ground. That said...

A little can go a long way
There ain't no easy way to say this, so I'm just gonna get it out there-- try not to fry every living thing you come across. People around here are a little tender, and they could do without bein' turned extra crispy, if you catch my meaning. Maybe you should stun the bad guys and then close in and finish them off. Or blast their sorry behinds into the air and zap the heck outta of 'em while they're floatin' around. Combos, man! Combos!

...then again, who am I to tell you what to do? They're your powers, right? Just try not to hit me with your mojo, all right? I got enough problems without getting fried.

Take the high ground
Now we both know I ain't what you'd call an expert tactician. (Or is it strategist?) Anyhow, beings how you can climb buildings and those Reaper clowns can't, I say you skedaddle on up and attack from the high ground. Maybe even do that thing where you turn yourself into a human bomb, the Thunder Drop. That's somethin' I can get behind.

"Just keep swimmin', just keep swimmin'"
Ha! How's that for a joke? I know you and water get on like vampires and sunlight. But the moral here is: don't stop to smell the roses. Keep moving, be on the lookout for cover. Damn Reapers don't stand still for nobody, and I've seen those idiots toting around grenades and rocket launchers. Let me put it this way -- grenade goes boom, you go splat. See what I'm gettin' at?

Know where you're going in life
That handy dandy GPS radar sure is a lifesaver. Tells you where the bad guys are hangin', who or what you need to protect, where Moya wants you to go, and even where you can get some of that sweet, sweet high-voltage juice you favor so much. (Not that I'm judgin' -- you do whatever it takes to keep your electric boogaloo dancin'.)

I got your back, brother. And once I can trade some sucker one of my home-made batteries for a new six shooter, I'll be right there with you.

Your pal,

Zeke

Phantasy Star returns on PSP

Experience a journey beyond the stars on in Phantasy Star Portable.

Phantasy Star Portable picks up the exciting Phantasy Star Universe saga immediately before Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus. The infestation of the alien SEED was thought to be under control by the end of Phantasy Star Universe, but a new menace has stricken the Gurhal system. Alongside a new character named Vivienne, players must investigate the contamination and clear out the affected wildlife.

Create a hero

Divided into two sections, Story and Multi mode, you start the game by creating a character to play through the narrative. Here you can choose from a huge array of character creation options such as facial features, shape, eye colour, eyebrows, ears, body colour, clothing, voice type, and even voice pitch. Once you have done this, you set off into this new world to begin your quest by talking to characters dotted throughout the game, taking on quests and exploring dungeon like areas in search of enemies and treasures.

The combat in Phantasy Star Portable unfolds in real time with you having complete control over your character's movements in battle. To make the battles in Phantasy Star a little more manageable during moments where there are a large number of enemies on screen at one time, players can map a selected number of items to the Action Palette, which can be accessed by pressing the Circle button during a confrontation.

Depending on which kind of character you choose to be - a Hunter, Ranger, or Force - there is a vast arsenal of both long and short range weaponry for you to wield including swords, handguns, shotguns, lasers and grenade launchers. For players who like to change their fighting styles back and forth over the course of the story, this aspect offers up plenty of variety on the battlefield.

Battle tactics

To keep things fresh during fights there is a timing related feature incorporated into the battle system. The quicker you get to grips with the timing of each of your hits, the more powerful each subsequent attack becomes alongside your rate of fire should you be wielding a firearm. As you progress through the story, you consistently level up by battling enemies and amassing the hundreds of collectibles and loot littered throughout the huge world.

One of the most addictive and fun ways to do this is to join forces with up to three of your friends and play together in the Ad Hoc Mode, tackling the huge number of missions that become available to you. For fans of the classic PlayStation 2 title, Phantasy Star Universe, Phantasy Star Portable offers up the chance to find out just what exactly happened after that epic story unfolded.

For fans of RPG titles and deep action games, there's a wealth of mysteries to unlock over the course of the story including multiple endings that are affected by the decisions you make over the course of the game. Phantasy Star Portable is one adventure you won't want to miss out on.

Dan Magness smashes freestyle football world record

The freestyle football maestro keeps a ball in the air for 24 hours in London’s Covent Garden.

The cobbled streets of London’s Covent Garden have seen many street performers over the years, but nothing like Dan Magness. The freestyle footballer from Milton Keynes, England, juggled a football with his feet and head for a staggering 24 hours, destroying Martinho Eduardo Orige of Brazil’s previous world record of 19 hours and 30 minutes in the process.

Thousands of well-wishers, shoppers, revellers, photographers and journalists arrived to witness the feat, which Magness attempted to promote PlayStation Freestylers – a competition where boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 16 can submit videos of their best tricks for the chance to go to the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final in Rome.

He, along with Arsenal winger Aaron Ramsey and former Liverpool central defender John Scales, will judge the finalists, and he had sound advice for any entrants. “Practice, practice, practice is all I can say, really,” he said, before climbing into the glass cube where his challenge took place. “And don’t get too disheartened if you see someone else who is better than you. Work on your own style – originality is very important.

“To prepare for this I’ve put in a lot of practice and plenty of running. Staying awake and maintaining focus is going to be the biggest challenge.”

Scales, on hand to support Magness, agreed. “Mental fatigue is going to be the biggest obstacle for Dan,” he said. “Physical endurance is obviously a factor, but he has trained for that and I think he can cope with it, but one slip means it’s all over and that’s a lot of pressure.”

“The longest I’d be able to manage is 30 seconds… maybe five minutes if I trained. It’s a hell of a challenge and I’m full of admiration.

“The idea of PlayStation Freestylers,” he added, “is to get kids playing with a ball and working on their technique.

“We’re looking for originality; people love to see freestylers pushing the boundaries and trying different things, and we want to see people enjoying themselves and having a go. It’s all about building a community where people can submit their clips, learn from each other and, above all, have fun.”

Fortunately, you don’t have to keep a ball up for 24 hours to enter PlayStation Freestylers; just submit an unedited video, between 1:45 minutes and 2:15 minutes, of your best tricks and flicks to youtube.com/psfreestylers.

And congratulations to Dan Magness for an amazing achievement.

inFamous developer interview

"We’re super proud of the results," says Bruce Oberg, Sucker Punch Co-founder and Programming Lead for epic action adventure, inFamous. Find out why...

How difficult was it to get the original idea of inFamous off the ground and into development?

We hit the ground running. The initial concept was "what would it really be like to get super powers and become a hero (or anti-hero)?" That drove our initial pitch and our initial gameplay experiments. We quickly found that electrical powers were super fun and crazy beautiful. After that, we had a ton of development work to do, both building a streaming world and creating a climbable city.

What film and comic book influences have played a part in the creation of inFamous?

We're huge film and comic book fans. We hoped to echo some of the feelings from films like Batman Begins and District B13. And in the graphic novel space, there are a ton of books that we love... DMZ, The Dark Knight Returns, Channel Zero and Shooting War all flavoured our thinking when making inFamous.

What are the most important elements to portray in the open world of inFamous?

Empire City is an urban climbing playground in inFamous. Nearly everything in the city can be scaled and traversed by Cole. Learning the city's ins and outs is super fun and helps a ton in many of the missions and challenges.

Also, everything in Empire City reacts to the choices the player makes. Suppose you destroy a guy's car in a battle with some enemies. He's going to remember that and he might not help you later on when you need it.

What new elements does inFamous bring to the open world action adventure genre?

The urban climbing in inFamous is spectacular. You can go anywhere you can see, and there are no loading screens. It's truly an open world sandbox.

On top of this open world, we've built a series of story missions that unfold to reveal how and why Cole got his powers, and who's behind the gangs that have taken over the city. Add in over a 100 side missions, and you end up with a huge variety of things to do and places to explore.

What features and ideas did you have for the game that had to be changed or removed in the end?

In one of our focus tests, a player suggested that it would be fun to grind on the rails of the elevated trains. This turned out to be super fun and fit in with Cole's electricity powers, so we added it to the game during the final month of development!

What were the most challenging aspects of inFamous?

We had a ton of challenges in making inFamous. We'd never made a streaming, open world before. We'd never done realistic rendering before. We hadn't written anything for PLAYSTATION 3. It was a ton of work, but we're super proud of the results. Our team worked very hard for three and half years and you can really see it in the game.

What kind of gameplay experience would you like the players to come away with when playing the game?

We want players to feel what it would be like to be an everyday person who gained super powers. Would you use them to help people? Or for your own personal gain? Those choices, and how they would unfold in a distressed urban environment, are what we want players to experience. Cole's electrical powers are crazy cool and how he uses them feeds directly into the gameplay.

All your actions feed into Cole's good or evil karma, and your karmic state in turn changes how the game plays and how the world reacts to you. If you have good karma, citizens might help you out. If you're evil, they'll probably run away screaming.

What are you most proud of in inFamous?

I'm very proud of how fun the game is. With too many games, you can see the nugget of a good idea that turns out not being very fun. Our team was able to really make the entire inFamous experience fun from beginning to end. It's harder to make things fun that you'd think, and our people really nailed it this time.

They’re here to save the world… on PS3 and PS2.

PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation 2 owners get to strap on their unlicensed nuclear accelerators on June 19, 2009.

They’re back! Twenty years after their last big screen appearance in Ghostbusters II, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson are reunited in Ghostbusters: The Videogame for PS3 and PS2 on June 19, 2009, and PSP later this year.

The game features a Career mode where you control a new recruit in a brand new story penned by the writers of the original films, Aykroyd and Ramis, in which everyone’s favourite paranormal investigators check out a spate of disturbances surrounding a new Gozer exhibition.

Rip up destructible environments with your Proton Pack to catch familiar enemies, such as Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, and search for secrets and clues using your PKE meter.

Ghostbusters: The Videogame also features four player online co-op, letting you and three others control the original quartet on maps specifically designed for the mode - expect simulateneous cries of “don’t cross the streams” across the globe.

Be the first to play Ghostbusters when it comes to PS3 and PS2 on June 19, 2009 and look out for the PSP version later in the year. You can also whet your appetite with the first High Definition release of the classic original movie on Blu-ray Disc.

Surviving the streets in Need For Speed

Become the best there is behind the wheel in Need For Speed: ProStreet and Need For Speed: Most Wanted 5.1.0 on PSP.

The Need For Speed series of games are synonymous with fast paced, breakneck races that throw you right into the heat of a street battle behind the wheel, opposing cars hot on your tail as you try and make it across the finish line in that coveted first place position.

As with any racing game the goal is simple: win, and here are a number of things to remember before revving engine and taking to the streets, the first of which is whether or not you're going to drive manual transmission or automatic.

If you are a seasoned racing game player then manual transmission is the best option to choose from, but also requires you think a lot more during competitions as you constantly shift up and down a gear when cornering, speeding up and slowing down. For players who prefer to master their car and the tracks (of which there are a huge selection in the Need For Speed series on PSP) at first, automatic transmission remains the best choice.

Cop or criminal?

During races you have to watch out for your opponent who wants to beat you to the prize, as well as other, arguably more dangerous, obstacles in your way: cops. To escape their road wrath you'll have to move fast, dodge traffic and stay one step ahead of them at all times. To make sure they don't catch up with you at all is essential so you need to keep upgrading and modifying your car the more money you gain and the more kit you unlock through winning races. For those with who like the turn the tables, taking on the role of the cop opens up a whole new world of takedown possibilities as you hunt the most wanted street racers out there.

Tuning your car is an integral part of the Need For Speed process. Here you can adjust traction control, gear ratios, add spoilers, NOS (Nitrous Oxide) or any other number of parts to enhance your car on the track and on the streets. Of course, one of the most important decisions you make as a racer in Need For Speed is the type of car that you choose to race. Be them exotic cars, muscle, tuners or special vehicles, whatever you choose to get behind the wheel of you'll need to master it quickly if you are to survive the streets in Need For Speed.

Wrecked

When you spend so much money in-game on kitting out your car the last thing you're going to want to do is wreck it, so when blazing down neon soaked streets or the dusty desert roads of Nevada you need to keep your eyes on the road. One false move could put a hefty dent in your bank balance if you have smashed up your ride in a race for first place. This is where essential skills such as handbraking and drifting come into play. If you can lock these down early on in your career, you should be simply unstoppable behind the wheel of a souped-up car.

It's a fast and furious world out there on the streets of Need For Speed; just remember these essential survival tips and you will be ruling the blacktop, speedways and streets in no time.

Visit PlayStation Store now for full throttle racing action in Need For Speed: ProStreet and Need For Speed: Most Wanted 5.1.0 on PSP.

Trine developer interview

Open yourself up to the magic of Frozenbyte's fantasy action and puzzler, Trine, with this interview with the game's Designer and CEO, Lauri Hyvärinen.

Can you introduce Trine and what the game is about?

Trine is a fantasy action game where the player can create and use physics-based objects to beat hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. The game is set in a world of great castles and strange machinery, where three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil. The core of the game is built around three different characters and their abilities to interact with the game world.

Where did the original idea for Trine come from?

Trine has been a team effort, everyone has pitched in with their ideas. The original idea came from the producer who wanted to create a modern run'n'jump game set in a magical world. Since the beginning, though, Trine has changed a lot in every aspect. It's been a very iterative process - design has inspired artists, who have created fantastic art that in turn has inspired level designers who've created great gameplay - and the cycle starts again. Somewhere in-between, the programmers do some fancy magic of their own and make the game run smoother and have more features. And although there has to be a producer who ultimately makes decisions about what goes into the game and what doesn't, I think it's fair to say that the whole team has given a lot of great ideas to the game.

How long has Trine been in development and what were the main challenges you had to overcome?

While the original pre-production took 14 months and ended in March 2008, we wanted to improve the game and redesigned all the major features in early 2008. Proper production with the whole Frozenbyte team started in late March 2008, so it's been a little over a year now that the game has been in full production. The number of obstacles we've had during development is so great that sometimes it's a wonder that the game has turned out so great - for each accomplished feature we've made at least ten mistakes. We could say that the development process of Trine is a fairy tale of its own, with a bit of magic involved!

Were there any particular fairy tales which inspired the storyline of Trine?

The storyline of Trine has been made with fairy tales in mind but there's no particular tale above others. We have also focused a lot on the general feeling and atmosphere of the game, so that the player could enjoy the evolving story and feel all the beautiful aspects of the game.

Can you expand on each of the characters' abilities?

The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities help the player battle the army of undead and defeat hazardous contraptions. The player can at any time freely choose whoever is best suited for the upcoming challenge or puzzle: the Wizard is able to summon objects to help solve puzzles and create new ways to overcome obstacles, the Thief uses her agility and dead-on accuracy to swiftly surprise the monsters, and the Knight unleashes mayhem and physical destruction wherever he goes.

Can you expand a bit more on the co-operative mode?

We've always been fans of co-operative gaming and we felt it would be perfect addition to Trine. Because there's three characters in the game, that's also the maximum number of players in co-op. The co-op mode allows players to invent super hilarious and inventive solutions to puzzles; for example the Knight can throw a box into the air while other players stand on the box, allowing them to reach high ledges easily. In our test sessions, co-op has proven to be awesome fun, and we expect gamers to have a lot of fun with it too!

What was the inspiration for the art style and music direction?

The art style has been greatly influenced by a general feeling of fairy tales. We wanted to have a lot of colour in the game and our artists have put all their talent behind the game.

For music, the goal was the same - to capture the spirit of the fairy tale-like fantasy adventure, with some twisted moments thrown in. We believe music is one of the greatest ways of bringing emotion into games. Each level of the game has a unique music track, like a chapter from a story book. There is over one hour of original music in the game! We have also used live performances by talented musicians to strengthen the music and sounds in Trine.

How did Trine end up on PlayStation Network?

For us, the most important thing is to make great games. PS3 is a great system that allows us to fully realize our vision. We had no previous experience on developing for PS3 (or even PlayStation 2 for that matter) but we had the game running on PS3 in just five weeks.

We are very excited that Trine is going to be released on PSN, because it's a great service that makes gaming even more accessible. We are strong believers in digital content delivery, because it gives developers more choices and hopefully means better and more innovative and unique games.

What makes Trine the ideal PSN title?

Trine is a game of great passion. The overall look, feel and gaming experience is not just what we developers want to play but what we want every player to experience. The diversity of the game offers a lot of options, and we do not limit the player's creativity - we encourage it! We want players to invent brilliant solutions to the challenges.

We hope they enjoy playing Trine as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Mirrors on Blu-ray Disc

Go behind the scenes of the terrifying new horror film on Blu-ray Disc with star Kiefer Sutherland.

Kiefer Sutherland is a busy man. When he's not shooting back to back episodes of his acclaimed TV series, 24, he has managed to find time to squeeze in a movie. That film, Mirrors, is a big budget, nerve shredding horror remake of the Korean film of the same name that he filmed after shooting finished on Season Six of 24, and wrapped up on the weekends when production on Season Seven kicked into overdrive.

The night watchman

That's a lot of hours behind camera and waiting around on set between takes for just one man, but for Sutherland the reason for this was simple. "I really wanted to work with director Alexandre Aja and do a film in this genre. As an actor your desire is to elicit a response from an audience, and there is no better genre to do that in than this. I get very affected when I see films. I suspend my belief and let the film take me somewhere which makes me very vulnerable for a film like this, so it's a lot easier for me to make the film than to watch it."

Another contributing factor to his decision to pursue the part is that his father, Donald Sutherland, is one of the greatest actors of his generation and has starred in some of the most revered genre pictures of our time. "I think he made one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever made with Don't Look Now by Nicolas Roeg. That to me was an enlightened movie, and one of the scariest films I ever saw. I was way too young when I first saw that, about 16 or 17. But my father has done so many great films. I also thought the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers was fantastic," muses Sutherland on his father's brilliant CV. "My interest in doing a film like this is when you have characters that you are invested in and then the horror elements come in. I felt Alexandre balanced that beautifully in this script for Mirrors."

The plot sees Sutherland take on the role of deeply troubled ex-cop Ben Carson who, after shooting a man in the line of duty, turns to alchohol and loses his family in the process, takes a job as a night watchman in a burned out New York department store whose mirrors have strangely survived the fire. Soon after taking the job, things begin to take a turn for the worse as Ben and his family come under attack from their own menacing and, naturally evil mirror images that lurk behind the glass.

Mirror, mirror

While Sutherland is the main character in the film, the real star is the haunting building that director Aja chose to shoot the film in, lending itself brilliantly to the consistently ominous sense of dread that permeates throughout, keeping you pinned to the edge of your seat as Sutherland explores burnt out corridors and darkened rooms every night of his shift. "We shot the film primarily in Bucharest, Romania. The former Communist leader Ceausescu had built this Academy of Sciences building that was never finished by the time he died in 1989," explains the star of the eerie filming location. "The building was really a testament to his ego so it hasn't been used and there was a sense of abandonment you could really feel. It's a cold war building and you could feel the weight of that and there was a musky quality to it. It was great to shoot in a real building rather than a set, because we could do 360 degree shooting."

Loaded with plenty of seat-jolting moments for both regular film fans and horror hounds alike, Mirrors packs in scare after scare from start to finish, none more terrifying for Sutherland than the first time his character looks in the mirror after the strange happenings begin, seeing a twisted contorted and terrifying vision of his former self. "The first time Ben looked in the mirror made me jump but the oddest thing is I knew it was coming, and I still jumped," jokes the 24 star. "Even just going through the building and waiting for something to happen is scary to me. Believe me, I'm the easiest person to make this movie for."

Working man

Sutherland, who has had a huge career resurgence thanks to his starring role as Jack Bauer in the hit TV show, hasn't stopped working in the past seven years and believes that he is a much better actor for it, shows no signs whatsoever of stopping in the near future. "I love working. The only times I've had to stop is because I couldn't get a job. I wouldn't call myself an artist; I feel more like a carpenter when I go to work. I love acting and creating a character is one of the most exciting things for me. 24 has been one of the greatest educations for me as an actor, because I really started to realize how much I didn't know about the work," explains the 42-year-old screen veteran. "For the first time in my life I have gotten to work for seven years straight, day in and day out. Acting is a muscle and to be able to train like that, making something that people are enjoying, has been an unbelievable gift."

Get ready for a terrifying trip beyond the mirrors in High Definition on PLAYSTATION 3.

Mirrors is released on Blu-ray Disc on 4 May 2009.

Music on PLAYSTATION 3

If you’re a music lover, check out the many ways you can keep your ears happy with PS3.

PLAYSTATION 3 is the world’s most powerful games system, and there’s a lot more to it than that – it’s also a fantastic multimedia player. With Blu-ray Disc and DVD movie playback, PlayTV, the Photo Gallery and a Flash-compatible Internet Browser, all of your entertainment needs are catered for. Here’s a look at how you can use it to enjoy your favourite music.

Building a collection

You can save audio files onto your PS3 system’s hard drive in various formats, including MP3 and WMA. You can also listen to CDs and import them into your collection, which is found under Music on the PS3 Home Menu (XMB), or stream music from your PC and other compatible devices, using the Media Server feature.

It’s easy to browse your music collection once it’s saved to your hard drive. You can sort files by name, artist, genre or date added, and you can create playlists of your favourites or build a soundtrack for a party. For added style, you can choose one of the beautiful Visual Players to appear on your TV as the sounds keep coming, or alternatively, create a Photo Gallery or activate Life With PlayStation and catch up on news and weather from around the world. If you’re having a party, you could even set up a digital camera and play a Slideshow of the evening as it happens while your music plays in the background.

Tunes and games

Certain games, such as WipEout HD, LittleBigPlanet and more, support custom soundtracks, so you can listen to the music saved onto your hard drive while you’re piloting your anti-gravity ship or creating a masterpiece.

If you enjoyed the music from Linger in Shadows, Pain, PixelJunk Eden or PixelJunk Monsters, you can download their soundtracks from PlayStation Store. Movement is also worth checking out; the video series, available for free from PlayStation Store, follows Spencer and Martin as they take a camper van around Europe in search of the hottest unsigned bands.

Videos when you want them

PS3 users will have free access to thousands of free music videos from June 2009, with VidZone. The free application, downloadable from PlayStation Store, lets you watch, pause and rewind all of your favourite videos, and with regular updates, it’s always bang up to date. The videos are of superb quality, and as they are streaming, there’s no waiting around for downloads. You can even create playlists from the huge array of videos.

If listening is too passive for your tastes, then belt out your favourite song with SingStar. The hit series has been livening parties since 2004, and as a result, there are plenty of songs to get your mouth around, whether that’s on one of the Blu-ray Disc releases, a PlayStation 2 DVD, which are compatible with PS3 providing you own a PS3 version of SingStar and the latest software update, or from the SingStore, which now has over 1,000 tracks available for download. Using a PLAYSTATION Eye USB Camera, you can upload your performances to My SingStar Online and singstargame.com, or rate the videos added by the community and leave comments.

For those proficient in air guitar, saucepan drums and broomstick bass, the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games will help you live out your rock and roll fantasies. They come with guitar, bass and drum peripherals, as well as a microphone, so you and your friends can get together and bounce around your living room like The Who.

Whatever your musical persuasion, you’ll find plenty of options on your PS3 system to keep the good vibrations coming. "It's a great way to show off our new downloadable maps and take the players behind the scenes a little bit. Maybe retell some amusing stories about how they were made after release of the disc build. Oh look it's that box from Tharsis Refinery.". - Eric Boltjes, Lead Online Designer

It will be a strategy of divide and conquer; while part of the Killzone team roams around in the servers joining random games, another elite squad of GG soldiers will be setting up games that anyone can hop into and join for a frantic fight for victory in some of the new exclusive maps.

"We are always looking for new and exciting ways to find and kill the people that actually buy our games and when this opportunity came around we simply had to jump at the opportunity." - Seb Downie - Producer

They take a real pleasure in telling us how we failed to properly balanced the game modes, what features we should add to the next patch or how our levels sucks. We love every second of it. Especially the whole "shooting-at-them" part of it." - Simon Larouche, Senior Online Designer

Make sure to visit the official PlayStation forums for more information and to sign up and visit the official Killzone website at killzone.com for more information on Killzone 2.

Cue like a pro in WSC Real 09

Live the highs and lows of a professional snooker season and hone your skills at pool, billiards and more.

WSC Real 09 brings the sights and sounds of a professional snooker season to PLAYSTATION 3, featuring all of the most famous players and tournaments, as well as the option to play pool, billiards and bar billiards.

The Real mode controls allow you to see the table from the eyes of the player as you approach each shot and decide what you want to do with the cue ball. As in the real game, position is everything, and the game’s aiming system helps you put the white where you want it. As you line up your shot using the left stick, a yellow line tells you which direction the object ball (the one you’re going to hit) will travel and a white line displays the trajectory of the cue ball. However, for difficult and important shots the lines are shorter and less helpful.

The third aiming guide is a grey circle showing the predicted resting place of the cue ball. The easier the shot, the smaller and more accurate the grey area, although it assumes you’re not going to hit any other balls on the way, so you’ll have to factor this in when playing for a cannon. Thanks to these guides, it’s relatively simple for anyone who understands snooker to start potting balls and building breaks, but this doesn’t mean the game is easy; just like in the real sport, the top players are ruthless and one mistake can mean you’re sitting down for the rest of the frame.

For newcomers, there’s a comprehensive training mode featuring the game’s commentators, John Virgo, Dennis Taylor and John Parrot, as well as an ongoing coaching option which determines your style of play and offers advice based on it.

For snooker players, there’s a full season to embark on, featuring all ranking tournaments from the professional circuit, realistic venues and the top 32 players in the world. Early in your career, you’ll have to go through qualifying rounds against other rookies before you can take on the big names. As you progress, you’ll earn points with which to improve your created player, press clippings from your greatest moments and endorsements from in-game brands such as Cue T: the fragrance for men.

Pool players can partake in both 8-ball and 9-ball varieties, with the option of playing a full season of the former. You can also play a game of billiards or bar billiards, or take on one of the many trick shots designed to test your mastery of spin, swerve and jump-shots. For the ultimate test of cueing, there’s the Golden Cue: an event designed to test the player across all disciplines. You can also play any of the game types against a human opponent, either online or offline.

For cue sports fans, WSC Real 09 offers a deep recreation of almost every variation fathomable. With all the big names, tournaments and realistic arenas, it captures the feel of a snooker season both on and off the table. The pool, billiard and trick shot options add variety and online play means there’s always a challenge waiting for the best players.

It’s so realistic, you’ll feel like chalking the Wireless Controller.
