Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time first impressions

A cracking time is to be had with the new Ratchet & Clank adventure - get a glimpse of the future, now…

The intergalactic team of Ratchet and Clank make their triumphant return to PlayStation 3 after the spectacular double dose of adventure that was Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty. Although in A Crack in Time, they seem to be one short of a duo...

It takes two

The events of Quest for Booty have left Ratchet without his little mechanical buddy - kidnapped by his old enemy, Dr Nefarious. The quest to find Clank hasn't quite left the Lombax mechanic all alone, though. He's joined by another Lombax, the mysterious General Azimuth, who has ties to their past - and possibly holds the key to their future.

Which is handy, as one of the big themes of A Crack in Time is... time. This is one adventure which spans the fifth dimension, as well as the sixth, meaning plenty of wild fun that will throw you into exciting and varied scenarios, literally time and time again.

Developer Insomniac Games is keeping its cards close to its chest regarding the time-based gameplay elements, with only a tempting teaser of sections where Clank (you didn't think he'd be missing for the whole show, did you?) has to solve puzzles with multiple versions of himself from the past - leading to some comical and head scratching scenarios.

Cracked it

Even with much of the temporal brain ticklers still under the covers, there's already plenty to get excited by in A Crack in Time thanks to a blinding blend of space combat, platform style exploration and good old fashioned weapons-based action.

A couple of the early stages have you and Azimuth running the rule through a chaotic invasion of the Vullard settlement, forcing you into action against the aggressive Agorians who are armed with some rather large and brutish means of persuasion...

One mission during the invasion has you tracking down and defeating Agorian Beast Riders in Krell Canyon with General Azimuth (who is swift and efficient in taking down his foes), before later trying your skills against flame spewing mechanical Hydra Tanks, all across a richly colourful and high quality cartoon style setting that looks like it could have come straight from a cinema screen, especially as the sights and sounds of spaceships and battles from the invasion explode around you.

Destruction has never been so varied

This is the perfect excuse to have Ratchet try out his usually impressive range of weaponry - and like the game itself they promise to be bigger, badder and better than ever before. While taking on Beast Riders and Hydra Tanks, there's a destructive selection at your disposal, with high speed ricocheting Buzz Blades, explosive rockets from the Negotiator, the frog belching Sonic Eruptor and the enemy freezing CryoMine Glove among the assortment.

Ratchet also boasts his handy Omniwrench for smashing enemies as well as other less aggressive yet just as useful handiwork, his agility enhancing Swingshot, and the speedy new Hoverboots to help perform tricks off ramps and speed around levels with extra manoeuvrability - especially handy when confronting an angry weapon wielding Agorian.

With lots more to discover in the time-jumping Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, as well as an emotional story which promises to tug at the heartstrings, make sure you don't miss a moment by coming back to eu.playstation.com as the seconds tick towards its release...

Entertainment for all at gamescom

At gamescom in Cologne, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe unveiled a slimmer, lighter PlayStation 3, new PlayStation Network services, plenty of content and a great value price.

On August 18, 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced a range of new products and services that will transform the entertainment experience on PSP, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network. Against the backdrop of strong global sales and the announcement of a comprehensive range of new games and entertainment services, the new PlayStation 3 was unveiled, offering 120 gigabytes of hard disk drive storage space and priced at €299.

New PS3 system
The final surprise of the press conference was the unveiling of the new PS3 system. Responding to consumer demand for more space and the move towards downloadable content and games, the new model features 120GB hard disk drive whilst being 32% smaller in size and 36% lighter, with 34% less power consumption. Available in stores the week of September 1, 2009, the new PS3 will be priced at €299. The current PS3 will also be reduced to €299 from August 19, 2009.

Entertainment on demand
System software update version 3.00 will improve the aesthetics and navigation of PS3, whilst also giving access to optimised TV websites including the UK’s BBC iPlayer from September 1, 2009, followed shortly by RTVE, ANTENA 3 and La Sexta in Spain, ZDFmediathek in Germany, NOS in the Netherlands NOS, and the Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) in Australia.

Other new features introduced as part of this system software update include dynamic wallpapers, improved navigation, a short cut to PlayStation Store from Game on the XMB (XrossMediaBar), and a What’s New area which includes short cuts to last three games played and quick browsing of new content on PlayStation Store.

Alongside TV web access, the PlayStation entertainment offering was strengthened with the announcement of the PlayStation Network Video Store for PS3 and PSP, which goes live in November. The service will offer hundreds of movies, from Hollywood blockbusters to local market content, for rental or purchase in standard or High Definition formats. Available at launch in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain, the service will be rolled out to more countries throughout 2010.

Digital Reader unveiled
The Digital Reader service for PSP will also become available in December with other markets to follow in 2010. The first offering is Digital Comics, with hundreds of comics available at launch, and many more added each month, with big names including Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four from Marvel, standing alongside graphic novels and titles from indie and local publishers. Consumers will first need to connect their PSP via Wireless to PlayStation Store to download the Digital Reader. Once downloaded, they can return to the Store to choose from a wide variety of comics available.

New payment system
Access to PlayStation Network content and services, including videos and comics will be made even easier from September with the availability in stores of PlayStation Network Cards in €20 and €50 denominations, allowing consumers to purchase from the PlayStation Store without the need for a credit card.

Andrew House, SCEE President and CEO, summarised the impact of the new services: “PlayStation Network opens up a genuinely unique entertainment experience. This is no longer just for hardcore gamers, but for everyone. We believe that everyone enjoys entertainment differently and should have the choice as to what entertainment they consume and exactly how they consume it. PlayStation is the gateway to that entertainment.”

Launch of minis
PSP saw more content, more choice and more ways to play. The gaming experience on PSP will be enhanced by minis, a new category of bite-sized games on PlayStation Network. Fifteen minis titles will be available on October 1, 2009, alongside the launch of PSPgo, with more than 35 developers around the world delivering more than 50 games by the end of the year. Meanwhile, choice was brought to life with two new colours for PSP-3000; Turquoise Green and Blossom Pink on sale from November, either as a stand alone product or, in the case of Turquoise Green, bundled with LittleBigPlanet.

Other bundles include Sony Computer Entertainment titles Gran Turismo, InviZimals and MotorStorm Arctic Edge, as well as titles from other publishers including Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines, DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY, FIFA 10, Hannah Montana and TEKKEN 6.

Heavy Rain
David Cage of Quantic Dream presented a dramatic update to the much anticipated PS3 title. The game catapults players on an emotionally driven, dramatic journey in which their every move can have a tangible impact on the way the narrative unfolds, providing players with an intense, immersive and original experience.

PlayStation Home
The version 1.3 upgrade was announced for PlayStation Home, which has now seen 3.3 million downloads across PAL territories. The upgrade includes the ability to preview items before you buy, the ability to carry portable objects like a camera or a remote control hovercraft and to game launch into any title. A new community space for SingStar was shown, as well as an exciting space in collaboration with German car manufacturer Audi.

MAG developer interview

Enter the battlefield with Ed Byrne, the Creative Director of Zipper Interactive's massive action game, MAG.

Can you briefly describe what MAG is?

MAG is the world's first first-person shooter to handle up to 256 players on the same map. It's going to provide a dynamic battlefield experience the likes of which players have never seen before on a console system.

Why did you decide to make a game with 256 players?

Well, it's a challenge - something that nobody has done before - and Zipper Interactive has a pedigree of tackling technical challenges. We thought that 256 would almost leap a generation; it's so much higher than what's currently out there and we want the game to stand out by creating an experience that very few studios would even consider at this point.

How will you ensure it isn't chaotic with that many players?

We've done a lot of tests inside our own studio, observing how people were playing the game, and we came up with a set of plans to limit the chaos. We found that real-life military structure, with squads and platoons, seems to work best. These real-life structures help the players feel that the game is organised.

How do you develop your soldiers to earn new skills and weapons?

You earn experience points for everything you do in MAG, whether that's killing enemies or completing objectives, and you'll get additional points if that objective was set by your Squad Leader. Those points can be used after each match to upgrade your character. You can learn new skills, enhance proficiency with different weapons and buy attachments for all of those weapons.

Rather than have a rigid class structure, we wanted more freedom. So if a player wants heavy armour and a machine gun, but also wants to be able to use a sniper rifle and heal a person on the battlefield, that's perfectly feasible.

What is the chain of command on the battlefield and how do you control your soldiers?

The chain of command isn't about control; it's about providing an incentive for players to work together. Everyone comes in as Foot Soldier and as you gain experience, you earn the right to be a Squad Leader in charge of the seven other guys in your squad. Then, you can be a Platoon Leader, gaining charge of four squads, followed by Officer in Charge, who commands four entire platoons - 128 players.

Rather than have Squad Leaders tell their squads exactly what to do, we've given them tools to provide incentives for completing key objectives. So for example, a Squad Leader might look at the battlefield and want their squad to attack a particular target; that leader's squad members will each receive bonus experience points for kills in the vicinity of that target and for destroying the target itself. Also, soldiers will receive an additional bonus for sticking close to their Squad Leader. There are many incentives for squads to follow orders, and incentives for Squad Leaders to issue them, but there's no such thing as forcing anyone to do anything.

We're fully aware that some players just want to be great soldiers, with no leadership aspirations, so only those that put themselves forward will be chosen to lead the squad.

Are you penalised for being a bad leader?

We're aware that not all Squad Leaders will be brilliant and some will not want to lead as much as others, so there's always a default objective set by the game. A Squad Leader can rely on this if he or she wants to spend more of their time fighting, and simply sticking close to that person is of benefit to all squad members.

How does the re-spawn process work in MAG?

We have a short re-spawn timer, so when you're shot there is a window in which medics can revive you and get you back on the battlefield. Failing that, you'll see a countdown timer, at the end of which you and any other squad member that have died recently will come back together.

For bigger matches, the spawn mechanics are based on vehicles. Some squads will re-spawn in APCs, which are mobile, armoured spawn points that can be deployed tactically and driven right up to the front line. Later on in these large games, squads can parachute in from helicopters carrying on-board mini-guns. Our spawning mechanics are far more exciting than simply reappearing somewhere on the map.

Will players be able to form a squad with real life friends?

Absolutely - once you're in the game you're able to send out invites, via PlayStation Network, or you can be invited by your friends. We want to make sure that friends are in the same squad, so even if you have seven other friends online, you can all be together.

Can players play alone?

We've got settings for everyone, so whether you want to go and shoot for ten minutes or get into a really long, strategic match, it's all there for you. We also support clans, so if you're really getting into MAG, you can join a clan and make new friends online.

What tips do you have for novices?

The best way to approach MAG is as you would any shooting game - you need good aim and quick reactions. I find the best way to start out is to choose the assault rifle, pick up a couple of grenades and keep your distance, as there a lot of good players out there who will take you out very quickly. As you develop your skills, you'll be better equipped for close-up combat and some of the more advanced weapons, like the high-powered sniper rifle.

Small but mighty - minis for PSP

New downloadable games are coming to you on PSP which are small and pack a punch - get a look at the mighty minis range.

PSP owners are about to get a major mini boost with the arrival of minis - a new section for PlayStation Store that offers a range of all-new downloadable titles for PSP.

Coinciding with the launch of PSPgo and available exclusively on PlayStation Store from October 1, 2009, minis will boast a 100MB size limit to make sure they're quick and easy to download for your PSP, offering more choice, more ways to play and more innovative experiences to immerse yourself in wherever you are.

Fifteen games will be available initially, across a wide variety of genres including arcade-style games, racers and parlour games - among others - with more than 50 games on offer by the end of the year. The minis development process has been designed to open the door to a broad range of developers to encourage new talent and creative ideas to PSP, with titles developed by some of the most creative studios from across the globe, including GameShasta, a medium-sized development team based in India, and HoneySlug, a three-man team in Camden, London.

The minis initiative is also supported by traditional game publishers, with industry leader Electronic Arts, developing a number of games for the programme including Tetris and Sudoku, with other titles to follow before the end of the year.

"We are very excited to offer so much new content for PSP this year, particularly in this bite-sized form," says Zeno Colaco, Vice President, Publisher and Developer Relations, SCEE. "In opening the door to developers everywhere, we are broadening the type of content available to PSP owners, and opening up a world of possibilities to enhance the PSP gaming experience."

"minis is yet another part of our concerted effort to expand content options on PlayStation Store as the demand for digital content will increase with the launch of PSPgo," says Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network and Strategic Planning, SCEA. "minis will give developers the opportunity to create and share a variety of new and original content that in some cases, are only available on PSP."

Entertainment on PS3 has a new look

Enjoy a new slimmer and lighter PlayStation 3, due to hit stores in September 2009 with a lower price and extensive software line-up in time for the holiday season.

At gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. unveiled the new PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, featuring a streamlined form factor with a 120GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The new PS3 will be available in stores from September 1, 2009, in the UK at a very attractive recommended retail price (RRP) of 249.99.

With the introduction of the new PS3 system, SCEI will also reduce the price of the current PS3 with 80GB HDD to a RRP of249.99from August 19. By launching a vast library of exciting and attractive software titles for PS3 this holiday season and offering customers a line-up of hardware models and pricing to match their preference, SCEI will build on the momentum and further accelerate the expansion of the PS3 platform.

The internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit, to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned, achieving a much slimmer and lighter body. Compared to the very first PS3 model with 60GB HDD, the internal volume as well as its thickness and weight are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds. Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise.

While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with textured surface finish, giving an all new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.

Concurrently with the release of the new PS3 system, SCEI will modify the PS3 brand name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3, and introduce a new logo, which is engraved on the surface of the new PS3 system. By unifying under the familiar PlayStation name, which represents the entire PlayStation family, PS3 together with PlayStation 2 and PSP will further expand the PlayStation business, and will continue to enhance the entertainment experience along with the ever-growing PlayStation Network.

The new PS3 continues to offer the cutting-edge features and functions of the current models, such as the ability to enjoy High Definition Blu-ray Disc (BD) movies and games, as well as various content and services downloadable through the network.

The new PS3 system’s storage size has increased from 80GB to 120GB, and with the extra capacity users will be able to store more games, music, photos, videos as well as various content and services available through PlayStation Network. Having more than 27 million registered accounts around the world, as of the end of July 2009 PlayStation Network offers more than 15,000 pieces of digital content, ranging from game titles, trailers, and demos to more than 15,000 movies and TV shows via PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Network members can also download free applications, such as PlayStation Home, a ground-breaking 3D social gaming community available on PS3 that allows users to interact, communicate and share gaming experiences, as well as Life with PlayStation, which offers users various news and information on a TV monitor in the living room by connecting the PS3 to the network.

Since the launch of PS3 in November 2006, the number of disc titles has reached more than 1,000, and downloadable PS3 games to 1,400 titles worldwide, with the support from a broad range of third party game developers and publishers. In addition to this extensive software title line-up, exciting and attractive new titles are to be released from SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, EyePet, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, MAG, ModNation Racers, Gran Turismo 5 and more.

Other features of the new PS3 include:
PS3 system software update version 3.00
Concurrently with the release of new PS3, system software will be upgraded to version 3.00 on September 1, 2009. The update adds various user-friendly features such as the What’s New screen, where users can quickly browse the new items available in PlayStation Store as well as their recently played games directly on the XMB (XrossMediaBar), with short cuts to each piece of content.

PS3 will evolve continuously with the system software updates, further improving the operability and enhancing the user experience available through the network. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy new features by simply updating the PS3 system software to version 3.00 via the System Update function on the XMB*.

Bravia Sync™ Feature
The new PS3 system is also equipped with the Bravia Sync™ feature. By connecting the new PS3 system and a Bravia TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote control. Other functions include System Standby that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the Bravia TV is turned off.

Vertical Stand for new PS3 (CECH-2000)
By utilising the separately sold Vertical Stand, users will be able to set the new PS3 in vertical position, making it easier to place the PS3 system anywhere at home.

Removal of Install Other OS feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.

Gran Turismo PSP first impressions

Peek under the bonnet of the latest real driving simulator from Polyphony Digital.

Gran Turismo, the real driving simulator, has appeared on every PlayStation system and the latest iteration is the first game in the series on PSP.

The presentation has been streamlined to fit the portable system's screen. Menus are clean and simple, and you're never more than a few clicks away from the next race. On the track, this is a full Gran Turismo experience, which means incredibly realistic handling and a connoisseur's collection of exotic cars.

There are more than 800 vehicles to race on 35 tracks, with over 70 variations. All tracks are available from the outset and winning races on them earns credits that can be spent on cars. Of course, you'll need a set of wheels to do that, so you start off with a Peugeot 206; in between each race a different set of car manufacturers will open its doors for you to add to your garage.

Behind the wheel, Gran Turismo fans will feel immediately at home. Detail is everywhere, from the modelling of the cars to how they lean into corners, and all tracks - some real, some GT stalwarts such as High Speed Ring - are lovingly recreated.

The three race types available are single race, which pits you against three computer-controlled teams on the course of your choice, Time Trial and Drift, which places markers at corners and awards points for the longest powerslides. There are also several gorgeous rally courses, such as Chamonix and Grand Canyon, and a stable of specialist vehicles to drive on them.

Mission mode resembles the license modes from previous titles, providing groups of challenges of increasing difficulty, and ranging from simple starting and stopping to advanced techniques such as drifting. It's a great way to learn the fundamentals of race driving, and the later challenges provide enough complexity for even the elite players.

Up to four players can link up and race via Ad Hoc Mode and you can even trade cars with each other.

Gran Turismo for PSP is a full-scale GT experience, with no corners cut or compromises made. Just the sheer number of cars available makes for a lifetime of racing, and whenever a collection is chosen by Kazunori Yamauichi, you know it's that of a true car fanatic.

MotorStorm Arctic Edge racetracks revealed

Take a look at the 12 breakneck tracks you’ll be racing in MotorStorm Arctic Edge on PSP.

Are you ready for seriously icy, inhospitable, and dangerously unpredictable racing conditions as you hurtle across 12 ruthless, thrilling and desolate new tracks in the breathtaking and volatile setting of Alaska - right at the edge of the Arctic Circle?

Each of these 12 brutal tracks are playable both forward and in reverse, with the alternate versions opening up their very own challenges with different weather conditions and brand new routes, effectively giving you 24 tracks to race around. Check them out:

Gold Rush
Get ready for a blistering circuit through the scarred rocks of an abandoned mine, with racers blasting through gravel, mud and streams of meltwater in the hunt for treasured first place.

Log Jam
No longer the lush green paradise it used to be, 20th century deforestation has left Log Jam a timber strewn quagmire making it absolutely perfect terrain for the modern off road racer with a death wish.

Mudbowl
It's wide, fast and dirty (guess that's why they call it the Mudbowl) as participants slip and slide their way through Mudbowl, dodging rocks and gaping oil pipes in the hunt for the fastest lap.

Widow Maker

Following the path of a long dried up river, the eerie Widow Maker brings out the festival's darker side, with its towering iron sculptures and the infamous hilltop jump of faith. Do you trust yourself to make the leap?

Eagle Falls
The ice curtain of Eagle Falls forms a stark and chilling backdrop to the countless treacherous paths you'll face as you blast through this multilayered cliff top track.

Wolfpack Mountain
The festival crowds go wild for the racing variety on Wolfpack Mountain, with its biting lap times and multiple routes guaranteed to bring out the beast in every MotorStorm racer.

Ascension
In Ascension, you'll face a terrifying snaking climb up through a rocky mountain pass until gravity finally takes a grip and racers barrel down the slopes straight to the finish line - hopefully in one piece.

Auguta Glacier
This mighty creation of nature is powerful enough to cut though the solid rocks, which means Anguta Glacier's canyon of ancient blue ice is the perfect setting for a cold hearted race to destruction.

The Chasm
Infamous for its perilous jumps and gaping drops, The Chasm is a nefarious high speed trek across a splintered mountain plateau. Think you can handle it?

Northern Face
The claustrophobic caves of Northern Face echo with the sound of roaring engines as racers burst right out into the harsh cold light amongst massive snowbound cliffs just waiting to push racers right over the edge.

Snowgod Canyon
A kingdom of snow and ice hidden among the peaks, Snowgod Canyon's beauty hides treacherous deep snow and thunderous avalanches waiting to claim unwary racers.

Vertigo
Clinging to the steep slopes at the very top of the mountain is Vertigo. Windswept bridges of glass and steel are all that stand between festival goers and a deadly mile-high drop.
