Game Talk: Dead Nation

Take a mad dash through the zombie laden streets of Dead Nation with Housemarque tester Tuukka Meklin.

Tuukka Meklin took some time out from fending off the zombies of Dead Nation to tell eu.playstation.com what it's like to work as a tester on Housemarque's PlayStation 3 exclusive blaster.

What does working as a tester on Dead Nation involve?

My time and focus, apart from endless testing, has been mostly spent withgameplay issues, going through design ideas, difficulty levels and the gameplay balance.

How did you come to work for Housemarque?

It all started when the Housemarque team contacted me because I had done so well on the Super Stardust HDleaderboards. They asked if I was interested in testing their upcoming SSHD add-ons. I had no previous experiencein game development, but played my fair share of videogames. After several visits to the team's office, one thing led to another and now I'm working here full-time.

How did you manage to achieve your high scores on Super Stardust HD?

In short, practice makes perfect. But I also exchanged many ideas and tactics with fellow Stardusters like Somini82, ER777 and Bridy. And no, the Housemarque team did not tell me any secrets or anything that would've helped me to achieve those scores back then or now.

What skills and experience from playing Super Stardust HD did you bring over to Dead Nation?

Well, I guess my way of thinking and analysing SSHD to its limit has been somewhat helpful at least. Also, the fact that both games are dual-stick shooters has made it easy for me to compare the overall gameplay. I'd say I'm pretty experienced in that area.

What Super Stardust HD survival techniques are useful in Dead Nation?
Well, shooting and destroying everything before they can reach you is always helpful. SSHD and DN both have a quick escape option in the form of a boost or rush, and both are unlimited but can only be used when fully charged. After that it gets a bit different, as where SSHD had bombs, DN offers items, distracting car alarms and more.

How have you helped balance the difficulty level for new and veteran gamers alike?

In Dead Nation there are appropriate difficulty levels for all kinds of players. My focus has mainly been around the Undead difficulty, which is the hardest of the five difficulty levels, but I've also helped to find the most difficult parts of the easier modes and made them more enjoyable to casual players. I've also taken part in tutorials and information sections that are given to the players to make DN more accessible.

How do you feel the two player mode helps alter the dynamic of Dead Nation?

When playing DN with a partner you can really do more planning and figure out effective strategies. The enemies have two targets and players can take advantage of that. There are lots of fun combinations of weapons and items you can try out with a friend.

What's impressed you most about the game?

The amount of enemies on-screen at once. Explosions with zombie body parts flying across the screen. Awesome lighting and shadows. The atmosphere created by the music and sound effects. I'm also looking forward to see how the global status of each nation will shape up.

Do you think you will be able to get the best high score on Dead Nation?

We'll see. But it would be unfair if I posted a score on day one. I've had a few months to play it now, so at first I think I'll just be checking out the competition and getting in on the action when the time seems right. I hope there will be even more competition than there is in SSHD. Also let's not forget that every single play session helps your country to clear the zombie virus!

SingStar in dance-off with Louie Spence

Super fan Rosie Lawrence sang and danced her way to glory against Pineapple Dance Studio's Louie Spence.

Louie Spence, one of the dance industry’s most unique talents has a reputation that precedes him. Known affectionately as ‘Lay out Lou with liquid legs and a lisp’, he attributes his astounding flexibility to his privileged council estate upbringing, where his Mum, Pat, used to fold him up into an MFI cabin bed. He enjoyed an illustrious career as a dancer before breaking into television in 2006 as a judge on Cirque de Celebrit and he is now a household name and tabloid favourite after appearing in Sky1's Pineapple Dance Studios documentary where he unquestionably stole the show.

The SingStar community was asked via My SingStar Online to perform and upload a track from Louie's What's Hot list. Louie loved Rosie's performance and judged it to be the best from a shortlist of entries for it's artistic flair and excellent wig use. Rosie won a trip for her and a guest to London for a one-to-one SingStar Dance session with Louie himself and to attend the exclusive SingStar Dance launch party at Anaya in Mayfair.

Rosie grabbed the PlayStation Move for her dance off with Louie and after a few warm up tracks she overtook the diva extraordinaire to the moves of Ricky Martin’s’ Living the Vida Loca’... Rosie and Louie were joined by rock & pop royalty including Jade Jagger & Joe McElderry – favourite track of the night Salt n Pepper’s Push It... and they certainly did!

God of War: The story so far

With God of War: Ghost of Sparta on PSP available to buy in shops and on PlayStation Store, take a look back at Kratos' vengeance fuelled journey on PlayStation.

In the beginning

Set halfway through Kratos' ten years of service to the gods, God of War: Chains of Olympus on PSP sees the mighty Spartan seek absolution from the sins of his past after being deceived into murdering his wife and child by Ares. Now, a champion to the gods, he must embark on brutal crusades that have become the stories of legend in the ancient world.

However, when the world is plunged into eternal darkness and the gods are rendered powerless after the sun god, Helios, disappears, Kratos is tasked with retrieving him in a bid to break Morpheus' stranglehold over the other gods and Earth itself. Along the way he journeys to lands no mortal has ever walked upon and, before he reaches the end of his task, he must choose between personal redemption and saving the world from obliteration.

In Chains of Olympus Kratos will have to face all manner of foes including the Persian King, a hulking foe leading his army of warriors into battle against the city of Attica; Charon, the ferryman of the underworld and the Basilisk, a gargantuan lizard-like monster summoned by the Persians to conquer Greece.

Start at the beginning on PSP with God of War: Chains of Olympus.

At war with the God of War

Opening on the highest cliff top in Greece, God of War originally released on PlayStation 2 is told through a series of flashbacks. It's here in God of War that we discover the origins of Kratos' unstoppable arsenal, the Blades of Chaos; mighty weapons forged in the pits of Hades and handed to him by Ares in a bid to carry out his orders of destruction.

The story begins in Athens where Kratos battles the three-headed monster, Hydra, before embarking on a bloody mission for Athena who wants him to stop Ares and save her city from defeat. In order to do this Kratos must set out on a journey to track down Pandora's Box, which grants any mortal who possesses it, the power to defeat a god. Unfortunately, the box has been locked deep within Pandora's Temple located on the back of the Titan, Cronos, who has been cursed by Zeus to wander the Desert of Lost Souls for all eternity.

As he battle minions and faces some of the most enormous bosses ever conjured on PlayStation, Kratos uncovers mysteries surrounding his true origins and eventually comes face to face with Ares in a bloody battle to the death before being crowned the new God of War by Athena.

Download God of War from PlayStation Store now.

Blood brothers

God of War: Ghost of Sparta on PSP takes place after the events of the blockbuster God of War on PlayStation 2. Kratos has taken his place amongst the Olympians as the God of War. Ares has been crushed, Olympus beckons but Kratos finds himself still haunted by the visions of his mortal past. However, as images of his brother Deimos and mother Callisto flash vividly before his eyes, Kratos feels that these are more than just visions. After all, with the gods, nothing is ever as it seems.

Setting out on a journey to the city of Atlantis in search of the Temple of Poseidon, Kratos encounters the monstrous sea creature Scylla. Having battles the beast, he eventually reaches his mother, lying on a bed, weakened and close to death. It is here at this moment in time that Kratos finally discovers his father's true identity and begins his bloody quest to find his long-lost brother, Deimos.

Uncover the true story behind Kratos' tragic past and his meteoric rise to a seat on Mount Olympus in God of War: Ghost of Sparta on PSP

Defy the Gods and alter the past

In God of War Kratos was but a mortal warrior who set out on a quest to dethrone Ares. Succeeding, he was handed the mantle of God of War by Athena, but his journey didn't end there. In God of War II released on PlayStation 2, Kratos sits atop his throne on Olympus, raging battles with far more brutality than that of his predecessor. Opening on a huge scale battle in Rhodes in which he battles the Colossus of Rhodes, Kratos is stripped of his powers by Zeus because he fears he may suffer the very same fate as Ares.

Slain and cast down to an eternity of torment in Hades Kratos is rescued by Gaia, the mother of the Titans, who offers him a deal. Help the Titans destroy the gods by locating the Sisters of Fate on the Island of Creation to alter his past and crush Zeus. As Kratos embarks on this perilous journey through mythical lands he will come face to face with ancient legends including the magical horse, Pegasus, the Titan Typhon and Prometheus and Atlas, a Titan he'll meet for the second time after his brief appearance in God of War: Chains of Olympus on PSP.

At the end of his journey he will not only alter the course of history and strike fear into the hearts of gods, but also bring forth the Titans from the Great War - where they suffered an agonising defeat - through the power of the Loom of Fate, a device which allows him to travel back in time. And when this tale comes to an end at the base of Mount Olympus another shall begin...

Download God of War II from PlayStation Store today.

The beginning of the end

God of War III on PlayStation 3 sees the Spartan warrior, Kratos, embark on the final chapter of his journey to wreak vengeance on Mount Olympus - the legendary home of the Greek gods.

With a little help from Gaia, the mother of the Titans, Kratos lays siege to Zeus' temple and destroys everything in his path. Together with an impressive army of imposing Titans, his goal is simple - scale the vast mountain, battle Zeus' army of the undead and crush the gods once and for all.

Unleash your vengeance now with God of War III on PlayStation 3.

‘Skyline’: The Early Reviews Are InF1 2010 developer interview

Weekend Essentials 53

SingStar Dance, Crescent Pale Mist and Invizimals: Shadow Zone hit PlayStation this weekend. Read on to find out what all the hype is about.

War machines

One of the most eagerly anticipated games of 2010 has finally arrived on PlayStation 3. It's time to go behind enemy lines as a member of an elite special forces team in Call of Duty: Black Ops, the newest instalment in the blockbuster series and follow up to 2009's smash-hit, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Lock 'n' load and pick up Call of Duty: Black Ops from your nearest store this weekend.

Dance, dance, dance

Packed with groovy floor fillers, SingStar Dance on PlayStation 3 is the ultimate party game for you and up to three of your friends to sing and dance to. Featuring competitive games modes with PlayStation Move support, it's time to bust a move on the dance floor this weekend with SingStar Dance.

Take a trip to Leaf Valley

Grab your PSP this weekend and save Leaf Valley from the evil Funland Corporation in Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley. You'll have to grow crops, raise animals and mine gems to help save the Valley from being turned into an amusement park.

Become a hero this weekend on PSP and pick up Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley.

Join the hunt this weekend

Use your PSP in ways you've never thought possible in the secret world of Invizimals: Shadow Zone - it's bustling with hidden creatures that only your PSP can see. Use your PSP camera to hunt for over 100 new Invizimals - they're hiding in the real world around you - then capture them, customise them, battle with them and trade them with friends.

Stop the mist...

Take on the role of Yunou in the utterly insane Crescent Pale Mist, a hardcore action-platformer with a retina-withering retro look. Tense exploration and frantic combat are on the menu as you try to stop Toxic Pale Mist leaking into the real world.

Get stuck into Crescent Pale Mist at PlayStation Store now.

Wrestle maniacs

Define your own experience in WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2011. The latest in the wrestling series features the most dynamic play yet, as the Road To WrestleMania story mode evolves according to the decisions you make in and out of the ring.

Start down the Road To WrestleMania in WWE Smackdown Vs. RAW 2011, available to download from PlayStation Store now for PSP.

Fighting your corner

Getting beaten up a little too often in The Fight? Then check out eight new expansion packs at PlayStation Store to help you overcome the odds. Whether you need help staying on your feet, boosting your stamina, increasing your confidence, tipping bets in your favour or more, these packs will help you go the distance.

Enjoy a film festival in your living room

Fancy a different kind of entertainment this weekend? MUBI, the new streaming film service on PlayStation 3, is packed with loads of international and independent films for you to discover. There are three titles that you can watch completely free to introduce you to this great new service, namely The Housemaid, Dry Summer and Alice in Wonderland.

Download MUBI now from PlayStation Store, then share your opinions with film fans on Facebook and recommend titles to your PlayStation Network friends.

Are you feeling lucky?

There's nothing like a bit of healthy competition, and we have a few running this weekend. You could get your hands on all sorts of great prizes. Check out the competitions page for more information.

minis monthly 1

Check out the great minis titles that released on PlayStation Store in October 2010.

Fun and snackable, minis have been gracing the screens of PlayStation 3 and PSP for over a year now. Read on to find out which ones hit the virtual shelves of PlayStation Store last month.

Get hooked

Put your fishing skills to the test in the new angling adventure, Flick Fishing. Cast your line in seven different locations and reel in loads of fish using a combination of different bait and techniques.

If you want to show off your fishing finesse, enter one of the 12 fishing tournaments and see if you can catch some exotic species - just make sure you don't lose your prize to a snapped line.

A walk on the wild side

Take on the role of a member of the Mafia in Crime Spree, the new action title from GameShastra.

Collect loads of cash as you drive through the city without getting busted by the cops. Try to collect all your loot within a time limit in Arcade Mode, or just grab as much as possible before the police catch up with you in Survival Mode.

Grab the cash for the notorious godfather and don't get caught.

Don't stop the music

Try your hand at keeping the beat in the musical Boom Beats. Tap the rhythm to a range of different tracks inspired by drum and bass, dub step and house music, all produced by a professional DJ. As you become a musical master, unlock more difficulty modes to put your tempo to the test.

Take down the Scumbags!

Fancy an old school sidescrolling shooter? We've got that covered too. Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags is also available to download from PlayStation Store.

Play as space pilot Ace Armstrong and eliminate the relentless extraterrestrial menaces that lurk just about everywhere. Battle over a dozen flavours of Alien Scumbag and try to defeat five huge bosses to save the world.

A different kind of construction...

You'll have your work cut out for you in the latest minis title from Nordcurrent, Urbanix. Conquer three very different worlds and build on them whilst avoiding attacks from dangerous enemies.

Begin your adventure as a tiny tractor on Earth, before progressing to the North Pole and then the Moon where your mission becomes harder and your enemies more deadly. Delve into 150 levels of building mayhem.

All minis can be downloaded from PlayStation Store. Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting bite-sized titles coming your way soon.

Obsession Confessions: Fright Night

Find out which games have had the official PlayStation community quaking in their boots.

We asked the members of the official PlayStation Forums at community.eu.playstation.com to tell us their favourite spine-tingling game on PlayStation. Check out the ghoulish top ten below.

1. Silent Hill (PS one)
“Hearing the static of the radio that tells you that there are hostile beings nearby that you can't see but feel is priceless.” (blucerkiato, Italy)
“I'd hear that radio everywhere for weeks after playing – a top class game!” (T-e-X, United Kingdom)

2. Dead Space (PlayStation 3)
“The surroundings, the sound, each step I take in this game makes me fear what’s around the next corner.” (davidsantos, Portugal)
“What an adrenaline shot! That spaceship, alone in the dark and so many frights coming from those aliens! There were some moments when you could take my sofa away and I’d have remained in the same position.” (kragny, Spain)
“Dead Space was pretty jumpy in parts and I always felt pretty tense about what was going to come around the next corner. Standing in the lifts always gave me the jitters as well.” (Rooney53, United Kingdom)

3. Project Zero (PlayStation 2)
“If a haunted house is scary, imagine being able to see dead people through a camera... that is even worse.” (Panquecas, Portugal)
“You cannot hide from your enemies since they are ghosts who can go through walls. The only way to defend yourself is using your picture camera, changing to first person mode and not being able to see who is coming from behind.” (Vis_T, Spain)
“I remember all these ghosts that suddenly appear out of the blue and you have to try to capture them with the camera.” (Jackfriz, Italy)

4. Resident Evil 2 (PS one)
“One of the worst experiences with survival horror videogames, not just because I was really young but for the way that one moment things are calm and quiet and then suddenly change for the worse.” (OuterHeaven__, Spain)
“I remember that playing this game, the biggest fright was when the zombie's hands reached through the window in the police station and grabbed me.” (Rympal, Poland)
“For me it is without a doubt the moment when Leon stops in front of a pool of blood, examines it and then raises his head before you see a Licker. I remember quickly putting the disc away in its box.” (Mauno, France

5. Clock Tower 3 (PS2)
“The idea of being an innocent little girl chased by evil murderers without the chance to escape grabbed my attention.” (Lost_rider, Italy)
“That doll still gives me the heebie-jeebies to this day.” (penguin_on_speed, United Kingdom)

6. Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
“Definitely the scariest game I’ve ever played mostly because of the oppressive atmosphere of the whole game.” (Remy2405, Germany)
“Silent Hill 3 scared the living hell out of me... that bit with the bleeding mirror... not nice at all at three o’clock in the morning in darkness with loud headphones on!” (FatBoyJack, United Kingdom)

7. Resident Evil (PS one)
“When everything was quiet, the dog zombies would smash throug the windows from outside and jump at you in the corridor of the mansion when you were least expecting it.” (rialivo, Italy)
“The original Resident Evil for the fact I nearly got the fright of my life the first time the monster came smashing through the window at the start of the game.” (McNeilio, United Kingdom)
“Like many, I jumped when the dogs shattered the windows of the corridor. I dreaded opening a door and falling on two or three hungry zombies while my charger was almost empty.” (bobby526, France)

8. Siren Blood Curse (PS3)
“Claustrophobic locations, killer nurses, mad doctors and the decline of a broken family...” (TheQueenC, Italy)
“Typical Japanese horror stories with graphics done so well that make you feel like you’re really there...” (Sand_Snake, France)

9. Fallout 3 (PS3)
“Fallout 3 was pretty scary because you didn't expect to be scared by it. You could just be walking around the wasteland, and then you’d notice a deathclaw in the distance. You know it’s going to try to attack you, so you have to quickly think about what you’re going to do before it kills you. That’s the kind of horror that I see a lot in the game: you’re presented with a sudden task and you need to resolve it quickly, and it makes you panic – lovely!” (Mattiebo123, United Kingdom)

10 BioShock (PS3)
“There are scenes in this game when you really want to hide underneath your bed.” (kokinhas4, Portugal)
