FirstPlay: See the future of PS3. First. Episode 31

Def Jam Rapstar, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Bioshock Infinite, DJ Hero 2, DeathSpank: Thongs Of Virtue, Vanquish, Front: Mission Evolved, Tumble,

This week on FirstPlay we've got a positively thumping HD review of new SingStar rival Def Jam Rapstar (which, despite our best efforts, they decided not to call BlingStar). We've also got a preview of sleek smash 'em Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, and we zoom in for an extra close-up look at what we can expect from Bioshock Infinite when it's finally released in 2012.

And there's loads more! We've also got tips from the DJ Hero 2 team on how to spin your opponents into the ground in the game's competitive mode, a personal take from editor-in-chief Tim Clark on his addiction to PES 2011's Become A Legend mode, plus reviews of DeathSpank: Thongs Of Virtue, Vanquish, Front: Mission Evolved and Tumble.

Last but not least we have our screenshot galleries, which is where we tend to put our weirdest jokes and where this week you'll find Twisted Metal, Alice: Madness Returns, El Shaddai: Ascension Of The Metatron and Mindjack.

All of this can be yours for just 99p, or even less if you buy an 8.99 subscription to FirstPlay for 12 weeks.

We’d also like to remind you that you can stay in touch with all things FirstPlay by following us on Twitter at @firstplay_uk and on our Facebook page: FirstPlay (official). Game Talk: The Last Guardian

Discover the magical world of The Last Guardian with Team Ico’s Fumito Ueda.

Following on from the release of a brand new trailer at Tokyo Games Show in September 2010, the revered game director talks to eu.playstation.com about the hotly anticipated The Last Guardian coming exclusively to PlayStation 3.

Are you glad that you're now finally able to pull back the curtain a little bit more on what you and your team have been working on?
I am glad. But more than that, I regret that I kept everybody waiting.

How do you feel about the positive response to what you’ve shown of the game so far?
I'm relieved. At the same time, I feel a certain pressure and I will do my best not to disappoint everybody.

What do you want the audience to feel when watching trailers of The Last Guardian?
I want the audience to feel that the process leading up to the end of the game is fun and, of course, I want them to feel that this is a game that they must have

Can you talk us through the creative process and inspiration for The Last Guardian?
First of all, with respect to the gameplay, we slowed down the pace to focus our efforts on narrative production and the polishing of each level.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were well received by many gamers. However, we felt that there were people out there who the games didn't reach, the kind of people who wouldn’t usually play games, and so, to appeal to these people, we set our theme on animals and their habitats.

Were there any particular films, comics or other mediums which influenced the tone and style of The Last Guardian?
Anything that depicted non-verbal communication with strange creatures such as Where the Wild Things Are, My Neighbor Totoro and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

What can you tell us about how the boy and the creature work together throughout the game to accomplish objectives and reach their goal?
The boy must guide the creature, never being entirely sure whether his intentions are understood, and bearing in mind its surroundings and personality. Under the boy's guidance, the creature will display extraordinary abilities.

Have you done any tests with, or considered, stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move for The Last Guardian?
We would like to take that into consideration.

How will The Last Guardian appeal to gamers who already know ICO and Shadow of the Colossus from PlayStation 2 as well as newcomers?
We are always directing our game to new users. That is why we don't use numbers in our titles.

We hope that by doing so, our game will be equally refreshing and surprising to new players as well as the fans who have played our games.

As games become more adept at invoking emotional responses from gamers, what techniques have you employed in The Last Guardian to take players on an incredible journey?
As in the games we have created up until now, all expressions must be believable. We must maintain the connection between the controller and the in-game character as much as possible.

It's important that the presence of the game designer is not felt and that the game makes you feel like you’re at the heart of a true drama with no pre-determined plot.

What are the main emotions you want people to feel when they play the game?
Like the games we've created so far, our wish throughout the production is to hopefully create an illusion so real that players will feel that this fictional world could really exist somewhere.

In addition, I'm hoping that the time people spend playing the game provides significant returns in terms of emotional impact.

Keep an eye on eu.playstation.com and PlayStation Blog at blog.eu.playstation.com for more news on The Last Guardian as it becomes available.

Play Like A Pro: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 developer Yukes teaches you how to become king of the ring on PlayStation 3 using a variety of WWE wrestling superstars.

1. Big Show
The largest athlete in sports entertainment is one of the most difficult WWE Superstars to deal with in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011. His power and size often overwhelm opponents, and this year's game will not stray from that perception. With a 100 Grapple rating, Big Show can wear down his opponent quickly. When playing as him keep your opponent in the corner and on the ground as much as you can or you may have trouble pulling off those grapple manoeuvres.

2. Bret Hart
The Excellence of Execution did not get his nickname without being one of the most technical competitors of his time in the WWE. Bret Hart is the epitome of the term, "submission specialist" for his technical ability to focus on the legs and back of his opponent so that he can land his patented Sharpshooter submission hold.

3. CM Punk
CM Punk believes he is better than every other wrestler out there, and in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011, his 93 Overall rating makes him better than almost everyone in the game. CM Punk is an extremely well rounded competitor and can perform everything with panache. His 90 Strike rating makes him one of the more punishing strikers in the game, so when you mix in a taunt here and there, opponents will be sleeping before they even step foot on the canvas.

4. Edge
The Rated R Superstar and nine-time champion has the intangibles (90 Charisma, 85 Speed and 85 Technical ratings) that make him a very unpredictable WWE Superstar in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011. Although his grapple, strike and submission ratings are 80, the best way to use Edge is to think outside the box.

Distract the referee, take the match outside the ring and spend time stalling in order to frustrate your opponent, which is what Edge does best. His deadly Spear finisher can be triggered from almost anywhere and is also one of the fastest finishing moves in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011.

5. John Cena
No one WWE Superstar evokes the emotion of the WWE Universe more than John Cena. Rated at 95 Overall, you really can't go wrong with the West Newbury, Massachusetts native when it comes to the squared circle. His 90 Durability rating means Cena can take a beating and still manage to come back with the heart and intensity that has made him the number one WWE Superstar in the business right now.

Cena is not known to focus on any one part of the body during a match in preparation for a submission finisher. Strike (85 rating), and Grapple (90 rating) are Cena's bread and butter. Use these combinations in variation for the perfect lead-in to Cena's Attitude Adjustment finisher.

6. Kelly Kelly
She's so nice, they named her twice. Kelly Kelly debuted in ECW but has honed her craft as a competitor in the past few years to become one of the WWE's top Divas. Taunt often, because Kelly Kelly's 95 Charisma rating will ensure a quickly filled meter to perform her awesome K2 finisher.

7. Sheamus
Since his debut in WWE, Sheamus has won the WWE Championship twice and has already established himself as a force to be reckoned with. As the only Irish born WWE Champion, you can certainly tell where he gets his 90 rated Strike from. Sheamus is not a submission specialist, so avoid using them if at all possible. Use a variation of running strikes and grapples for maximum effect and finish your opponent off with Sheamus' Brogue Kick. It is the perfect move that you can trigger during almost any situation.

8. The Miz
No one can match The Miz when it comes to Charisma (90 rating). Taunt often to get The Miz's meter up, and you'll not only spite your opponent in Miz-like fashion, but when you're performing your Skull Crushing Finale finisher on your opponent, they'll be left wondering what just happened.

9. Triple H
Triple H is not only a future WWE Hall of Famer, he is the most well rounded WWE Superstar in the game and can be effective as a submission specialist, striker and grappler, or even as a ring psychologist. Make sure you taunt often so that Triple H can perform his infamous Pedigree finisher on an opponent sooner rather than later.

10. Undertaker
The highest rated WWE Superstar in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011. Are you surprised? Forget his unforgettable WrestleMania streak, without it Undertaker would still be a WWE Hall of Famer and could match any other WWE Legend. In his early days, Undertaker was known as a striker and a grappler with deceptive quickness and speed for such a big man. Great competitors always improve as their career expands, and Undertaker did just that by perfecting his devastating submission finisher, Hell's Gate. This is the Undertaker - use him and do whatever you want!

Demo Guide - Time Crisis: Razing Storm

Master your PlayStation Move motion controller skills in this guide to the Time Crisis: Razing Storm demo, available to download for free from PlayStation Store.

Namco Bandai has unveiled a demo on PlayStation Store of its hugely anticipated, latest instalment in the action-packed PlayStation 3 shoot-‘em up series. Check out this guide to perfecting the Time Crisis: Razing Storm demo.

Arcade action

The gives you immediate access to Arcade Mode, which is full of relentless action, bullets and swarms of enemies to engage. You can play it either on your own or with a friend if you have two PlayStation Move motion controllers or are using Wireless Controllers. The remaining modes, Story, Online Battle and Sentry are all available in the full game available to buy from stores in November 2010.

Calibrate and get ready

First things first - you're going to need to calibrate your PlayStation Move motion controller if you're going to survive this adrenaline-fuelled demo for Time Crisis: Razing Storm on PlayStation 3. It's simple to do, so just select Crosshair Settings from the main menu and follow the on-screen prompts to configure your PlayStation Move motion controller. Ready? Time to lock ‘n' load!

Click, click, boom!

The demo kicks off with an action-packed cutscene as you and your team of soldiers race through a small town that's being overrun with giant robots and armed opponents. Grab your PlayStation Move motion controller and stop them before they take you down. The first shoot-out takes place at a fruit stand and enemies that are about to shoot at you are highlight by a red cross hairs, so point your motion controller at them and pull the trigger before the timer bar runs out and they shoot you first. Keep an eye out for explosive red barrels too; they're perfect for taking out groups of enemies all at once.

Watch out for civilians

At one point early in the demo you'll have to be careful where you place your shots because a number of civilians will scramble into the midst of the shoot-out. They are highlighted in a yellow box so be sure not to fire at them or you'll be penalised for it.

Grenade!

Enemies will throw grenades at you too. Be sure to shoot them out of the air so they explode before they reach you. They're ferociously lethal and deplete large amounts of your health extremely quickly.

Robot Raptors

The final section of the Time Crisis: Razing Storm demo are the Raptors, mechanical beasts capable of launching rocket attacks and ramming you. Thankfully you're equipped with the Cluster gun, which fires multiple shots all at once and can block the Raptor's ram attack by holding down the X button to raise your shield. Use it to shoot down the Raptor's rockets before they hit you, and then take them out of the game before they run rampage on your PlayStation 3.

Visit PlayStation Store now and download the demo for free.
