minis FAQ

Everything you need to know about a new category of PSP content available from PlayStation Store.

What is minis?

It's a category on PlayStation Store that contains smaller, snackable games for PSP that are quick to download, easy to pick up and play and perfectly suited to gaming on the go.

How long do the games take to download?

This will vary depending on the title and is largely dependent on your Internet connection. However, minis have a maximum file size of 100MB, so downloads should not take long at all.

How much will they cost?

Like much of the content on PlayStation Store, pricing is determined by the publisher and may vary, although it will be in keeping with the ethos of smaller, accessible content.

How regularly will new games be added?

There are around 15 titles available at launch, with approximately 50 set to arrive by the end of 2009. The rate and regularity of updates going forward is, once again, largely dependant on publishers.

Will the section include any recognisable titles?

Well-known classics, such as Tetris, available from launch, as well as brand new games and titles seen on other platforms, such as mobile phones.

Will we ever see user-generated content released via minis?

One of the factors making minis possible is a recent reduction in PSP development costs. This opens up the platform to smaller development teams; however, these teams are still made up of professional game developers.

Will minis be available on all PSP systems?

Yes, minis is launching alongside PSPgo and is available on all PSP systems, providing you have a Memory Stick, access to a Wireless Internet connection and a PlayStation Network account.

ModNation Racers first impressions

You've never been behind the wheel like this - take your imagination for a spin in one of the most customisable racing games ever made.

How do you like your kart racing? In this case, the question isn't about whether you like it at a particular speed, the type of vehicles, weapons or anything like that. It's about how you like your vehicle and driver to look, how you want the tracks to take shape by your own hand. Here, ModNation Racers asks all these questions- and you provide as many answers as you want...

Start your imagination...

ModNation Racers is built for you, for you to build. With the philosophy of creative gaming at its core, the racing game is all about... you. Starting off in a hub area, you're free to drive your default character and car around to get a feel of things.

By ducking into the Creation Station garage you have the option to take advantage of ModNation Racers' tools. Take your toy styled driver, for example. Already looking quite cute, here you can change its colour, give it a certain nose, mouth, eyes, ears and voice, equip it with facial/head hair, deck it out in all types of clothing (although the driver will sometimes show embarrassment if it's an outfit they don't like) and a snappy range of accessories and custom made decals to match.

Which means if you want your driver to take the style of a Frankenstein's monster gone slightly wrong, then you can. Or if you prefer a glove wearing, night vision goggles rocking cat-eared cutey, then that's cool too. Something in-between or entirely different? Why not...

Driven

You'll want to cast your gaze over the kart you'll be driving, next. Well there's just as much tinkering to be had on that front, whether you decide to go for a truck, jeep, sports car, buggy, even a fire engine style racer. Engines, suspension, wheels, seats and steering wheels are just the start. Fancy some hood ornaments or accessories? And that's not even going into paintwork, decals and the ability to fine-tune your drift/handling preference and whether you prefer speed over acceleration or a carefully honed balance.

Then there are the tracks. With a batch of simple and accessible tools that the game designers used to make the pre-made courses, you can get to work on creating the track you've always wanted to race on. Various terrain from Jungle to Seaside can be selected, which you can then sculpt and form, switch the time of day, add environment details, and lay the shape of the track before you give it a test.

Your creation can be big, wide and winding, with slopes and troughs through a sunset cityscape, or just a nice jaunt around a dark and hilly plain - all easily and quickly created. There are lots of pre-made tracks to take inspiration from, and you can share your designs, drivers and cars with the world on PlayStation Network, meaning there's always a fresh challenge around the corner that you can tweak, rate and enjoy.

Clocking up the miles

Even outside of its comprehensive modification and sharing options, the classic karting action has plenty to keep you occupied, with a story campaign mode to compliment the single and multiplayer (on and offline) features, including challenges and leaderboards.

ModNation Racers is a garage full of fun, wrapped up in an inexhaustible package - and its glossy surface has only just been scratched. Keep checking eu.playstation.com for the next lap of this deep and fast paced racing title.

Choose your destiny

Master hundreds of moves, wield mighty weapons and unleash the wrath of Kratos, the God Of War, in SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, only on PSP!

In the end, there can only be chaos

The mighty SoulCalibur has returned once more, only this time it's making its PSP debut in an exclusive addition to the worldwide smash hit beat-‘em-up series that conquered arcades and saw Darth Vader rule the SoulCalibur universe in last year's PS3 brawler, SoulCalibur 4. Players are given the chance to test their fighting skills using a whopping 28 characters, each one possessing an array of devastating moves alongside huge swords, staffs and blades.

Most of the series regulars return for another bout of brawling including Astaroth and Siegfried, alongside two brand new characters exclusive to PSP. Dampierre, the first of the new fighters, is a self-proclaimed genius conman that travels the world and plays up in the ring. During fights he feigns injuries before sneakily attacking opponents with a pair of hidden daggers cleverly concealed on both of his arms.

The other is someone who should be familiar to all PlayStation fans: God Of War's Kratos, the legendary Spartan Warrior who took down Ares and assumed his throne and mantle. Equipped with the Blades of Chaos, Kratos possesses deadly long range attacks and brutal and powerful short range stabs. For fans of the God Of War series, Broken Destiny offers up an entirely new way to take control of hulking slayer, Kratos.

Embark on a quest for survival

There are a number of match options available from the outset such as Quick Match, which allows you to dive straight into a battle with an opponent to get used to the control system. Trial Mode sees you take on a number of challenges ranging from the simple ones such as Trial Of Attack, where you must amass points by chaining attacks together. It's here that mastering Broken Destiny's huge wealth of combo attacks comes into play.

Trial Of Defence sees players once again chaining various attacks, only this time they must be performed once you have successfully blocked an opponent's attack. The final Trial mode is Endless Trial, where you face a limitless number of enemies once after another with the sole goal of obtaining the highest score possible before your character is defeated.

The main mode in Broken Destiny is The Gauntlet, where you are tasked with taking on a journey in a story-driven mission that sees you follow Hilde around the world in search of medicine for her ill father. Each mission in The Gauntlet is comprised of objectives such as blocking a series of attacks before countering or performing certain moves in order to progress.

Design a fighter

Packing in stunning graphics that showcase the power of PSP, Broken Destiny also allows players to create their own character just as they did in SoulCalibur 4. You can either create a totally original fighter or customise one of the existing fighters on the roster.

Choosing from either a male of female character you can select from a series of preset fighting styles. Once a style is chosen, you can then either randomise your fighter's equipment set or choose it yourself from a series of options. These include everything from chain mail, headbands, gloves, footwear and even horns.

When happy with this, you can then adjust the size of your fighter's equipment, change the colour, select voice pitch, haircut style and face shape. The final stage in the deep character creation is Style and Weapon where you can choose from the huge range of weapons the game's character's have at their disposal before finalising their character design and heading into battle.

Put your moves to the test

Alongside the epic storyline and multiple modes, Broken Destiny also features Ad Hoc Mode, which lets players face off against each other in any of the arenas available in the game using either characters from the game or their own customised fighter. You can test your skills against anyone else who also owns a copy of SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, offering up endless hours of multiplayer fun for beat-‘em-up fans and any newcomers to the hugely popular fighting series.

DiRT 2 developer interview

Let Codemasters take you on a ride with DiRT 2 as its Chief Game Designer Matt Horsman puts you in the driver's seat.

Can you give a rundown on what DiRT 2 is and about?

DiRT2 is the sequel to the acclaimed best-selling off road racer of 2007, DiRT. The game takes players on a thrilling off road world tour, taking in a wide variety of race styles through exotic real-world locations including Morocco, Malaysia, China and the Baja desert.

What makes DiRT 2 different from other racing games?

Our greatest achievement is being able to create a fun and exhilarating racing experience that is steeped in realism and modern day relevance.

Integrating real brands such as Monster Energy and DC Shoes to sponsor our in-game events such as the Rallycross events at London Battersea and including the X Games, where you can compete against the latest off road driving superstars such as Ken Block and Travis Pastrana makes DiRT 2 the closest thing you can have to a real life off road racing experience.

How much input did Ken Block and other professional drivers have in the game?

Ken Block has visited the studio multiple times, and has given us feedback throughout the project as we have sent Ken versions of the game to play at home.

He has been a great help not only on the handling, as you would expect, but also the track design and the overall feel to make sure that when playing the game the entire experience is a realistic portrayal of life on the road, living the life of an extreme sports superstar.

With the development team's vast experience in the genre, what do you feel you had to do new this time around?

We spent a lot of time evaluating DiRT once it came out in 2007, both researching and obtaining feedback on what our fan-base really thought about DiRT and how we could improve it.

The two things on the top of the list were improved car handling and a more in-depth multiplayer experience. I am happy to say, two years on, that we have nailed both areas with a new handling system, allowing for real driving techniques where players can utilise weight shift to pull off amazing Scandinavian flicks, and the list of multiplayer features is almost endless.

The team have done a fantastic job; I couldn't ask any more of them.

How do you intend to use PlayStation Network in your plans for expanding DiRT 2?

We have made sure that our online community on PlayStation Network will be looked after once the game has been released. We have special admin controls at Codemasters HQ which will allow us to change the online experience once we have received feedback from our fans.

What are the hallmarks of a good rally game?

Rally plays a big part in the DiRT 2 experience, and as a sport it's renowned for being one of the hardest motorsports in the world. It's highly dangerous and exhausting and DiRT 2 reflects this. It's the only racing game I have experienced where the concentration needed is so high that you can't even blink, and you feel exhausted after completing a couple of rally stages, as you know one little mistake and you're toast.

What makes a good DiRT 2 soundtrack?

DiRT 2 is set in a festival racing experience in the world of extreme sports, so we needed to select music that related to this perfectly. We knew that the music would play an important role in creating the atmosphere between races as the player chills out in their RV and to build up the anticipation before a race. Therefore we put a higher level of effort in this area than any previous game we have created.

The result is a soundtrack that is not only relevant to today's music scene with tracks from great bands such as Queens of the Stone Age and Ladyhawke, but one that is globally appealing and fits perfectly with DiRT 2.

Were there any strange stories or anecdotes which emerged in the development of the game?

One of the funniest was right at the start; the design team were pushing for extreme locations to feature in the game, rather than the more traditional routes. This was tamed down a little to make sure all the locations in the game could feature in a real life event. So the first location we settled on was the Croatian Riviera with its smooth gravel, beautiful vistas and most importantly, tight twisty roads suitable for a rally stage.

However when the art team visited the location we had quite an angry phone call from them in Croatia, as we found out that they could not walk more than three feet from the road edge as the area is covered in land mines! So the designers, in a way, got their extreme location after all.

What do you want people to come away with once they've played the game?

As with any game I create I want people to come away with large smiles on their faces and a feeling of money well spent, and of course a thirst for a sequel!

Any final comments to say about DiRT 2?

If you want to live the life of a modern off road star and have the experience of playing an action-packed racing game, our game is the one you want. We've had a lot of fun making it, and I think that shows in the actual final product. We're hoping people are going to see that when they can get their hands on the demo.

Welcome to the madhouse

Step behind the walls of Arkham in Batman Arkham Asylum on PS3.

Trap the Bat

Already a Guinness World Record breaker (most successful superhero videogame of all time), Batman Arkham Asylum is a superbly executed, deftly presented trip into the mind of DC Comics' most famed character, and the walls and halls of Gotham City's most notorious building - Arkham Asylum. With a story penned by acclaimed comic book scribe and TV writer, Paul Dini, the game opens with the Dark Knight delivering his arch nemesis The Joker into the hands of the warden of Arkham, before realizing only too late that something is not right, and the Clown Prince of Crime sets in motion his master plan - control Arkham, unleash the inmates and rid the city of the Batman.

Unleash the villains

Naturally, as Batman you're not going to allow that to happen, so you're required to use all your detective prowess and arsenal of bat gadgets and martial arts skills to crush The Joker's army of crazed lunatics, while facing down some of the comic universe's most memorable and vicious inmates including Killer Croc, Bane, Poison Ivy and Scarecrow, who is utilized brilliantly at intervals during the game in nightmarish levels that add extra depth to both the dark and twisting storyline as well as exploring the character of Batman himself.

Fans of The Riddler will have their work cut out for them exploring the huge map littered with a wealth of bonus objectives set out by the villain. By completing these challenges, players can then unlock vast amounts of bonus us content as well as accumulating a hefty Trophy collection before the game's end. Of course, should you choose to play through the storyline first, then the opportunity to begin again and hunt down the Riddler clues makes for superb replayability.

Free flow fighting

To begin with, Batman has a number of simple to perform moves including attack and counter, each one mapped to a single button on the Wireless Controller. Once a battle starts, you're encouraged to keep the fight flowing using the game's Freeflow Combat system which allows you to chain moves together seamlessly using both buttons, or mix it up a little with ground takedowns, throws and stuns. It's an incredibly robust fighting system that is made all the more enjoyable to perform through its intuitiveness. Be you a seasoned gamer, or someone new to the genre, you'll be fighting and feeling just like the Batman in a matter of minutes.

The more moves you chain together, the more points you are awarded, which in turn are tallied up as points for you to use as upgrade store purchases, including new armor, dual wielding Batarangs, explosives, enhanced takedowns and more powerful moves, all of which will help turn you into the ultimate crime fighter by the time you reach the final showdown with the maniacal Joker.

Fighting skills alone won't save you in Arkham Asylum, the ability to detect and follow up on clues is an essential part of the gameplay, requiring to scan scenes for evidence such alcohol in the air or remnants of tobacco, which you then need to follow through the hallways, air vents and buildings of Arkham in order to track down your enemy, or in some cases, a close ally who has been kidnapped by one of the inmates.

Joke's on you

In switching to Detective Vision Batman is also able to detect enemies from afar, highlighting the danger each one poses to him. If they are armed, then they need to be taken down first and stealthily using Batman's ability to swing from the rafter, sneak and hang from gargoyles before dropping down to snatch an unsuspecting enemy from their patrol.

Once you have survived the walls of Arkham there is also a wealth of additional material open to you in the form of the Challenge Rooms, which require you to complete goals such as taking down waves of enemies using your fighting skills or silent and stealthy takedowns. With the addition of The Joker as an exclusive downloadable character for you to play through the Challenge rooms as, there's enough Batmania here to keep fans of the comic and newcomers engrossed for many a dark night to come.

Enter the asylum, but you have been warned...

C&C Red Alert 3: Commander’s Challenge developer interview

The power is in your hands with Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander’s Challenge - find out how with the game's producer, Wes Eckhart.

Can you provide a brief run-down about the game and what it's about?

Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge is a fun and tactical experience. Players start out as a Futuretech battlefield commander with access to the three factions from Red Alert 3: Allies, Soviets, and Empire of the Rising Sun. The player then chooses a battle from our global map. Once the player completes that battle, new missions and new units are unlocked.

While the main story path of the game is 13 missions, the full scope of Commander's Challenge is played across 50 sprawling engagements. The order in which you play these missions, and the faction that you choose for each mission, can make all the difference. Better yet, the development team recorded their par times for each mission, giving players the option to try and beat each mission faster than the team here.

How does Commander's Challenge differ from other real time strategy (RTS) games?

The light-hearted nature of the Red Alert 3 universe coupled with highly specialised scenarios make Commander's Challenge a unique RTS experience. Strange and wonderful units like the Soviet Mortar Cycle and the Empire's transforming flying head of death, the Giga Fortress, become focal points for the gameplay. Humorous unit responses and fantastic, over the top powers give the game a playful feel. Topping it off, our live action cinematics feature the opposing generals taunting you at every step of the way.

What sort of person does Commander's Challenge appeal to?

Commander's Challenge was designed to welcome players new to the RTS genre, as well as those who are fans of the Red Alert 3 experience. We also included a tutorial to help get everyone up to speed. The difficulty ramp is easy to get new players interested in the game. As more missions and units are unlocked, players will find they can complete the challenges in many different ways. Experienced Red Alert 3 players will enjoy attempting to beat the par times for each mission, and earning some of the more elusive trophies.

What kind of scenarios can you play?

Each mission in Commander's Challenge is specialised. These scenarios range from bruising tank-only battles, to fighting amidst falling satellites, to facing off against your opponent with shrunken units. An especially terrifying mission takes place on a floating platform. Backed into a corner, you must face an army of Yuriko clones - the Empire's psychic school-girl commando!

What sort of stories/anecdotes came up in the making of the game from having to work with celebrity commanders such as retired American wrestler Ric Flair?

The Nature Boy himself, Ric Flair. He was amazing to work with. Ric absolutely loved the idea of Commander Hill, the character he played. Everyone on set had a great time working with him. I think my favourite moment is when he wore his famous wrestling robe, we all had a good laugh. As a result a little bit of Flair made its way into the character. Woooooo!

What's been the funniest thing to happen in the development of a game which has such a very tongue-in-cheek nature?

The unit responses in the game continue to be an endless source of amusement. While we're deep in development we're used to playing the game with placeholder or no sound at all. When you select a unit they attack, but they don't say anything interesting. Our incredible audio team then begins to add the unit responses, and that's when the tone of the game changes. The first time we heard the final version of the Allied Cryo-Legionnaire the laughter carried throughout the development floor. The dialogue and the actor's delivery were spot on!

What's the most enjoyable part of Commander's Challenge?

I really enjoy the strategic element to figuring out which mission to play first. As more and more missions get unlocked, some are easier to beat than others... depending on what units you've unlocked. It becomes a game of determining which mission to play to get the unit you want to beat the next mission: a game within a game.

What tips do you have for budding commanders?

Three tips for the new player and veteran alike:

Air power is awesome. Units like the Soviet Twinblade and the Empire's Striker-VX Chopper can really make the difference against ground units.

Use the Steel Ronin. The Empire's new Anti-Armour robot is excellent against Allied and Soviet armour. If you're looking at the need to fight a tough ground mission, the Steel Ronin can help you achieve victory.

Don't get bogged down on one mission. Because there are so many missions to choose from, and different units are unlocked with each mission, don't get stuck playing one difficult mission. Instead, play a few other missions and unlock their units. You will often find those new units can help you get passed that troublesome enemy commander.
