Breath of Fire 4 is set to heat up PSN in August

Fans of the PS1 classic Breath of Fire 4 can breathe a sigh of relief, or fire, or fiery relief, or reliefery fire, or... never mind.

Breath of Fire 4 is scheduled to launch August 16 on PSN in the United States, according to a forum post from Capcom Senior VP Christian Svensson. Svensson also revealed that Breath of Fire PSN avatars will be available for purchase on launch day, "to celebrate," probably because fireworks would be too predictable.

10 of the Best: Platinum trophies

This website requires Flash Player 7 or higher. It looks like you do not have this installed. Visit the Adobe website to download the latest version of player.. JavaScript needs to be enabled on your PC in order for you to view this content. Please enable JavaScript and try again. Calling all hoarders! Here's a rundown of ten of the most satisfying platinum trophies to hunt on PlayStation 3. Great games keep you coming back for more – and the best trophies on PlayStation 3 extend these experiences even further. The Holy Grail for many gamers is the platinum trophy, the shimmering award that proves you've collected all other trophies in a game. In a new regular feature, we'll be asking you to tell us about your most satisfying platinum trophies. Look out for the new Trophy Cabinet thread in the official PlayStation Forums at community.eu.playstation.com, and tell us the game, how challenging you found the path to platinum and how you managed it. Join the hunt before 21 July 2011, when we'll publish the best suggestions and advice on eu.playstation.com. Until then, here are ten classic platinum trophies to get you started. inFamous 2 It pays to be both good and bad in inFamous 2. Trophies are awarded to you according to your karma level, a great reason to play through this electric adventure at least twice: once as a hero and once as a heartless wrecking ball. Plus, the vibrant city of New Marais hides hundreds of secrets. Rounding these up will send you on your way to a hugely enjoyable platinum trophy. Killzone 3 Destroying enemy drop ships on a burning highway, blowing away chasing tanks in a white-knuckle pursuit, sneaking past elite Helghast troops in a claustrophobic jungle... The best trophies in Killzone 3 are the ones which get your heart rattling round your ribcage – and with a blend of frantic online multiplayer gauntlets and hidden, story-related challenges to master on your way to platinum, your pulse rate never drops into double digits. Mass Effect 2 Most of the trophies in this interstellar saga are actually hard to miss, being awarded as you complete certain chapters in the vast story. Some, however, are fiendish, like the Insanity trophy, awarded for completing the game on the difficulty setting of the same name. It's one of the most talked about platinum trophy hunts in the official PlayStation Community, being both achievable and highly challenging at the same time. Dead Space 2 There's so much going on in the Sprawl space station that trophy hunting might be the least of your worries. And it's meant to be – most trophies have you racking up inventive kills or scanning the impressive, oppressive environment for secrets, switching the pace from all-out survival to one of exploration. Coming back on an easier difficulty setting helps notch up many of these trophies – providing you can bear to return to Sprawl. LittleBigPlanet 2 Sackboy's world isn't just full of wonderful gizmos and random objects. There's a lengthy list of trophies to round up, and although LittleBigPlanet 2 might be a cheery world of creative adventure, these rewards aren't won easily. To snap up that elusive platinum, you'll have to push Sackboy to the limit. Levels must be aced, leader boards scaled and your imagination engaged in top gear to succeed.   Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Scramble through the incredible world depicted in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and not only is your breath taken away, but your reflexes and aim are improved. With many of the trophies that lead to platinum requiring precise shooting and fighting, this is actually a trail that gets easier the more you play. Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition Fear is overcome in this classic chiller by achieving platinum trophy status. Almost half of the trophies come from completing story chapters, and the difficulty is really ratcheted up when you blaze a trail through the game on the Professional setting. Luckily, the game is split into manageable episodes so you can jump straight into areas where you might have missed something. Fallout 3 Not only is the sprawling, nuclear wilderness of Fallout 3 one of the eeriest on PlayStation 3, but its trophies come with cheeky artwork of the game's iconic Vault Boy. Reaching the hallowed platinum status means thinking hard about every choice you make, as the wrong decision can block a trophy-yielding mission later on. There's a huge amount of background information on each mission however, so clues to progress are never hard to find. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Trophy hunting doesn't get much faster than in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, a game which mixes shattering the speed limit with climbing the social ladder. Your platinum pursuit will take in online achievements like sharing cool photos of your chases with friends, while your bravery at speeds of close to 200 miles per hour will be pushed to the brink in police supercars. Red Dead Redemption The stakes are high on the platinum trophy trail in this dusty, widescreen epic. Whether it's a poker game, a brawl with a grizzly bear or a showdown at high noon, Red Dead Redemption packs in some of the riskiest trophies around. Thankfully, careful saving prior to attempting each trophy will safeguard against any fatal errors. Head to community.eu.playstation.com and share your platinum trophy advice with the PlayStation Community before 21 July 2011. We'll then publish the best suggestions here on eu.playstation.com.

Madden NFL 12 demo coming August 9, pits Bears against Packers

Whether you're a diehard Green Bay Packers or Chicago Bears fan, you've probably had last year's NFC Championship game running through your mind on repeat, refilling you with the thrill of victory or agony of defeat, respectively. Today, EA Sports announced that you'll be able to have a hand in the proceedings August 9, when the Madden NFL 12 demo arrives on Xbox Live and PSN, giving you a 20-minute, four-quarter recreation of the Packers-won contest.

The rosters of each team will be, of course, a tad outdated thanks to the very, very recent settling of the NFL lockout. EA Sports confirmed on Twitter that a launch day update will reflect the free agent changes that happen over the course of this week. Until then: Just relive that thrill/agony in its purest form.

Rumor: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D to be released in 2012

Rumors are circulating that the 3DS version of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will be released in 2012. Kotaku Australia reports that Konami confirmed the news directly, though the publisher provided no further information other than a 2012 release date.

When approached for comment, Konami informed Joystiq that no North American launch date has been announced. At the Tokyo Game Show last year, Hideo Kojima announced a 2011 release for the game. If this latest news is true, it would seem the date applied only to Japan.

Hands on: EA SPORTS FIFA 12

This website requires Flash Player 7 or higher. It looks like you do not have this installed. Visit the Adobe website to download the latest version of player.. JavaScript needs to be enabled on your PC in order for you to view this content. Please enable JavaScript and try again. What does the latest version of EA SPORTS' beautiful game feel like to play? The man in charge explains. Barcelona's footballing geniuses Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez spring to mind when David Rutter, producer of EA SPORTS FIFA 12 on PlayStation 3, tells eu.playstation.com of a "holy trinity". In fact, he's talking about the standout enhancements made to this year's edition of the majestic football series. Here, we find out how these new features shape the game. Collision courses Imagine Arjen Robben is streaking down the wing and that you lurk in wait with a stocky defender such as Carlos Puyol. The angle and speed at which you intercept are crucial to determining where the ball – and Robben – ends up, thanks to the game's new Player Impact Engine.  As Rutter says: "When players collide, what happens on-screen is almost exactly what would occur in real life. We have a limitless variety of collision outcomes; they're entirely based on how you make contact with another player." Sharp timing could see Puyol surgically slice the ball from Robben's toes in the blink of an eye. Wait a millisecond longer and you could send the Dutch winger spinning through the air. Crackling excitement comes from this "unpredictable physicality", where a player's strength doesn't necessarily guarantee winning the ball. Dangerous dribbling "Touch, touch, touch and a little movement", that's how Rutter sums up dribbling in previous games. In EA SPORTS FIFA 12, you have more direct control over the ball. Your player can shield and move with the ball more effectively, letting you weigh up the options before shuttling it on to another player. "High fidelity control is what we're aiming for," says Rutter. "You can almost completely envelop the ball, containing it and relieving pressure before distributing it." Precision Dribbling varies the pace of a match enormously. Desperate defence flows into slick, measured build-up play thanks to improved control and your players having a clearer idea of where teammates are. In short, your flair and vision are given the stage to flourish. Roaming roadblocks Tactical Defending radically shakes up how you'll approach EA SPORTS FIFA 12. "We used to launch defenders at the opposition like homing missiles and we didn't think that felt like real football," Rutter explains. "Now we want to focus on containing the attacking player, on tracking him until he is running down a blind alley." What does this mean? There's no "autopilot football". You must think about defending as much as attacking, only pressing the tackle button when you're sure it will work. "In this way," Rutter reveals, "your own intelligence and footballing philosophy have more influence in the game. "We never worry about coming up with new features. It's fitting them all into one game that's the challenge," Rutter confides. Keep an eye on eu.playstation.com and PlayStation.Blog at blog.eu.playstation.com to see what else EA SPORTS FIFA 12 has in store on PS3.

PopCap games to be bundled with Sony Ericsson phones in Europe

PopCap and Sony Ericsson today announced an agreement that will finally bring the casual developer's titles to Android devices in Europe. The agreement will bring them to exactly two of Sony's platforms, the Xperia Mini and the Xperia Mini Pro, as they roll out this summer.

Three of PopCap's titles will be pre-loaded onto the devices, specifically the full version of Chuzzle and trial versions of Plants vs. Zombies and Peggle. In the press release detailing the agreement, PopCap's Giordano Bruno Contestabile stated, "We are delighted to partner with Sony Ericsson to fulfill our promise to Android users and bring PopCap's hit mobile games to an ever-widening base of smartphone users." Presumably, PopCap's titles will spread to more than two of Sony's phones in the future.

JavaScript needs to be enabled on your PC in order for you to view this content. Please enable JavaScript and try again. Wander through the digital delights of The Studio this month – only on PlayStation 3 and PSP. Psychedelic sensations available now Surreal, playful and inspiring: just some of the ways to describe the latest additions to The Studio, the digital art gallery for your PlayStation 3 and PSP. Artwork with a truly international flavour has joined the exciting line-up of themes available to download from PlayStation Store this month. In Paris artist Blind Salida's own words, "I like to create explosions, lines or movements within colourful, surrealist designs". He's certainly managed that with Chemical Colours to Wild Machine, ready to download now. It's a dynamic theme for your PS3 that sees a metallic mass of pipework spattered with vibrant shapes and looping trails of colour, making your television screen pop and fizz with life. "You come from another galaxy", say street art collective 123Klan if you haven't heard of them. If you're familiar with the alleys of their Montreal stomping ground, then you might have seen their brash, confident tags adorning the walls. Their Le Theme is out now, a background so fresh you'll want to make sure you don't get spray paint all over your PS3 system. Unnerving and unforgettable is the Hungry Eyes theme for PS3, the work of Oslo illustrator Kristian Hammerstad. Solid colour blocks and scratchy inks make his ouput look as though it's leapt from the pages of a particularly dark graphic novel – and his piece for The Studio is a dramatic twist on the eyes that follow you around the room. Later in the month From 6 July 2011, three decidedly dream-like themes will be available to download from The Studio. If You Go Down to the Woods is a light-hearted, dynamic theme depicting four shambling characters in a dusky forest from artist Pete Fowler, famed for his off-kilter designs for Welsh band Super Furry Animals. Similar ideas continue with Tom Sewell's Psychedelic Yawn, while UK-based design outfit Maharishi camouflage your XMB (XrossMediaBar) with wisps of cloud and twisted vegetation in Maharishi Hex.   Cartoon woodgrain design comes courtesy of Richard Woods. The London artist has been commissioned by design houses all over the world, and his signature piece, Logo, makes its debut in The Studio from 13 July 2011. It's joined by work from Chicago doodler Cody Hudson, whose Cosmic Pencil dynamic theme scribbles geometric shapes all over your screen, while you can go face-to-face with the imposing, mystical Buddhas from Hydro 74. Head to The Studio via PlayStation Store and lose yourself in some of the sharpest downloadable designs around. For all the latest on the digital gallery, don't forget to check eu.playstation.com/thestudio.

Arkham City collector's edition details sneak past the Batman

With a new movie and video game finishing development and the recent ego-crushing defeat at the box office by a teenage boy and his stick, Batman must be pretty busy. Busy enough to let listings for the Batman: Arkham City collector's edition be posted, unannounced and without violent yet non-lethal retribution.

GameStop and Best Buy both have the collector's edition priced at $99.99, and Best Buy is feeling extra bold with a description of its contents: A "premium" statue made by Kotobukiya, an art book, Gotham Knight animated material and early access to DLC. The collector's edition is listed for Xbox 360 and PS3, and is set to be released October 18 with the standard edition on both consoles and PC, but only if Batman decides to let this little misunderstanding slide.

As Sonic the Hedgehog enters his third decade, games industry insiders tell eu.playstation.com what he means to them. Sonic Generations on PlayStation 3 celebrates 20 years of SEGA icon Sonic the Hedgehog by cherry-picking some of his finest moments and revisiting them in dazzling High Definition. Here, eu.playstation.com asks those most closely involved with creating video games to choose their highlights of a series that has been blazing a blue trail since 23 June 1991. "Collecting those rings. Ting, ting, ting! And then rushing into a badnik and losing them all. Man that was frustrating – but then the next second you'd be off again, rounding them up." Randy Varnell, producer, Gearbox Software "My lasting memory of Sonic is walking down the street past a small games store, and seeing Sonic the Hedgehog running on a Mega Drive for the first time. I thought: wow! Graphics will never, ever get any better than this!" John McLaughlin, producer, XDev Studio Liverpool "Sonic games were where you wanted to go for a holiday. The Green Hill Zone, palm trees, blue skies, sunny music – it was my happy place. And now look at me, spending all my time creating the perfect assassination in Hitman: Absolution. I think there's definitely a link there." Christian Elverdam, gameplay director, IO Interactive "Sonic is an incredibly important game to me. The very first Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive arrived just a few months after I started working in the games industry, on console titles. I remember the day the Mega Drive came out in the UK. I went straight to my local games store and bought one. It was the Sonic bundle, so I came back to the office and – because it was research – I fired it up and fell in love with the richness of the environment, the beauty of the graphics and the sound. "The playability of the game, too, the way it was what we at Naughty Dog call 'on the button': immediately responsive controls, a pure, deep and rich control system that fed into this amazingly kinetic and interesting game. It really changed my perception of video games and inspired me to keep trying to rock that same groove in everything that I've done ever since." Richard Lemarchand, co-lead designer, Naughty Dog "For me I still come back to the opening level of the very first game, the loop the loops, Green Hill Zone and high points like that. Something that sticks in my head with Sonic is that whenever he used to drown – and it happened a lot because I wasn't very good – I always used to feel bad. That idea of his little gasps under water, tiny bubbles rising to the surface. Look at that – emotion even back then! It has probably influenced Lara Croft's new watery world [in Tomb Raider]." Noah Hughes, creative director, Crystal Dynamics "Oh my, now we're going back. I can't even remember the first time I played a Sonic game, he's just always been there – on my games shelf, in my console and still doing the business." Gareth Edmondson, studio director, Ubisoft Reflections "From an artist's point of view, I think it's such a striking series. Bold colours and lots of greens and blues all moving across the screen in a blur. It was kind of pure. Looking back it feels like a turning point. Games could be beautiful, challenging, fast and accessible, all at the same time. When a game combines all these features, then it is called a classic." Jonathan Jacques-BelletĂȘte, art director, Eidos Montreal "The Sonic CD soundtrack still stands out for me. It was just an epic piece of music at the time, before the days of flashy cutscenes in games, and for me it really stands out." Gavin Russell, producer, London Studio "Playing it and trying desperately to get all of the gold rings. The game was so fast that you'd get to the end of the level and realise you missed two of them – so you had to go back and do it all over again. I'd just play it over and over to get every last one." John Paquette, writer, Insomniac Games "The memory for me is always Sonic tapping his foot. You put the controller down and Sonic tapped his foot while he waited for you. It was the equivalent of my being a kid and my mother would be like, 'You don't understand when we saw Gone With the Wind for the first time and Clark Gable said, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn," it was the first time we heard someone curse in a movie!' It was the same thing. "When a character took on a life of his own and actually expressed personality like that, it might have seemed insignificant, yet I think it played a big part in evolving video games into the art form and entertainment medium they are today." David Jaffe, co-director, Eat Sleep Play "When I was at school my classmate had a Mega Drive and so I used to go round to his house to play Sonic. It represents to me a very fast, clean idea of gameplay. It almost gives you hope, in a way. Joy and hope." Sony's Tim Schaaff: PSN outage was a 'great learning experience'

We suppose that after having your 77 million-user-strong gaming and shopping network shut down for close to six weeks, you learn how to see the silver lining on even the darkest clouds. For instance, Sony Network Entertainment president Tim Schaaff recently spoke at the GamesBeat 2011 conference about the PSN downtime, and said Sony is "very pleasantly surprised by the experience," explaining that, "the customers have all come back, and network performance is better than ever, sales are better than ever." Though the downtime cost Sony an estimated $171 million, Schaaff added, "It's been a great experience," and later clarifying, "I would not like to do it again.

One time was enough. Great learning experience." We agree! Without the ability to play games online on our PS3s for a month and a half, we had time to learn all kinds of stuff, like rollerblading, flying a kite, and some very basic ukulele techniques.

Young Brit claims GT Academy glory

JavaScript needs to be enabled on your PC in order for you to view this content. Please enable JavaScript and try again. Nineteen-year-old Jann Mardenborough races to the finish line to claim the GT Academy 2011 title. Last week Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix, hosted the 2011 GT Academy Race Camp. From a starting grid of over 90,000 Gran Turismo 5 players, and following a series of live Territory Finals, 12 finalists descended on the iconic British racetrack for a gruelling programme of physical contests, media interviews and real-life driving tests. Under the watchful eye of head judge and four-time Formula One winner Eddie Irvine, Mardenborough took the chequered flag in a 20-minute race on Silverstone's national circuit. Adding the race win to his earlier pole position, Mardenborough was a worthy winner and will now begin an intensive Driver Development Programme and compete in a number of UK national races to enable him to qualify for an international race licence. In January 2012, he will line up on the grid of the Dubai 24 Hour race in a Nissan 370Z GT4 car – the ultimate prize in what has become the ultimate racing competition since it began in 2008. "I am really buzzing, ecstatic," said a jubilant Jann. "This competition is going to change my life massively. This whole experience has been amazing and I would like to thank everyone involved, especially PlayStation and Nissan." Eddie Irvine said: "I have been surprised by this experience. When I arrived, I saw there was some work to do, but the six that made it through to the final day did so because they reacted positively and showed some real grit and determination. "Jann did a great job throughout and the final decision turned out to be fairly straightforward. He has been given an amazing opportunity by PlayStation and Nissan, but the hard work has only just begun for him. Even with this head start, making a career in racing is tough and he'll have to have talent, determination and luck in pretty much equal measure if he is to make it. I'll keep an eye on him and hope he doesn't let me down." Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues trailer is a big ol' pile of crazy

We're pretty sure that if, before sundown, dogs learned to talk and fountains of chocolate fondant began springing from the ground, the Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues DLC trailer posted above would still be the craziest thing we've seen today.

Sony must support indie developers, says Yoshida

Speaking to Develop Online, Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studio President Shuhei Yoshida said that the gaming megalith sees value in the continuously expanding world of indie development, and that supporting those developers is the key to industry growth. "We have to support those smaller teams," he said.

"Without doing so, the whole industry will stall, in terms of innovation." Yoshida thinks Sony's forthcoming PS Vita will serve as a good platform for indie developers currently subsisting in the mobile-phone universe, citing the handheld's capacitive touch-screen and AR capabilities as an entry-level gateway for development on the platform. He also added that the Vita's development kit has been specifically engineered with affordability in mind, and that the system is "small and light and easy for developers to handle." With smartphones gobbling up increasingly larger slices of the mobile gaming pie, Sony seems to be positioning itself as the indie-friendly option for mobile developers looking to enter the world of dedicated gaming devices.
