PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Eternal Sonata

PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Eternal Sonata

Eternal Sonata will be out in North America in a little over three weeks from now. Those of you who've held out getting the original title on the 360 are probably looking forward to that Oct. 21 date, but how does playing the game right now on your PS3 sound? Sounds good, doesn't it? Well you can download a newly released demo off the Japanese PS Store if you wish and see how things look on the PS3. While you wait for your 600MB download to finish, why not have a short read of our demo impressions to help get you through it?

Anyway, if you've been interested in this title, you might have played it on a friend's 360 or perhaps tried out the XBL demo previously. If you've played it before, you'll notice right away that the game on PS3 looks exactly the same as the original. In other words, it still looks incredibly beautiful with its rich colors and crisp, sharp graphics. Also, if you've already tried out the 360 demo, you'll notice that this new Japanese one is practically a carbon copy -- it follows Allegretto, Polka and Beat on a trip through Tenuto Village and the Heaven's Mirror Forest. So if you've tried it out before, then there's nothing new here for you -- unless you want to make comparisons between versions. For those who've never played Eternal Sonata, you should definitely make some time to try this demo out and continue reading after the break.

Now if you've clicked on through the break and are still reading this, chances are you're still wondering on how to get through the demo. Well don't worry; we'll guide you through the experience. All right, when you start up a "new game" you'll be brought directly to a field area. You'll have to start walking around, and since all the text is in Japanese, don't bother talking to anyone you come across. Note that monsters will be visible on the field map, so you can dodge them whenever you're not in the mood to fight.

Speaking of fights, this is where the game really shines -- its battle system. So, perhaps you won't want to dodge too many fights. Moving on, it's a mixture of real-time and turn-based battling that plays out in a little battle arena of sorts. When your character's turn appears they will be given a set amount of time -- represented by a timer on the lefthand side of the screen -- to execute their actions. Actions are assigned to specific face buttons: circle is to attack, triangle is a special attack, square is for items, and 'x' is for blocking. You can make combos by spamming circle and finish off nicely with a special attack. Blocking happens when it's the enemy's turn, and right before they strike you'll see the word "chance" blink; this signifies that you must tap 'x' to block properly and take less damage. Enemies can block too ... so, while attacking, you might want to position yourself at the backside of an enemy to avoid incurring damage penalties.

PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Eternal Sonata

As for items, you obviously press square to use one up. However, if you're looking for a specific item you'll need to use R1 and L1 to cycle through your in-battle inventory. Now, keep this in mind: your general inventory and the items you can use in battle are kept separate, so you need to open up the menu while on the field to restock your in-battle inventory in case you use up all your healing potions. To open up the menu, just tap triangle while on the field. Your general inventory is the leftmost icon, while the in-battle inventory is the second from the left. Talking again about the field, you'll find question mark bubbles appear overhead as you search around. This means that there is something to interact with at that location -- it could be a hidden item or a clue to something.

That's pretty much all you'll need to know to keep yourself alive. If you're good enough, you might make it all the way through the Heaven's Mirror Forest and face off with the boss there (we won't say who). Presentation-wise, the game is true to the original -- still looks fantastic and there are no hiccups whatsoever. Hopefully, the full game will hold up the standard and we'll have another solid RPG to look forward to playing this fall season.

Canada gets Nariko LBP pre-order from Future Shop

People who pre-order LittleBigPlanet in the United States already know where to go, but the Canadians up north ... they're still wondering what's to become of the second half of their early-payment campaign. While it's been know for some time now that Canucks could get the adorable Kratos Sackboy from EB Games, it's only now that we find out that Nariko Sackgirl will be available via Future Shop.

That's all according to the Future Shop website as pointed out by one of our Canadian readers. Now all that's left is for Media Molecule to confirm this and it's solid as gold.

[Thanks Andrew!]

If you've got PSP-related questions, be sure to ask them on Ask PSP Fanboy.

Ask PS3 Fanboy: Volume 10

Pedro F. asks: What is going to happen with the PS3 MGS4 80GB Bundle? I'm really worried about it because I was saving all year long for a trip to the US in October to (among other things) get my PS3, which by the way I want to get with BC because I have tons of PS1 and 2 games that I still want to play. I don't have space for both PS2 and PS3 at the same time in my room (I even sold my PS2), so I was really excited about the MGS4 pack.
PS3F answers: Bad news Pedro. The 80GB MGS4 bundle will be the last SKU to have BC, and it will be replaced by the 160GB PS3 bundle that comes with a voucher for PAIN and a copy of Uncharted. It'll be replaced officially in November and most likely the MGS4 bundle has already been discontinued. It'll probably be very difficult to find one now, unless you check eBay. Good luck.

Abebe T. asks: I recently bought a PlayStation 3 (MGS4 bundle, if that makes a difference) and I've noticed that it makes a noticeable sound while in standby mode (red light). My PS3 is in my room and although this noise is relatively very quiet, it bothers me while I'm trying to sleep. As a result, I'm forced to turn it fully off using the power switch on the back. It seems like the system was designed to simply be put into standby and only turned fully off once in a while. Is it harmful to the system to be turning it off and on like this every day?
PS3F answers: It is not harmful, so you can keep doing that. However, you might want to take your system to Sony and have it checked. The PS3 should not be making any noises while in standby. Essentially, the machine should not be working out any processes and should not be doing anything. So anything other than silence and a red light is very odd.

Dillon A. asks: I was wondering if the latest updates for Blu-ray players are included in the latest PS3 Firmware updates? Or do we have to download them separately?
PS3F answers: Blu-ray support will be updated in regular PS3 Firmware updates. It's good to know that things are simplified like that, eh?

Ask PS3 Fanboy: Volume 10

Bruno N. asks: Will online ranks from Resistance carry over to Resistance 2?
PS3F answers: We asked this question for you at the recent R2 event. Insomniac says it's not going to happen.

Michael H. asks: Now that Rock Band is coming out with more metal bands (Devildriver, Machinehead and Megadeth) is there some way to plug in two kicks, because these bands use a lot of double bass and that would be really cool to do.
PS3F answers: Rock Band 1 drum kits don't and won't ever, but Rock Band 2 drum kits will be able to support dual kick pedals sometime in the future ... just not now.

Tom B. asks: Will the current Rock Band DLC be downloadable directly to Rock Band 2? I know there's a transfer for people who have Rock Band, but what if Rock Band 2 is the first game I buy?
PS3F answers: Okay, it works like this. When you buy DLC tracks, you install them onto your hard drive. They will remain there as part of your "game data" and will work with both titles. So whether you put in an RB or RB2 disc, both games will pick up the songs stored on the hard drive.

Christian S.: What happened to Rat Race? The episodic comedy game that was announced on the US PlayStation Blog in October last year seems to have gone missing. It was supposed to be beginning 'this winter' last October so that is a rather long delay.
PS3F answers: We regretfully inform you that this title is canceled.

Ask PS3 Fanboy: Volume 10

titus3n5 asks: Is there a PS3 Fanboy mobile in the works? If not are you guys planning on there being one? that would be the awesomest!
PS3F answers: We have a few mobile versions out there. We've got two that you can check out:
iPhone/iPod Touch - http://i.ps3fanboy.comStandard Mobile - http://m.ps3fanboy.com The same goes with PSP Fanboy, but just switch the 3 to a P and you're good as gold. Enjoy PS Fanboy on the go!

Kyle T. asks: Really, how hard is it to implement Trophies in a PS3 game? I read that Bethesda is going to leave out Trophies in Fallout 3 -- is this a result of Microsoft making an "agreement" with them to keep the awards solely on the 360, or is it really that difficult to translate the 360 Achievements over to the PS3?
PS3F answers: It has nothing to do with Microsoft or Achievements, so please don't look at it that way. In the case of Fallout 3, you need to remember that this game has been in development way longer than the appearance of Trophies; Achievements were always going to be in it because they've been around for a long time already and probably have been part of the plan since the beginning of development. Trophies are new and were introduced probably by the time Bethesda was moving on to polish and fine tuning everything -- it's quite too late to put in new code.

Think about Jeopardy!; the title doesn't have Trophy support yet but the in-game awards certainly would make good XMB Trophies. So why then did it not have Trophies? This is a PS3-exclusive ... can't be Microsoft's fault now can it? It all really has to do with the development schedule; developers need to meet certain milestones in order to keep their games on track and out on time for you. Adding new code for Trophies and working out the connectivity to the PSN etc etc obviously will be time consuming (implementation and testing). If Trophies are going to interfere with that sched, then there's no way these developers can stop everything they're doing and put in the feature.

Sean E. asks: Is Afrika a.k.a (Hakuna Matata) coming to North America? And do you think it is the type of game that is worthy of a worldwide release?
PS3F answers: Well, looking back to this Japanese commercial, it seems the Japanese themselves were conscious of the fact that Afrika would probably not be for everyone. SCEE have also said that the game won't be released in Europe, and a North American release seems rather unlikely at this point. We haven't yet played it but it does seem like an interesting -- if not novel -- experience.

D3 officially brings Puzzle Quest to PS3 and TGS

D3 officially brings Puzzle Quest to PS3 and TGS

Last we heard about a Puzzle Quest game coming over to the PS3, it was a slight nod found tucked away under a pile of PEGI-rated titles. This time around it's yet again another shy mention, but one that comes straight from publishers D3 themselves.

Listed under the company's TGS 2008 lineup, Puzzle Quest is mentioned as a downloadable PS3 title. This one is probably one and the same as the title that was discovered under PEGI previously. Not much else was revealed; the game doesn't even have a logo like the other titles on the list. We guess we'll see the game at the show. It looks like it'll be going to Europe and Japan, we'll just have to find out if North America will get some puzzle questing done too.

“It’s cool to have Batman and Scorpion fighting each other”

When Mortal Kombat and DC Comics universe collide, who will survive? Prepare for super fighting, super powers and super men, in a style only Midway can deliver.

The creators of beat ‘em up Mortal Kombat, have taken their fair share of blows – none more so than the opening salvo fired in their direction when it was announced videogames’ most violent fighting title was to be combined with comic book giants, DC Comics. How would anyone be able to defeat the likes of Superman or Batman? Would MK’s legendary Fatalities finishing moves be removed? How on Earth could this all work?

With each answer, Mortal Kombat vs DC gets better and better…

Fighting expectations

There’s no doubt that the opening impressions of Mortal Kombat vs DC are uncanny. The sight of MK mainstays such as Scorpion and Sub Zero squaring off against comic book icons such as Green Lantern and Flash is a tad bewildering. While comics and games have shared a healthy relationship for a fair few decades now, crossovers like this are rare, especially for DC’s beloved characters which have had much less games exposure compared to its Marvel Comics competitors.

Times have changed. DC’s heroes – and villains – are now taking centre stage and duking it out against some of the most brutal combatants ever to grace videogames, and so far the results are rather lovely. Taking the 2D action that occasionally flirts with 3D thanks to sidesteps, dodges and some new combat mechanics, MK vs DC remains true to both franchises.

The answer as to how these two heavyweights come to clash isn’t quite clear yet – Midway is keeping the storyline under wraps beyond a general plot that sees both universes merging (and if you really want to know, the magic-rich powers of the MK fighters can harm the magic-vulnerable Superman, so it’s still respectful to the last son of Krypton). If you’re wondering how the original game idea came together, however, that’s a tale Midway is more than happy to tell.

Them’s fightin’ words

“Somebody really high up in our Marketing department knew someone high up at Warner Bros and DC and on a night out they talked about doing a game together,” divulges Hector M. Sanchez Jr., Producer for Midway. “It turned into this and it was presented to Midway and it was something that we wanted to do. It was something a little bit different.”

In terms of the character roster, neither company seemed to have too many problems in choosing representatives in the game. “We’re keeping our most iconic characters at the forefront; Scorpion, Lui Kang, Sub Zero, those kinda guys,” says Sanchez Jr. “We’re keeping their moves too, but also upgrading them, making them next generation.”

The game also includes the likes of Catwoman, Darkseid, Deathstroke, the Joker, Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman on the DC side, and Jax, Kano, Sonya Blade and Raiden for Midway – to mention but a few of the final line-up, which should feature around 22 characters in total.

Capital punishment, DC style

So, the next concern voiced by some – if Mortal Kombat would be watered down by the presence of DC’s million dollar babies. After all, it just wouldn’t seem too good for superheroes such as Batman and Superman, who don’t kill, to suddenly rip their opponents heads off in a shower of viscera that Mortal Kombat is known for.

“DC is obviously really protective of its brand,” says Sanchez Jr. “Whenever we had any special moves for any of the DC characters, we sent the team video clips and they had to give approval and feedback. But they’ve been really helpful. When we first started working with them they were very strict about stuff, but as we started sending them things, they said you guys know what you’re doing – the character models look good, the gameplay is good, everything’s kinda working, so it’s been cool working with them.”

Even with the additional visual damage that builds up on the characters as they take punishment, DC has been fine with letting its finest look beaten up to a fair degree through ripped clothes, bruises and more. And as for the Fatalities… well, that’s already been well and truly discussed by the companies at hand.

“Finish him!”

“Obviously Superman and Batman can’t kill – they’re not killers – so [these characters] can’t have Fatalities,” says Sanchez Jr. “Instead they have Brutalities, which is basically a finishing move that acts as a heroic version of a Fatality. So for example, Superman beats his rival into the ground but they’re still alive. It’s not as final as a Fatality, but it’s still embarrassing enough when it’s performed on you.”

This isn’t to say there are no Fatalities at all – most of the characters (such as all the DC villains and the whole MK crew) maintain their killing strokes which are performed on the loser at the end of each bout. Batman nemesis, the Joker has one such example involving a fake pistol swiftly followed by a real one, which is utterly true to the character.

“Sometimes the scariest things are the things that you don’t see, so we had to make a point by using the limited amount of violence we have to make the most impact. And we’ve been able to do that by having the camera shake, DUALSHOCK feedback, stuff like that. It’s still intense, which is the main quality to keep.”

(Not the) Final Round…

Old school Mortal Kombat fans will find comforting familiarity in the gameplay, with its tense array of meaty melee attacks, over-the-top special moves, crazy projectiles and everything else you would expect. The addition of the new fighting methods Klose Kombat (where close-quarters fighting mode is engaged for what Sanchez Jr. describes as an “interactive throw”) and Freefall Kombat (3D level transitions where you fight as your combatants move, crash or fall to another stage) show that Midway isn’t resting on its laurels with the DC super team-up.

Mortal Kombat vs DC is in full flow and looking to take on all comers, regardless of whether you’re a believer or not. “Even with a Teen rating we’re still making a brutal, intense fighting game,” smiles Sanchez Jr. And it’s hard to disagree based on the promise and play so far. With Midway and DC combining, anything is possible.

“It’s cool to have Batman and Scorpion fighting each other, it’s cool to have Joker and Superman and those kind of characters in this kind of universe,” says Sanchez Jr. “It’s been a good experience.”

WRUP: What are you playing?

WRUP: What are you playing?

It's week two of WRUP. Find out what the staff is playing -- and let us know if you're one of the many that are playing the gazillion games that came out on PSN this week.
Jem Alexander - What won't I be playing? There's the LittleBigPlanet beta to be getting on with, plus I need to finish Call of Duty 4 (really enjoying it so far). WipEout HD will also be eating my time, along with Mega Man 9. Oh, and I keep meaning to start Burnout Paradise and rack up a few Trophies. Three Xbox 360 games are still in their plastic, waiting for me. Haven't a clue when I'll have time to get to those ...
Majed Athab - I've been playing a bit (yes just a bit) of WipEout HD. The reason for this is because it is actually giving me headaches. I am literally getting dizzy and can only play for 20 minutes at a time. Other than that, I picked up SimCity Creator for the Wii. Oh, how I miss you SimCity -- haven't really gotten back to this series since SimCity 3000. This week is way better than the last.
Alan Tsang - I'll try out Mega Man 9 and try to finish up Star Ocean: First Departure, but since I've been sick, more than likely I'll just be getting some rest.
Andrew Yoon - This is my last weekend in America before heading off to Korea and Japan. Too bad the NY Anime Fest is in town, which will hinder my time to game. (If you're at the show, let me know!) When I do scrounge up the time, I'll be playing more Buzz! and LittleBigPlanet.

"He’s a wanderer, a drifter, an adventurer… a vagabond."

Ubisoft’s popular and princely series has a new direction and a new lead to give a truly next generation feel to the Prince of Persia name. Sword at the ready – this is going to be a sharp one...

There's a new prince in town. And despite coming to your screens with sword in hand, billowing red-blue wrap and dashing good looks, this isn't the protagonist from previous Prince of Persia games. Ubisoft is heralding a fresh dawn for its beloved series and, excitingly, this is merely the beginning of the story that is Prince of Persia on PLAYSTATION 3...

Crown jewels

There's a definite next generation look to the forthcoming game that immediately stands out thanks to its beautiful watercolour style and lusciously fluid animation, already nicely meshing with the developing gameplay that bears more than a passing resemblance to the tried and tested 3D action adventure platforming, puzzle solving and swordplay the series is known for.

Appearing like a painting or drawing come to life, Prince of Persia follows the tale of the new Prince on an adventure with an equally new and magically gifted companion named Elika, looking to defeat Ahriman, the ancient God of Darkness who has pitched the world into evil and corruption. However, it may come as a surprise to some that this Prince isn't actually royalty by any means.

"The Prince himself isn't a prince of Persia," explains Chris Easton, Community Developer for Ubisoft. "He's a wanderer, a drifter, an adventurer, a vagabond. He goes from place to place, going through battles and adventures, he doesn't really care about anything - he just wants to get some gold, go to town and blow it on booze. But then he meets Elika, who asks for his help to rid the world of this corruption and he agrees - and they begin their journey together. And it's through this journey that the Prince learns what it is to be a prince of Persia."

"You like me ‘cause I'm a scoundrel..."

In using a more Star Wars' style Han Solo rogue and an Artificial Intelligence controlled partner that accompanies him on the adventure, it may seem that Prince of Persia is taking a few more risks than its predecessors, the Sands of Time trilogy. There is also the ability to choose your path through various levels in the game, even though each player will start and finish the game the same way. Elika has a compass that will point to the quickest route through a land, but you'll still have the choice to explore if you wish, looking for secret areas and items.

Despite these departures, the fundamentals that made the series so popular in the first place are still there. "It remains true to what we call the pillars of Prince of Persia - the elements that are essential to a Prince of Persia game," says Easton. "These are: acrobatics, combat, puzzle solving and the Prince, all wrapped up in an epic story. If the game doesn't have one of these elements, it's not a Prince of Persia game."

To these ends, the Prince is equipped with a pleasing array of acrobatics, dashing along roofs, swinging from iron rings and running across walls. It's something Easton wants to emphasise as he effortlessly demonstrates the protagonist's ability to bound off each piece of scenery in various and extremely graceful ways. "We want the Prince to have this rhythm as he goes through a level," he says.

Behind every great man is a great woman

Those concerned about Elika being too much of a tether to the Prince's free-wheeling agility shouldn't worry. Throughout Easton's demo, the AI character doesn't force him to backtrack, get stuck on scenery or display any of the bugbears that occasionally come with such accompaniment. In fact, at several stages the Prince interacts with Elika in his flips and twists, increasing the elegance of his movement.

The level of interaction between the Prince and Elika is measured to your needs - you can help her up a platform if you wait for her, although she's more than able to help herself. Similarly, staying close to her lets the two characters sporadically engage in light conversation. She also acts as a checkpoint, bringing you back to a stable platform or restart point instead of using a Game Over screen, as a way of keeping you immersed in the fantasy world.

Better still, Elika assists you in the refined combat system, which features more one-on-one battles in a nod to the very first Prince of Persia game, making for tenser fights compared to ones which feature masses of enemies at once. With contextual attacks, Elika's magical aid, and the sheer amount of leaping, diving and clashing of swords, battles in Prince of Persia are already a thing of beauty.

Return of the...

With its suave looks and energetic gameplay, Prince of Persia packs more than a fair share of Eastern promise, regardless of whether you're a fan of the 2D originals or the Sands of Time trilogy. Ubisoft clearly wants to keep the quality suitable for a series of princely stature and so far there's plenty to suggest that this wanderer, drifter, adventurer, vagabond... and eventually, prince, may well reclaim his gaming throne.

FIFA Interactive World Cup FAQ

Everything you need to know to take part in the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2009.

What is the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC)?

Presented by EA Sports and PlayStation, and now in its fifth season, the FIWC is the world's largest football gaming competition. In the 2008-09 season, 30,000 virtual footballers from 179 countries entered the competition, either online or at live events, which climaxed with a live final at Berlin's Sony Centre.

What will the winner receive?

Besides the right to call themselves the world's greatest virtual footballer, the overall winner will receive a USD 20,000 cash prize, a Kia Soul car, a beautiful trophy and the chance to attend the FIFA World Player Gala and stand alongside the superstars of world football.

How do I enter?

There are two ways to qualify for the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final: via Online Qualification on PLAYSTATION Network or by participating in one of the live qualification events across the globe.

Online entrants must purchase a copy of FIFA 09 for PLAYSTATION 3 and sign up for a free PLAYSTATION Network account, as well as an EA Online Account. Once you have these, select FIFA Interactive World Cup from the Online Game Modes section of FIFA 09's main menu. Once you have entered your EA Online Account username and password, you will have access to the FIFA Interactive World Cup hub. From there you can play competitive matches online, practice offline, view current leaderboards and visit lobby rooms.

The results of competitive matches will determine your place on the leaderboard for your confederation, for example, German players will appear on the European Confederation Leaderboard.

Alternatively, you can attend one of 19 Live Qualifier tournaments and play shoulder to shoulder against your opponents for the chance to become National Champion and book your place at the 2009 Grand Final.

How many players will be at the Grand Final?

Thirty-two players will battle it out at the Grand Final, with the 19 National Qualifiers appearing alongside the 13 winners of the global Online Competition on PLAYSTATION Network.

When does qualification start and finish?

The Online Qualification Leaderboards will open with the launch of FIFA 09 for PLAYSTATION 3 in October 2008 and close in May 2009, coinciding with the European football season. Live Qualifier events will run between October 2008 and April 2009; keep can eye on www.FIFA.com/FIWC for the full schedule.

What happens at the Grand Final?

The players will play in round-robin groups before progressing to the knockout stages, much like in the FIFA World Cup. The matches, however, are just one part of the spectacle; participants and spectators will enjoy the unique party atmosphere, live music and appearances from real life footballers.

Where can I find more information?

Keep checking eu.playstation.com, where you will find regular FIWC updates once the season kicks off in October. Alternatively, head to www.FIFA.com/FIWC for more information on FIFA and for the Live Qualifier schedule.

"Play just the way you like it"

It’s been kept under wraps for a while, but Killzone 2’s multiplayer mode has finally been unveiled – and the ‘zone has never been or looked hotter...

There's something special about a really good multiplayer first-person shooter. Something that grabs a part of you and ignites it in the flames of pure addictive gameplay. It's an intangible essence that few titles can claim - and after some exposure to Killzone 2's long awaited and very secretive multiplayer mode, it looks like Guerrilla Games has sparked something that's going to burn very, very bright.

Beating you like a Guerrilla

An opening demonstration by the development team offers two vital points that are eagerly stressed from the very beginning. The first is that Guerrilla wants its game to be as accessible and new-player friendly as possible, as explained by Eric Boltjes, Senior Multiplayer Gameplay Designer.

"For us it means that everybody, regardless of whether they're a new player to the FPS genre or if they're an experienced online player, should be able to go online, join games and start playing the game as quickly as possible."

Given that many FPS titles are typically designed for core gamers, this is something likely to come as a relief to anyone wanting to dip their toes in the intense waters of multiplayer combat. So with that important factor, the second point made by Boltjes is even more impressive: "We want to make sure everyone can enjoy the game and play just the way you like it - you can create any type of game and change almost every aspect of it."

A wide and encompassing Killzone

It's an ambitious statement. Yet after keeping such a major part of the cinematic and graphically impressive Killzone 2 under wraps, Guerrilla is clearly not doing things by halves, refusing to let its large and atmospheric single player mode shadow its multiplayer sibling. In short, there's a massive wealth of options, with five game variations (such as search and destroy and assassination) each playable across any of the eight available maps.

Ready for more? Well, a class based badge system means you can choose two abilities from a choice of 16 to represent your style of play. For example, you can be a Medic who revives downed teammates, or a Scout who can become near-invisible thanks to a cloaking device.

Your primary badge defines the main role of your character, as well as its appearance, while the secondary badge serves as a complementary ability that enhances the main role. So if you decide to take the secondary badge ability of a Medic, you'll also be able to give health packs to your partners. Mix and match your badges wisely and you can become a dominant force in the game.

Having a bot of fun

Up to 32 players can be supported at once across any of the maps (although naturally many are designed for a certain number, Guerrilla really wants its FPS to be truly customisable, so the choice really is yours) and not only that, but clans of up to 64 players are possible, allowing you to compete for Valor Points in tournaments, and Artificial Intelligence controlled bots can be placed in the game at will, both on and offline.

The inclusion of bots is something that ties in perfectly with Killzone 2's ethos of making sure everyone feels up to scratch with the game, regardless of their experience. "[Now] you can enjoy all the features of multiplayer, offline. It means pretty much anything that a player can do online as well, including play all the missions, use all the abilities and use all the weapons."

And still there's more. "At the end of every game you see how many points you've scored," says Boltjes. "You can see if you've ranked up, you see what you've unlocked, how you can use it and how it benefits you. The game features 12 military ranks, each unlocking new features. In addition we have 46 different medals which you earn by doing special things in the game, such as doing ten headshots or reviving ten people."

Shooting from the hip

An interesting part of all these weapons and medals is that they open up more features to play with online, something that Guerrilla is keen on doing to maintain a level of transparency and friendliness for its players. "We really want to introduce new features gradually, so as you play [and] score points you unlock new things," says Boltjes. "You get new features and then still have enough scope left for the more advanced features for our hardcore audience to still be interested over the longer term."

On top of all that, there are over 100 different player statistics which are tracked by the official Killzone 2 site at http://www.killzone.com/kz/. Kills, time spent online, items picked up and more are logged online. "As you play the game you learn more about it, and you learn more about how you want to experience and play the game itself. Some people like sniping, some people like playing in a team, some people like playing with big weapons. We've really tried to support specific player preferences," explains Boltjes.

Even the more basic elements of gameplay are designed with accessibility in mind, with the ability to form your own squads and vocally chat on multiple channels. "We really want to inspire teamwork," says Boltjes.

Kill or be...

So far Killzone 2's multiplayer impresses as much as its story mode, with its fast paced and diverse gameplay, supremely attractive visuals and compelling map design. Battles are tense and entertaining, leaving the distinct impression that a lot of effort and thought as gone into putting out something that can compete with its rivals.

Guerrilla's open and friendly mantra, something that could help bring in more people to the FPS genre, can only be seen as a good thing, emphasised by the sheer amount of customisation and options available to make its game as simple or as complex as you want it. Killzone 2 just added another stripe to its ever impressive uniform of potential honours - so make sure to have it in your sights in the run up to its 2009 launch.

FIFA, EA SPORTS and PlayStation ring in the 2009 season of the FIFA Interactive World Cup.

FIFA, the world’s governing body of football, Electronic Arts and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have announced the new season of the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC), the world’s only official FIFA global football gaming competition. The FIWC is a season-long tournament mirroring the real world of football in which competitors from all around the world can participate playing EA SPORTS FIFA 09 on PLAYSTATION 3.

This year marks the fifth FIWC season, which will kick off with the launch of FIFA 09 on October 3, 2008. Players will be able to compete at one of 19 physical FIWC 09 Qualifier Events across the globe, starting in New Zealand on October 25 and covering countries all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Italy, South Africa and the US. Players will also be able to compete for the 13 places available in the final for the best online players via PLAYSTATION Network. The 32 finalists will compete to be crowned FIFA Interactive World Player of the Year, rewarded with an invitation to the FIFA World Player Gala along with a USD 20,000 cash prize and an all new KIA Soul. For the first time in the tournament’s history, the runner up will receive USD 5,000, while the player coming third will be awarded USD 1,000.

Hopeful competitors can get a head start and practise their skills for the tournament now by playing the official FIFA 09 PS3 demo available for download worldwide now on PLAYSTATION Network. Registration for participating in the online leg of the FIWC 09 tournament will take place directly inside the retail version of FIFA 09 on PS3 in early October.

“The FIFA Interactive World Cup has established itself as a premier gaming tournament, and the only one under the FIFA banner. Over the last years I have witnessed incredible virtual football action which promises thrilling games and excitement at the upcoming interactive season. I am really looking forward to the kick-off of the 5th edition where everyone has the unique chance to become a real FIFA World Cup champion,” said FIFA Executive Member Chuck Blazer, himself an avid gamer.

“Over the last four years, the FIFA Interactive World Cup has become the gaming competition for football fans and gamers. It’s the only tournament in which competitors can play as their football heroes and have their virtual skills recognised by FIFA, the real life world governing body of football,” said Matt Bilbey, Senior Director, Sports Marketing, EA. “With our partners at FIFA and PlayStation, we’re excited for this year’s season to kick off when FIFA 09 launches in early October. The development team has done an incredible job in making FIFA 09 even more authentic and fun to play, so make sure you get a taste of it now and start practicing with the demo on PLAYSTATION Network.”

”This year is PlayStation’s second season involved in the FIWC and we are very excited to see the tournament grow and evolve to establish itself as the biggest online football tournament in the world,” said Darren Carter, VP for Brand and Consumer Marketing, SCEE. “This season players will be able to truly understand the unique experience FIFA 09 on PLAYSTATION 3 and PLAYSTATION Network offers and we look forward to seeing players from around the world go onto the PLAYSTATION Network and get practising immediately.”

During last year’s tournament, players spanning the globe from New Zealand to South Africa, Brazil to Korea to the USA and Italy dribbled and scored their way through the tournament’s 20 live qualifiers, while over 25,000 players competed in the online leg. In the end, it was Alfonso Ramos from Spain who emerged victorious from the Grand Final in Berlin. He will join his real life football heroes on January 12, 2009 at the FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich to accept his trophy.

EA SPORTS FIFA 09 for PLAYSTATION 3 is now powered with dynamic real-world data and analytics, lifting the game to new heights of authenticity for football fans and gamers connected online. The adidas Live Season service is based on how real players performed in the most recent real-world matches. Gameplay will change dynamically as the performance of players and football teams in the real world experience the highs and lows during their campaigns. Additionally over 250 gameplay additions and enhancements, Custom Team Tactics, 10v10 Online Team Play and the enhanced Be A Pro: Seasons will offer players a unique football experience that matches the complexity, finesse and beauty of the real-world game. To learn more about FIFA 09 visit www.FIFA09.ea.com.

Details about the live qualifier events near you will be made available over the coming weeks at www.FIFA.com/FIWC, so check in regularly to keep your fingers on the pulse of the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2009.

If you're a regular reader of this site, then you shouldn't find yourself estranged upon hearing the name Resistance 2. In fact, it should really get you pumped up as you know as much as we do that it will be one of the biggest titles for the PS3 this holiday season. While many of you may be quietly ripping it up on Girl With A Stick, we haven't been left in the dark for our share of Chimera blasting. We've also got our own taste of the viral-infected shooter having played both the single player campaign and a full 8-player online co-op game.

We first started things off by going through the single player campaign. There were two levels available to us: the tutorial level at the very start which takes place in Iceland, and the second took us to the forests of Orick, California -- to which you've already witnessed the opening cinema. The Iceland level looked incredibly familiar; in fact, the very first screenshots ever revealed on this game came from the Iceland level. Think back ... that had a Goliath in it. A Goliath in the opening mission? That's pretty intense considering how these babies didn't appear until much later in the original title. From the very beginning of the game, we could already feel the pace and tone, and it was definitely set to awesome.

PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Resistance 2

The Iceland mission was a lot of fun for a tutorial. It didn't even feel like a tutorial; it was basically a solid level which just showed off various weapons, different types of enemies, and -- like we said -- just really set the tone and pace for what else was to come. As for the Orick level, I hadn't personally played through it, but I had watched it being played over and over again with amusement. Part of that amusement was due to the fact that most who played it kept dying to the claws of the 'Predator-like' Chameleon Chimera. These are wickedly fast Chimera with invisibility cloaks that'll come up and kill in one hit. Avoiding them isn't easy, but it's possible by listening carefully for the sound they make and then keeping those sharp eyes peeled.

While we enjoyed our time with the single player experience, we certainly had exponentially more fun with the online co-op. Andrew and I joined forces to save mankind from the Chimera curse, he chose to be a medic and I took on the role of a soldier. As you probably already know, there are only three classes to choose from: medic, soldier, and special ops. Anyway, we suited up with six other journalists and Insomniac guys for a full 8-player game, and what we ended up with was probably the most fun online multiplayer experience I've ever had.

PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Resistance 2

We entered one of the Iceland stages, and right away we were tackling giant-sized behemoths as a cohesive team. Things really got exciting when hordes (and I mean hordes) of Chimera started appearing ... and even one time dropping right down on us. It was a hectic battle -- in a positive respect of course. An interesting thing to take note of is that some of the enemies you'll encounter will have a red bar and a red star above their head. This signifies that they are a primary target, or consider them as "bosses" for their extra toughness. The more stars, the tougher the enemy; max number of stars is set at three. As for the red bar, it's the enemy boss' life meter.

Now, one other item regarding the co-op mode is that it can be really tough as well. It's easy to fail if you're not acting properly as a team. It's important that all team members act according to their roles and give each team member support because, quite frankly, you'll be fighting massive waves of enemies that will greatly outnumber you and outmatch you in stamina -- yeah, they obviously take more hits than you do. Overall, the co-op mode is going to definitely be fun for those that love small group squads versus massive enemy armies and just good old strategic combat. Simply put this mode is irresistible.

All in all, it was difficult to peel away from the gaming booth and end our time with R2, but hey, that's the way it's got to be. We're excited to see more and certain you're looking to get your very own hands-on time with the public beta next month. The release date of November 4 is a long time away from now, and yet, we can't help start pondering whether we're going out to vote that day or staying home indoors and fighting the good fight ... you know, for our country's sake. Save the country by voting for the right president, or save the country from a Chimeran invasion? It's a tough choice indeed.

The Punisher: No Mercy coming exclusively to PSN

What's so strange about The Punisher: No Mercy? Well, where do we begin? It's a downloadable game from Budapest, Hungary based on Marvel Studios' Punisher character. It's exclusive to PSN and utilized the Unreal Engine, and it will be the first-ever FPS game developed exclusively for download on PS3. According to the PlayStation.blog, "Our main focus is to create an awesome online multiplayer experience with the style and grit from the Punisher's world, complete with characters like Jigsaw, Bushwacker, Barracuda and even Silver Sable."

No screenshots were included with the post. Undoubtedly, we'll be trying to find out more about this strange new title.

PSP is three!

Take a fresh look at PSP, as it celebrates its third birthday on eu.playstation.com.

After successful releases in Japan and America, PSP was launched across European PAL territories in September, 2005. To mark the event, early adopters who registered their systems were given a free copy of hit movie Spider-Man 2 on UMD.

Along with the hardware there were plenty of software titles ready to take advantage of PlayStation's new portable format, with Ape Academy, Everybody's Golf, MediEvil: Resurrection, Ridge Racer and WipEout Pure, spearheading the first wave.

In essence PSP is a powerful, portable gaming device that allows you to enjoy games, music, photos, videos, movies and the Internet on the move. Due to regular System Software updates, this core functionality has expanded greatly, making it possible for you to use PSP your way.

Supporting a range of Wireless functions, PSP lets you share content and play games locally with friends via Ad Hoc Mode or experience online games, access the Internet and RSS feeds, and use Remote Play to connect to your PLAYSTATION 3 wherever you have access to a Wireless hotspot with Infrastructure Mode.

Hand in hand with exceptional connectivity has been the ability to download additional content such as full games, game expansions, music, themes, and videos. Initially this was from a bespoke PSP Download service, which evolved into PLAYSTATION Store. Everything from new and classic games, such as flOw and Bishi Bashi, to videos and music, such as the recent Movement campaign, are available.

In 2007 a new model was launched. Significantly lighter and slimmer than the original but still featuring the stunning 4.3 inch LCD screen,  PSP-2000 incorporates additional features such as a TV out connector socket for viewing games, pictures, videos and UMD movies on a big screen television, and the ability to recharge the system via a USB cable connected to either a PS3 or PC.

2007 also saw the introduction of the Go! range of products for PSP, tools and new functionality designed to enhance your experience on the move. First off was Go!Cam, a system software update that made use of the new camera attachment, which fixes to the top of PSP via the High Speed USB connector. This was followed in 2008 by Go!Messenger and Go!Explore, offering voice chat and video messaging, and GPS navigation respectively.

In three years, as well as enhancements in functionality, there have been some incredible games released for PSP - echochrome, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, LocoRoco, Lumines, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Patapon, Secret Agent Clank and Tekken: Dark Resurrection - to name a few, and the best is yet to come...

With new titles such as Buzz!: Brain Bender and LocoRoco 2 on the horizon, plus PSP-3000 launching in Europe, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand from October 15, 2008, there has never been a better time for PSP.

The new model, in addition to offering all of the key features and ergonomic design of PSP-2000, features improved screen quality, offering crisper colours with more definition when outside in natural light. PSP-3000 also includes a built-in microphone, maximising the communication features of products such as Go!Messenger and Skype.

Around the launch of PSP-3000, eu.playstation.com will be running a series of in-depth articles discussing different aspects of PSP and how to make the most of this powerful device. Check back regularly to learn what you could be missing.

To start with, there will be a free Spaceman costume for Sackboy, perfect for preparing to launch! There will also be a rare Week One Sackboy t-shirt to prove that you were there at the start. Both items will be available for a limited time only.

Of course, it’s not just about what your Sackboy will be wearing this season, it’s what he can do that counts. LittleBigPlanet delivers over 50 levels to play out of the box either on your own or in up to four-player multiplayer. You also get the most intuitive and powerful content creation tools ever seen in a console game, enabling you to make whatever you want.

Then, thanks to the ability to share your creations or download others via PLAYSTATION Network, the world of LittleBigPlanet will keep on growing forever as gamers make their own games: there will be new experiences to play every time you go online!

LittleBigPlanet: get ready for gaming to change forever.

Gackt helps sell PS3 slots game Bounty Killer

Gackt helps sell PS3 slots game Bounty Killer

Japan's gothic pop idol, Gackt, is trying out more cameos in videogames yet again. Last we saw the skinny effeminate-looking man, he was wearing a red overcoat and spewing lines of pretentious poetry in Crisis Core:Final Fantasy VII -- or, at least his likeness was. Anyway, he's back again and this time in a Japan-only PS3-exclusive slot machine title called Yamasa Digi World SP: Bounty Killer.

The main character in the game (since when did slot machine games need heroes?) is modeled after Gackt, and the multi-talented dude's music will also be featured in the game. Tracks like "Another World," "White Eyes," and "Justified" are included in the soundtrack. The game goes on sale in Japan on October 30 ... but rabid fangirls who've never played slots in their entire lives have probably snatched up all the pre-orders already. You can check the character design and cover art right here.

Proto Man playable in Mega Man 9 ... for a price

Proto Man playable in Mega Man 9 ... for a price

Want to perform a slide tackle or charge shot in Mega Man 9 this Thursday? Sorry, you're out of luck. Mega Man seems to have lost those abilities in his transition back to the NES era (even though he had those abilities from Mega Man 3 onwards, which was a NES title). There may still be a chance, though. GamesRadar is reporting that Proto Man will be a downloadable character and will have both of these abilities. You'd better get your nickels and dimes ready, though, because he's not going to be free.

He should be arriving on the US PSN store during the week of October 6th and will cost you $1.99. Think of him as an "easy mode." From what we've played of Mega Man 9, by October 6th, you'll be screaming for an easy mode.

Sony/Toshiba making 45nm Cells in '09, slim PS3 on way?

Sony/Toshiba making 45nm Cells in 09, slim PS3 on way?

The current PS3s already have efficient functionality with the shrunken 65nm Cell processor, but now things are going to get even smaller. Sony and Toshiba have plans on mass producing a 45nm Cell processor starting in 2009. The plan is to integrate them first into PS3s. The result of which will allow PS3s to save power up to 40 percent.

As usual, smaller chips mean less heat, less space, and more reliability. Engadget suggests that this new hardware revision could usher in a price cut and a PS3-slim model. All seems logically sound, though -- even if the chips were produced early in the year -- we still wouldn't see the end product until late 2009 at the very earliest. So if you've been holding out for a PS3 until the slim comes into town ... you've still got a long wait ahead of you buddy.
