Phantasy Star returns on PSP

Experience a journey beyond the stars on in Phantasy Star Portable.

Phantasy Star Portable picks up the exciting Phantasy Star Universe saga immediately before Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus. The infestation of the alien SEED was thought to be under control by the end of Phantasy Star Universe, but a new menace has stricken the Gurhal system. Alongside a new character named Vivienne, players must investigate the contamination and clear out the affected wildlife.

Create a hero

Divided into two sections, Story and Multi mode, you start the game by creating a character to play through the narrative. Here you can choose from a huge array of character creation options such as facial features, shape, eye colour, eyebrows, ears, body colour, clothing, voice type, and even voice pitch. Once you have done this, you set off into this new world to begin your quest by talking to characters dotted throughout the game, taking on quests and exploring dungeon like areas in search of enemies and treasures.

The combat in Phantasy Star Portable unfolds in real time with you having complete control over your character's movements in battle. To make the battles in Phantasy Star a little more manageable during moments where there are a large number of enemies on screen at one time, players can map a selected number of items to the Action Palette, which can be accessed by pressing the Circle button during a confrontation.

Depending on which kind of character you choose to be - a Hunter, Ranger, or Force - there is a vast arsenal of both long and short range weaponry for you to wield including swords, handguns, shotguns, lasers and grenade launchers. For players who like to change their fighting styles back and forth over the course of the story, this aspect offers up plenty of variety on the battlefield.

Battle tactics

To keep things fresh during fights there is a timing related feature incorporated into the battle system. The quicker you get to grips with the timing of each of your hits, the more powerful each subsequent attack becomes alongside your rate of fire should you be wielding a firearm. As you progress through the story, you consistently level up by battling enemies and amassing the hundreds of collectibles and loot littered throughout the huge world.

One of the most addictive and fun ways to do this is to join forces with up to three of your friends and play together in the Ad Hoc Mode, tackling the huge number of missions that become available to you. For fans of the classic PlayStation 2 title, Phantasy Star Universe, Phantasy Star Portable offers up the chance to find out just what exactly happened after that epic story unfolded.

For fans of RPG titles and deep action games, there's a wealth of mysteries to unlock over the course of the story including multiple endings that are affected by the decisions you make over the course of the game. Phantasy Star Portable is one adventure you won't want to miss out on.
