Guide your tribe again in Patapon 2

Master the beat once again with the rhythmic wonder that is Patapon 2 on PSP.

The story of the Patapon continues, picking up where the first game left off as the Patapon tribe have constructed their boat and set sail for new lands. On route their boat is quickly destroyed by a giant sea monster, the Kraken and the Patapon find themselves washed up on the shores of a strange new land inhabited by a tribe called the Karmen.

As their god, your goal is to lead the colourful Patapon through a series of epic battles against the Karmen as well as a series of gigantic monsters. Using the brilliant and engaging gameplay mechanic of attacking and defending to the rhythm of the game that made the original such an engaging experience, Patapon 2 ups the beat for this toe-tapping sequel.

Monsters and music

Controlling the Patapon is simple: utilising a combination of the X, Square, Triangle and Circle buttons on the PSP you tap four-note rhythms in time to the background beat, which in turn tells the tiny Patapon what they have to do in battle. If you don't perform a rhythmic button tapping movement, they won't move and are at risk of perishing from an attack from either the rival tribe or monsters of this strange island, so it's essential that you keep the beat flowing in order to keep your Patapon alive.

Adding even more depth and detail to the experience is The Evolutionary Tree, a new feature which allows you to take three Patapon character types and manage them. The three types, the Yaripon, Tatepon and Yumipon each have their own moves when it comes to both defending and attacking enemies during play, so by building and managing an army that suits your playing strengths, you can create a Patapon tribe that can take on just about any task that lies ahead.

Plus, any Patapon fan who still has their game save from the debut game can import these to Patapon 2, which then allows you to bring across any money, weapons or items, getting you off to a great start with a well equipped army from the outset. There's also another great new addition to the Patapon tribe too, the Heropon.

Drum with friends

These new Patapon are the leaders of your group and have special abilities called Hero Powers that are activated once you have chained four perfect beats in a row. Once you have done this, you trigger special moves such as a boost in your Patapon's defence or attacking abilities.

Another excellent aspect of the game is the fun filled Ad Hoc Mode multiplayer that puts you and three friends in co-operative control of your tribe as you work in tandem to take down enemies while securing tonnes of items, minerals and material that can be used in your single player game. It's great fun for helping each other out and strengthening both you and your friend's Patapon tribes for future battles.

With a whopping 40 levels to master the beat of, there is plenty here to do and with the huge array of new options including The Evolutionary Tree, Heropon characters, hidden items, zany mini-games and the super addictive multiplayer, Patapon 2 packs hour upon hour of funky fun for everyone and anyone who likes to move to the beat of the drum.
