The People vs: MotorStorm Apocalypse

Evolution Studios' game director Matt Southern and senior designer Paul Rustchynsky answer questions from the PlayStation Community about their storming new PlayStation 3 title.

What's new in the multiplayer mode? (Westdogg57, France)

We've really gone to town with multiplayer this time around, adding in persistent matchmaking, a new ranking system, 16 player racing, two player split screen online, medals and accolades. But two of the biggest additions are Perks and Betting.

Perks are performance modifiers that allow you to change Handling, Boost and Combat attributes. There are 21 perks in total that are unlocked by progressing through the ranks, and exclusively here is the full list available in the game:

Handling Perks

Burn Rubber - Increased grip.

Swift Return - Halves the time it takes to reset to track after wrecking.

Sunday Driver - Improved brakes.

Flight Control - Increases the amount of in-air control.

Hot Rod - Improved acceleration.

Part Fish - Reduced water drag.

Aerodynamic - Faster top speed.

Boost Perks

Critical - Stay longer in Critical Boost before exploding.

Up and Away - You can hold Accelerate and still gain in-air Boost cooling (at a reduced rate).

Asbestos - The effect of fire on your engine temperature is reduced.

Chilled - Faster Boost cool down rate.

Aquatic - Increases the cooling effect of water on your engine temperature.

Shoot the Breeze - Improves your in-air Boost cooling.

Slow Burn - It takes longer to reach Critical Boost.

Combat Perks

Parting Gift - Creates a shockwave whenever you wreck.

Cheap Shot - Performing a Ram uses less Boost.

Heavy Weight - Your Rams are more effective against other vehicles.

Armour - Take more damage before wrecking.

Immovable - Rams against you are less effective.

Critical Strike - Whilst in Critical you can perform Rams without a Boost penalty.

Explosive - Increases Shockwave range when over-boosting.

Betting gives you the opportunity to win extra chips, that contribute towards your rank, by wagering on other players online. Simply pick a player prior to the race who you think you can beat based upon their current form and overall ranking. If you beat them, you're rewarded with a pot of chips that you can either bank or bet. Banking them adds them immediately to your rank, but betting them means you have to win the next race or you lose them all. If you do win the next bet though you enter a hot streak and the number of chips gets multiplied, allowing you to win big!

Are there going to be different environments like we saw in MotorStorm Pacific Rift? (Schatttensonne, Germany)

The fictional west coast city that we've taken MotorStorm Apocalypse to is much more varied than anything you've seen in MotorStorm Pacific Rift. We don't just race on the streets, we take it to the rooftops of skyscrapers, down into the sewers, onto train tracks and down to the coast along the seafront. It truly is the most diverse location we've taken MotorStorm to yet. Plus there are environmental differences in every race - not just every track. That's 40 unique races.

Will new parts of the game support fully dynamic weather and daylight cycles? (Hetf, Russia)

The Festival, which is the single player campaign, takes place over a period of two days. This chronology is important to emphasise your progression through the story, as it really feels like you're taking part in an intense weekend of racing.

The weather isn't dynamic, but it does have an effect on gameplay. Rain that falls continuously cools down your boost gauge, allowing to you reach crazy speeds. And, of course, on tracks where it is raining the surfaces will be wet so the handling will also be affected.

Are we going to be able to modify vehicles? (XET_DE_PINA, Spain)

Absolutely! You can customise appearance and performance. Using a range of easy tools you'll be able to visually personalise your vehicles to create a unique identity when playing online - the designs automatically work on all 13 vehicle classes. The perks system gives you the power to change the three core elements of gameplay: Handling, Boost and Combat. Intelligent selection of these based on your vehicle, your opponents and the upcoming track will give you the advantage.

How in-depth will vehicle customisation be in terms of visuals? (Crazyrussianak47, UK)

The range of options for customisation is really extensive without ever being difficult to use. You'll be able to swap out parts, like wheels, tail lights and spoilers, that allow you to really shape the vehicle. You can also change the colour of the livery and its paint type, change the vinyl design of that livery and then change the individual colour for all its layers. On top of all that you can place stickers and a race number, and to finish this off why not apply some damage to remove that pristine look?

If customisation isn't your sort of thing, and you just want a quick and unique look, just select Randomise and get immediate results - you can even randomise specific elements within your design.

Will there be a special edition of MotorStorm Apocalypse? (Linkin_999, Portugal)

We don't have a special edition of the game, but by pre-ordering from certain retailers you'll be able to get additional free content such as exclusive vehicles, stickers, XMBTM (XrossMediaBar) dynamic themes and player icons.

Is this the last MotorStorm title or will there be others? (spartako_151, Italy)

Right now we honestly couldn't say, as we're really focused on delivering more MotorStorm Apocalypse content on PlayStation 3. We've got lots of free and paid content in development to be released shortly after launch on PlayStation Store. Hopefully we'll be able go into more detail about this soon but here's a hint - we're heavily inspired by San Francisco, and that includes a rather interesting Rock!

Demo Guide: WWE All Stars

Have you got what it takes to tackle the brutal brawlers in the WWE All Stars demo, available to download for free from PlayStation Store?

Modern-day heroes and legends of yesteryear are preparing to enter the ring and unleash their fierce fighting skills in WWE All Stars on PlayStation 3. Read on to find out how you can become king of the ring.

Who will you choose?

Take your pick from Ultimate Warrior and Rey Mysterio - two wrestling legends, each with their own distinctive style and crippling moves. Choosing between them isn't easy, and it's your first challenge.

The WWE All Stars demo gives you the choice of playing as the huge former world champion, coated in intimidating war paint, or as the tattooed, masked, 2006 Royal Rumble winner. Each of these monstrous fighters is ready to pummel their opponent - who will be your chosen contender and who will stand as your ruthless rival?

Show no mercy

Both Ultimate Warrior and Rey Mysterio have different strengths and abilities. Ultimate Warrior's sheer size and immense strength allow him to pick his opponents up and hurl them through the air with extreme force.

Rey Mysterio can also pack a heavy punch, while his smaller size allows him to move faster and, quite literally, throw his own weight around to attack his competitor.

Make use of each wrestler's Signature Moves, size and strength to tackle your opponent.

Tussle for two

Wrestlers have always dressed to impress and love to put on a show for their fans, so it only makes sense to challenge one of your friends to a match and show off your savage skills. The pair of you can play as Ultimate Warrior and Rey Mysterio and indulge in some furious fighting.

Knockout!

There are two ways to win this Exhibition match - go for the pin or knock out your opponent. Neither of these comes easily, and you'll need to work hard for your win.

Try and wear your opponent down with as many strikes and punches as you can before unleashing a Signature Move to stun them. Once they're on the floor, press the L2 to pin them - but remember they may still have the energy to break free of your hold.

One sure-fire way to stun your opponent is to climb a turnbuckle and launch yourself on top of them - it looks pretty cool, too. If you're going for the knockout, string some big moves together before your opponent can retaliate. They won't know what's hit them.

Download the WWE All Stars demo now from PlayStation Store to your PS3 for free, and step into the ring with a ferocious fighter.

Demo Guide: Mortal Kombat

Beat your friends to the punch in the ferocious Mortal Kombat demo on PlayStation 3, available to download for free from PlayStation Store.

Brutal brawling at its best, Mortal Kombat has returned to pick a fight with players around the world once more. PlayStation Plus subscribers had their chance to play a free demo of the PS3 beat 'em up from 9 March 2011, before a general release a week later. With eye-popping stereoscopic 3D visuals, Mortal Kombat is sure to make an impact, so sharpen up your skills before the game's launch on 21 April 2011. Ready? Round one... fight!

Take on all comers

The teleporting, spear throwing, hellfire breathing Scorpion is easily one of the most popular beat 'em up characters ever created - although it pays to have more than one fighter up your sleeve to be a Mortal Kombat master. Joining Scorpion in the demo are Johnny Cage, Mileena and Sub-Zero.

Explore each character's strengths and weaknesses before settling on at least two which you can use effectively. If you're going to take advantage of the tag battle mode when the game is released you'll need to know how to fight as more than one character so that you can switch your tactics at will, especially against tricky foes.

Mix up your martial arts

Even with four characters to choose from, there's always the temptation to repeatedly dish out every special move you can learn. It's easy to overuse the likes of Mileena's Sai Blast or Sub-Zero's Iceball attack. This will only make you a very predictable fighter.

Instead, think of these moves as a way of extending basic attacks and creating deadly combinations that will drain your opponent's health much more efficiently. For example, Mortal Kombat's creative director Ed Boon has a signature combo for Scorpion consisting of a turn-around jump kick, Teleport and Spear followed by an uppercut for a whopping 25 per cent to 30 per cent damage score. There are some combos listed in the pause menu, so don't be shy about checking them out.

Experimenting with the placement of your special moves is the key to putting your foes to the sword, inevitably ending with the gratifying words: "Finish him!"

One step backward, two steps forward

Getting pounded? Then don't try to button-mash your way out - just back off. Gaining distance and using space effectively is one of the most important things you'll learn in any beat 'em up. By moving or teleporting away from a foe, they lose the momentum of their attack and it gives you breathing space to retaliate. Also be aware of your environment's size. The demo shows off two stages: The Living Forest and The Pit, both of which have a unique Fatality you can perform on the losing fighter. Give them a try for a spicy finish to your fight.

X-rated

The show-stopping X-ray attacks and Fatalities are the special moves everyone has been looking forward to in Mortal Kombat, and they don't disappoint. While the X-ray attacks are easy to perform, it's worth learning when it's best to use them. Some, like Johnny Cage's devastating Ball Buster move, only work as counter-attacks, requiring an enemy to hit you first before they activate. Others require a certain distance for them to work, like some Fatalities.

Remember, all X-ray moves can be avoided or blocked, so while they may look good and inflict amazing damage, it's best to be cautious and use less risky Super Moves if you're low on health.

Download the Mortal Kombat demo for free from PlayStation Store and earn a flawless victory with these tips. And make sure you get all the best demos first by signing up to PlayStation Plus. Find out how to subscribe at eu.playstation.com/playstationplus.

Top Tips: PixelJunk Shooter 2

Play the all new Online Battle mode of PixelJunk Shooter 2 like a pro with these top tips from the game's developer, Q Games.

PixelJunk Shooter 2 on PlayStation 3 has a fierce Online Battle multiplayer mode with surprises lying around every corner. To prepare you for the adrenaline-pumping battles to come, the staff at Q-Games share their top item combinations. You can choose up to three items to help you defeat your opponent and climb the online leaderboard.

Join in the fun by trying out these sure-fire strategies for success today.

Andrew Palmer, artist

Item 1: Proximity Mine
Item 2: Magma Resistance
Item 3: Speed Up

Mines are great for taking your opponent by surprise or for guarding your base, and Magma Resistance is awesome on stages featuring hot lava. Not only does it allow you to quickly escape through areas your enemy cannot enter, it also allows you to grab their token when they die. The Speed Up item is great for speedy flying and can be very useful on stages with open areas, meaning you can quickly grab survivors before your opponent even knows where you are.

Take care, as sometimes you can end up getting killed by your own mine if you are fighting your rival close to it, and Magma Resistance can also run out unexpectedly if you're not careful.

Satoshi Ogino, artist

Item 1: Camouflage
Item 2: Mirage
Item 3: Spread Missile

This stealthy combination of items allows you to hide yourself with the Camouflage item, disguising your ship as an innocent survivor character. While still camouflaged, attacking with the Spread Missiles will fire out a three-way barrage of hurt, so there's no need to worry about precise aiming. Plus, you can use Mirage to create a deadly duplicate and confuse your opponent.

You can easily blow your cover if you're not careful with Camouflage, so watch out.

Rowan Parker, planner

Item 1: Reverse Controls
Item 2: Proximity Mine
Item 3: Tomahawk Missile

Use Reverse Controls to confuse your opponent, and then hit them with Tomahawk Missiles to home in on them for a quick kill. Then you can use Proximity Mines to control the map.

Remember that experienced players can dodge the Proximity Mines, deflect the Tomahawk Missiles and cope with the reversed controls.

Dylan Cuthbert, executive producer and founder of Q-Games

Item 1: Radar
Item 2: Reverse Controls
Item 3: Reflective Missile

This is a really cool combo, as Reflective Missiles are lethal when shot into confined areas and can confuse the other player - even reversing their controls. Fire Reflective Missiles at them to give yourself 15 to 20 seconds of freedom.

Reflective Missiles can damage your ship too, so try not to use them when you are attacking.

Naohiro Kimura, lead planner

Item 1: Camouflage
Item 2: Reverse Controls
Item 3: Anything!

This is the ultimate ambush combo! Use Camouflage in your own or your opponent's base, and, when they come flying by, throw them for a loop by using Reverse Controls. After they've gone into full panic mode, hit them with your best shot. It's an especially effective strategy when all survivor characters are in one base. Beware though; it only works on the same opponent once.

Ariel Angelotti, assistant producer

Item 1: Magma Ball
Item 2: Position Change
Item 3: Resurrection

Magma Balls can be pretty deadly when used effectively, and nothing beats shooting one above your ship right before using the Position Change item to swap places with the enemy. Your opponent will be greeted with loads of magma from above - they won't know wha's hit them. If you have a tendency to die untimely deaths as I do, Resurrection revives your ship in a pinch.

If your opponent has the Fluid Converter item equipped, they can turn your ball of hot liquid death into a mere dousing of water. Plus, magma will deflect off walls, so be careful which direction you fire it in.

Kalin, programmer

Item 1: Camouflage
Item 2: Sticky Ship
Item 3: Footprint

The Sticky Ship, an item which causes your opponent to stick to walls, allows you to kill opponents without the need for other special items, and Footprint is a fantastic tool for tracking them down when they're defending - it definitely keeps the pressure on. Tricking your opponent with the Camouflage item can be fun, too. Catch them by surprise as they bring a survivor into their capture point only to be met with sudden death.

Demo Guide: PlayStation Move Heroes

Step into the action with the PlayStation Move Heroes demo, available to download from PlayStation Store for free.

Six legends – and you – combine to compete in the dastardly Inter-Universal Games in PlayStation Move Heroes for PlayStation 3. Help Ratchet, Clank, Jak, Daxter, Sly and Bentley compete by harnessing the power and precision of PlayStation Move.

The PlayStation Move Heroes demo is exclusively available to PlayStation Plus members from 16 March 2011, before going on general release one week later. Limber up with this guide to the action – ready for starter's orders?

Challenge 1: Survive a Deathbot Uprising

Safe-cracker extraordinaire Sly swaps his trademark cane for the supercharged Thief's Whip to save the Whibbles held captive by a ruthlessly efficient robot army. It's down to you to secure their freedom by using the PlayStation Move motion controller to lash out at the mechanical menaces.

Flick the motion controller sharply to dispatch robots one by one, and hold it over your shoulder to charge up the deliciously devastating Super Strike. Stand up and swing your whole arm to get the best results, so whip crack away with a stinging array of combos to shower your screen in nuts, bolts, sparks and glory.

Challenge 2: Could You Be So Bowled

Skittle diabolical duo Gleeber and Lunk's plans by bowling the Whibbles to safety as intrepid explorer Jak. Use the motion controller to help Jak send a powerful ball spinning through energy hoops and rocketing over vast gaps, as you search this expansive level for caged Whibbles.

Essential to success is spotting speed boosts to ricochet off, helping you smash into Whibbles' cages and netting you a time bonus to ward off the ticking clock. Keep an eye, too, on Jak's Dark Eco meter in the top left corner of the screen. When this is full, hit the L1 button on the navigation controller or wireless controller to saturate your ball with a destructive dark energy that vaporises obstacles.

Challenge 3: Whibble Trouble

As high-flying Lombax mechanic Ratchet, use your trusty Omniwrench to bash legions of roving robots so you can free more Whibbles. This time, you must return the newly liberated creatures to Mama Whibble, who monitors your progress from the safety of her hover chair.

Swing the motion controller up, down, left and right to batter your aggressors. The battling Buccaneer robots are not so willing to be turned into scrap metal and you must draw them into rash attacks by blocking them – just press the Move button. Jump out of the way as they attack by swinging the motion controller to one side, and their unguarded back will be exposed for you to strike at.

Challenge 4: Industrial Revolutions

A breezy game of frisbee this isn't, as Sly's loyal sidekick, Bentley, steps into the spotlight armed with heavy duty flying discs. With caged Whibbles scattered to every corner of the level, guide each disc between buildings and around obstructions, being careful to nab vital replenishments along the way. It's all too easy to run out of discs as you get used to manoeuvring them, so be sure to stock up.

Watch out for the green speed hoops – gliding through these catapults you into the air, and you can scoop up two or three Whibbles in one flight.

Challenge 5: A Mine Of Their Own

Clank, Ratchet's ingenious companion, must round up Whibbles scattered across a clutch of sky islands. Aim the motion controller at the screen to blast enemy contraptions into tiny pieces, clearing the way for you to sweep in and rescue the stricken aliens.

While PlayStation Move lets you pick off attackers at will, presenting yourself as a moving target will help you stay in the hunt long enough to rescue every last Whibble.

In the starting blocks and ready to go? Then download the free PlayStation Move Heroes demo to your PS3 from PlayStation Store and sample an unforgettable adventure.

The lights go down and the volume rises as you approach the ring. You are Andre Bishop, heavyweight boxing pretender in Fight Night Champion for PlayStation 3, and awaiting you is IBF, WBO and WBC heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. The Ukranian giant they call Dr Steelhammer is a fearsome opponent, but luckily you have EA Canada producer Mike Mahar in your corner to dispense essential advice that'll give you more than a fighting chance...

Get in shape

There are thousands of ways to play Fight Night Champion, just as there are thousands of unique styles in boxing. This may sound obvious, but a major key to success is being fully aware and capable of throwing the punch you want, when you want.

One trick to improve your punching ability is to visit our Training Games via the Main Menu and participate in the Heavy Bag Combo training challenge.

The Heavy Bag Combo session is the perfect way to learn the punches, defensive controls and all-round technique needed to step into the ring. You can attempt it over and over again and you don't have to worry about getting hit in the face by the heavy bag.

While you're at it, try to get the World or Friends' Heavy Bag Combo High Score which we track for you with the Online High Scores feature, while you are connected to PlayStation Network.

Know yourself

It's obvious what boxers like Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali are good at in the ring. Tyson was feared as a devastating KO artist while Muhammad Ali was known for being fast as lightning with a granite chin.

You should always be aware of your chosen fighter's strengths and weaknesses, especially Created Boxers used in Legacy Mode, Gyms and Online World Championships.

There are several places you can check these stats, such as Boxer Ratings on the Boxer Select screen or in Create Boxer. Each fighter has unique punch strengths and defensive capabilities. If you aren't aware of these, how are you going to knock opponents out?

Take a deep breath

A common mistake many first time users make once they step into the ring is to get swept up in the emotion of the moment and resort to all out brawling. This is bad against experienced users, and will likely end up with you flat on the canvas with blood streaming out of your face.

Take your time, measure your opponent up and only hit the gas when you're certain there's an opening to land punches. Remember, this is boxing: a single punch is all that's needed to change or end a fight.

Going up against the best

Similarly, and I can't stress this enough, don't get caught up in a brawl if you're fighting a more highly rated opponent.

A good example from the sport of boxing is the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson fight. Granted, many people considered Tyson past his prime but Lewis didn't bother to get mixed up in a bunch of heavy exchanges where Tyson had a puncher's chance of knocking him out.

Instead Lewis chose to stay away from Tyson and use his height, jab and straight right hand to carry the day. The result was a win.

The same point goes for Fight Night Champion. If you keep getting hit with clean, heavy punches, you're increasing your chance of getting KO'd. But then again, it's your face – you do what you want.

Counter culture

Counterpunching can be a bit more challenging to master but it's well worth it. Landed counterpunches do more damage than a regular punch. If you land a modified Heavy Counterpunch, it does even more damage.

Moving side to side, and in and out to make your opponent miss and open up a counter opportunity is a great way to do damage and level the playing field against more highly rated opponents.

Know the score

If it isn't obvious from looking at your opponent's face whether or not you're winning, be on the lookout for Teddy's Scorecard. Fight Night Champion's colourful commentator gives you his take on who's winning the fight at the beginning of the fourth and seventh rounds.

Though it's not a 100 per cent reflection of the true judge's scorecard, it will give you a good indication of where you stand and whether or not you need to increase the pace or risk losing a tight decision.

Sharpen your skills

If you're fighting in Online World Championships or Online Gyms via PlayStation Network be sure to visit the Boxer Growth screen regularly and apply the XP (Experience Points) you've earned. Remember, you get XP even when you lose a fight so you may be able to upgrade a punch or defensive skill to prevent it from happening again.

Put these tips to work before you step into the ring in Fight Night Champion – available in-store for PlayStation 3 now.

FirstPlay: See the future of PS3. First. Episode 26Katherine Heigl Is Jealous Of Josh Duhamel’s Pied Piper Pheromones

Talking NGP with Shuhei Yoshida – part 1

The president of SCE Worldwide Studios (WWS) explains the background to the development process for NGP.

How do you feel the reception to NGP from the public and the media has been?
It's been fantastic. We have worked hard on the NGP platform from the software development and creative standpoint, and judging from consumer and media feedback, our belief on various aspects of developing NGP has been well founded. The feedback we have been getting from game developers has been enormously positive, too. Overall, the reception has been hugely energizing.

How long have you been discussing and developing games for NGP?
Since the beginning of 2008, WWS have been officially involved in the development of NGP by SCEI, and not just with developing games, but in the development of the various aspects of the platform itself too, such as hardware performance and component choices, form factor, usability tests, connectivity, user interface and features, target audience, business models and software product portfolio. In short, everything.

What key learnings were you able take from your work on PSP?
PSP was an impressive piece of hardware when it debuted, with the core performance and the screen enabling PlayStation 2 quality games on the go. However, as the home console generation moved to PlayStation 3, consumers felt games of a similar quality should be playable on handheld consoles too. PSP suffers from the lack of dual analog input, which limits the types of games that play well and PlayStation Network was not supported at launch, although this was added at a later date. Clearly, we have given a lot of thought to this and developed the network plans for NGP based on our experience with PSP.

How does NGP open up the portable PlayStation experience to new genres?
Various unique user interfaces and digital distribution will help developers experiment with many different types of games, whether they be intuitive, casual games using dual touch; augmented reality games; location based fun activities or network only, free to play, online games. The possibilities are endless for creative developers.

How much storage will the new physical media allow and what kind of content will be included on it?
Games will be made available via the new game media, which is based on flash memory, the storage capacity of which will be larger than Universal Media Disc. As it is flash memory based, you will be able to store game saves on it, not just the game itself, as well as some downloadable content if space allows.

What games are you most looking forward to?
I'm looking forward to playing action adventure titles and first person shooters with gorgeous graphics using the dual analog sticks, as well as some new, unique titles which will make use of the NGP user interface. I'm intrigued to see what developers will come up with using the rear touch pad too. Finally, I'm looking forward to seeing how the location based info will be used to enhance games. It is exciting to think how you can integrate your location data into the actual gameplay.

How much input has there been from non-SCE developers?
The NGP development team visited many developers and publishers globally with an early prototype of the hardware to get direct feedback. I also personally joined some of the meetings to discuss various aspects of NGP and the options we were looking at. The input of other developers outside of WWS has been essential for us to make final decisions on NGP. As a result of this, we went through many iterations of NGP. It reminded me of the early days of the original PlayStation, when we visited many developers and publishers to get feedback during the development of that product. It's almost as if SCE has gone back to basics, which should be a good thing

Are you planning to provide bespoke games for PlayStation Suite?
Yes, we are looking to provide short form games on PS Suite, which will run on both PlayStation Certified Android devices and NGP. However, the true heroes on PS Suite will be small, independent developers, who are much more nimble and have some creative ideas that have never been seen before. I'm very excited to see what kinds of game these small developers will provide via PS Suite later this year.

How will the types of game in development progress over time?
We are working on our popular series as well as brand new concepts, large games and short form games, augmented reality games, touch only games and network only games. We are also looking to expand over time from hardcore to casual games, games for younger consumers and non-game applications as well. We understand traditional games are not the only entertainment that people look for, and NGP allows us to develop various types of entertainment on the same hardware platform, which is very exciting.

Thanks to Yoshida-san for taking the time out to answer our questions. Keep an eye on eu.playstation.com for the second part of our exclusive interview with Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios.

Play Like A Pro: Bulletstorm

People Can Fly game designer and community manager, Arcade Berg, offers some top tips to playing in style in Bulletstorm's Echoes Mode on PlayStation 3.

In Bulletstorm you play as Grayson Hunt, a warrior stranded on the abandoned paradise planet of Stygia, surrounded by hordes of mutants and flesh eating gangs. Alongside the game's epic campaign and multiplayer modes, you can take on a series of challenges that test your speed and creativity, Echoes Mode. Sample it right now for free on PlayStation Store by downloading the demo. Check out this guide to creative carnage and racking up the most points in Bulletstorm's Echoes Mode.

Layering Skillshots
Try and execute as many different Skillshots as possible on every single enemy. A lot of the Skillshots can be stacked with others. For example, you gain more Skillpoints from an enemy if he's on fire when you finish him off. That's called the Afterburner Skillshot.

You could also do this while under the influence of Nom Juice for the Intoxicated Skillshot, and add even more points if the enemy is also being affected by Puffball Gas at the same time (this one's called the Antidote Skillshot). There are many different possibilities in Bulletstorm, so just experiment.

Nom Juice
In some Echoes you can find bottles of Nom Juice that will intoxicate you if you drink it, rewarding every kill you perform during this time with the Intoxicated Skillshot. Try and make the most of this time, and remember that your vision will blur and your balance will become affected, increasing the challenge. If you're having a tough time performing Skillshots whilst intoxicated, or if you can't reach the bottle, you can still shoot and break it for two hundred points.

Bonus!
Every time you perform a new Skillshot for the first time in Echoes Mode, the Skillpoints you earn for it will be multiplied by five. Execute as many different Skillshots as you can to take advantage of this.

The Peacemaker Carbine
This weapon is well worth mastering early on, because you have it on you throughout the game. Not only do you want to learn all the Skillshots for the Peacemaker Carbine, you should also think long and hard about how you can combine them with other weapons.

Toxic Love
Always make use of the Berserker enemies' (they are the green guys that charge you) Puffball Masks. If you aim for the head, their mask will explode, poisoning you if you're standing close enough. When poisoned, you get extra points for every enemy you take down. That's called the Toxic Love Skillshot.

Time is of the essence
The faster you finish the level in Echoes Mode, the more Time Bonus points you get. Every second is worth 20 Skillpoints, so try to find the perfect balance between spending an extra second or two to set up that perfect Skillshot, versus earning points for being fast on your feet. If those extra points for the Skillshot are worth more than the time it takes, then go right ahead and do it.

Charge Shots and Thumpers
Using the Leash's Thumper and all the weapons' Charge Shots enables a lot of Skillshots that you can't do otherwise, so make sure you utilize them. Keep in mind that it costs nothing to refill at the Dropkits located throughout the map. Remember, though, you only have three Charge Shots between each Dropkit.

Switch weaponry for new Skillshots
Since every weapon has unique Skillshots, and you get a huge bonus for executing new Skillshots, switching between your equipped weapons is a must. When playing larger maps in Echoes Mode that offer a lot of weapons, make sure you equip new ones and replace the old when you reach the Dropkits to make the most of the Skillshot Bonus.

It's good to learn which weapons work best in certain parts of the Echoes map. For example, it might be better to equip the Flailgun in parts of a map with larger groups of enemies instead of using it at the outset.

The Skillshot database
At times it can become tricky remembering which Skillshots you've performed in a round, and what the different Skillshots for each weapon are. To help with this, pull up the Skillshot Database by pressing SELECT on your wireless controller to see all the Skillshots you've discovered and executed so far.

The Echoes timer stops while you're browsing the Skillshot Database so you can take your time. The database may very well be the tool you need to get those extra 200 points needed to smash your friend's high score!

Demo Guide: Yakuza 4

Master the art of fighting in our guide to the Yakuza 4 demo available to download from PlayStation Store for free.

SEGA has pulled back the curtain on Yakuza 4 with a free demo on PlayStation Store of the latest instalment in the Yakuza series. Check out this guide to mastering the Yakuza 4 demo, available to PlayStation Plus subscribers from 16 February 2011, before going on general release a week later.

Four fighters

The Yakuza 4 demo on PlayStation Store is a teaser for the full game will hit PlayStation 3 on 18th March 2011. The demo allows you to play through four different boss fights using the four main characters in the game: the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, the loan shark Akiyama, escaped convict Saejima and detective Tanimura.

Stay in control

First things first - understand Yakuza's control system. Using your wireless controller you can rotate the camera with the right stick, while controlling your character's movements with the left stick. Attacks are mapped to both the Square button and Triangle button. Pressing the Square button in quick succession in the middle of a brawl triggers a heavy-hitting combo attack, so be sure to pull these off when you can. You can throw an enemy by pressing the Circle button and dodge attacks by holding down the X button.

Look around

Alongside your hand-to-hand combat skills, you can use various objects to aid you in battle. These include a phone book, kettle, barrel and bicycle. Be sure to grab them when backed into a tight spot.

Weapons up

You also have access to numerous weapons in the demo including Kali Sticks, a spear and Katana. These weapons are capable of inflicting huge amounts of damage. To equip them, use the directional buttons on your wireless controller. Enemies will also drop weapons such as golf clubs and baseball bats once you've knocked them out of their hands, so grab them the first chance you get. You can also throw them at an enemy by pressing the Circle button. However, weapons break over time with use so once they've gone you'll have to use your fists.

Finish him

When an enemy is almost defeated you can finish him with a powerful attack by pressing the Triangle button on your wireless controller. Depending on the character you're using, each finish is different.

PlayStation Plus subscribers can get a taste of the brutal Yakuza 4 combat on PlayStation 3 and download the demo for free today. The Yakuza 4 demo will then go on general release on 22nd February 2011.

First Look – SOCOM: Special Forces

Become one of the elite with SOCOM: Special Forces on PlayStation 3 for an explosive shooter where you can prove you're the best of the best.

The world of SOCOM is a tough one. It's full of camaraderie, danger, blood and bullets. Teamwork and tactics are essential to surviving and it's no use having big weapons without the smarts to know when to use them. SOCOM: Special Forces challenges you to show the world - and your friends - that you've got what it takes.

First strike

South East Asia is in chaos. A brutal revolution is taking place which threatens to spill out into global war. Guiding a five-man NATO squad, it's your job to contain the anarchy and neutralise the deadly group known as the Naga. You have six days... and the pressure is on.

Playing as Operations Commander Cullen Grey, this pressure falls on your head. You take direct control of Grey, while your four other computer-controlled teammates, Forty-Five, Wells, Schweitzer and Chung, can act of their own accord or take direct orders from you. They perform actions such as moving into a certain position or concentrating fire on particular targets - they'll also mimic your movements when they're not in a firefight. So you don't need to worry about them taking a few random shots if you're trying to silently sneak through an area full of heavily armed enemies.

Without commands, you can count on your teammates to return fire when needed, assume flanking positions and take cover whenever necessary. Alternatively, you'll gain great satisfaction from positioning them to spring an ambush on the enemy or ordering them to pick off distant targets before your foes even know where you are.

If you prefer to have you mates by your side, you can be joined by four friends for a co-operative mode which is sure to test your ability to work as a unit in the heat of covert operations.

Moving commands

With many objectives to complete, such as downloading data from a computer terminal, destroying a specific target or defending an area from an onslaught of enemies, you'll need to make sure you work as a team and use all the equipment at your disposal.

Weapons such as assault rifles and concussion grenades are great for blazing conflicts, sniper rifles are perfect when you need that touch of long distance subtlety, while shotguns are all about being up close and personal. And if you need something a little more explosive, air strikes can be called in to take care of large targets or deadly artillery.

If you're looking for an even greater advantage, then the PlayStation Move motion controller is what you'll want on your side. With the motion controller to aim your shots and the Navigation Controller or wireless controller manipulating your movement you can take down the enemy with staggering precision and ease. Place the motion controller and navigation controller into a PlayStation Move sharp shooter and you have the ultimate weapon to take on the Naga.

PS Move takes you even deeper into the intense SOCOM: Special Forces experience - and you can expect to be thrown even further into the action if you have a stereoscopic 3D compatible TV. Bullets will ping around you and rockets will look like they're zipping past your head in an intense third person shooter experience few can match.

Target sighted

With its rich environments, a gripping cinematic campaign mode with 14 levels and massive 32 player online mode, SOCOM: Special Forces is sure to give you a blast of addictive shooting action when it reports in for an April 2011 release.

It's your time to shine. So fire up your PS3, choose your weapons, gather your team and get to it. For more intel on SOCOM: Special Forces, keep your sights trained on eu.playstation.com and PlayStation.Blog at blog.eu.playstation.com.
